His tone and playing were a lot looser here then say any of the Sammy years. If you watch LWOAN his tone sounds very processed and clean (even though its overdriven). It sounds loose and raw here, up until the 1984 tour his tone still had this feel. When Dave left its like he changed his whole approach to a cleaner sound.
idk y but after 1984, dave kinda stopped singing and starting yelling the words out . it can get annoying. idk if hes trying to get breath or hatever but i just want the 77- 84 back.
I got to see Van Halen in Van Nuys, Ca. The Rock Corporation was the bar. 1975. This was before their first album. The other band that night was Rockets. They were awesome also. Time flies.
Ed got the idea from Jeff Beck, who revealed in an mid-70's magazine interview how he could keep his guitar in tune by using lots of oil on the nut and opening up the slots. Jeff Beck was doing heavy bar-bombs and shaking the shit outta his vibrato long before Eddie's first record.
Ed mentions many times what a big fan he was of Beck, so he must have either read it or figured it out himself.
I can't imagine the money Ed coulda made if he would've put a patent on humbucker-Strat designs.
i don't think he would get a patent for that too general an idea there are too many guitar designs w/ diff body shapes & all kinds of pick-up shape combos..think about it..
He filed out the string grooves on the nut by the head stock.Kept the strings from binding.Made them slide real ez when he used the whammy, hence stayin in tune for the most part.He also said he had to watch how hard he hit the strings cuz they would pop out the grooves if he hit them to hard.
@lkb3rd Even past his prime he's the greatest front man ever. All hail the Mighty Van Halen! And just like when they arrived on the scene back in the day, the Rock industry is again in need of a shot in the arm. I'm sick of all the guitar solos today sounding the same. No real soloing, just bar cords and 16th notes. Ed's gonna bash some brains in! See you at Tour 2012!!
When I went 2 see Sabbath/Van Halen at madison square garden in 78 it was obviouse that Sabbaths reaign as biggest and best band in the world was over and that the band opening them would be taking there place Van Halen young flash and enthusastic now I saw Sabbath before in 72, 74, 75 and 76 and were great every time but in 78 just it was the end is neigh sort of thing they came on stage and just nothing no enthusiasm theband were sluggish and Ozzy just blaitently didn't want to do that anymore
does anyone know how he makes that sound during the intro??? i know that he uses a flanger, but then he steps on something to make this other weird sound
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
actually this song was recorded in half-step and it definitely sounds different so maybe its a whole step down to D. They probably did it cuz Roth's a shitty singer so it makes it easier to sing
oh he is a shitty singer but I totally agree with you....I fuckin HATE Sammy Hagar. lol Dave helped create the image of the band in my opinion....but that still doesn't mean he is a good singer
Well, depends how you measure, I guess. For VH-style music, Roth's voice was fantastic. Unless you're talking about some of his "uber-drunk" (aka sloppy) live performances. But hey, that was rock n' roll in the 70's and 80's. lol.
If you meant he doesn't have the same technical talent as, say, Kelly Clarkson... you'd be right... but I'll be damned if I ever buy a Kelly Clarkson album. Hahah.
Slash is an OK guitarist. He's WAY over rated because of Guitar Hero 3. Everyone thinks their sooo cool cuz they like Slash, and they don't even know his real name. Van Halen rocks though.
Slash seems to take in more of his ego than his guitar playing. Still a very influential musician among younger kids who seem not to know anything else of the Golden Age of Rock (the 1970's).
he got the intro sound from rubbin the pad of his right hand against the strings. never heard of that before. goes to show his zappa inspired theory of "if itsounds good, it is good" is to his day tried and true.LLVH
the first three tour's clip's show so clearly that his "brown sound" was the sickest tone he ever had. He lost it with the floyd, going wireless in '81, and I heard he lost his main amp on a flight from europe, which could be bullshit. Everything about his early tone was expressive, you could hear his fingers on the neck, the pick, highs and lows seperated. And his effects now dont sound this clear and direct. He has to get this tone again, less fuzzy wa wa
back in ed's early days, he would experiment with placing the effects after his marshall head into the speakers.
This way, his whole sound would run through the effects into the speakers.Try it.
Unlike plugging your guitar into an effect and then into the front of the amp.
He was a pure genius.
I still marvel at his accomplishments on a daily basis--- no one has ever done what he's done---to this day and more to come people will discover how special this man was as a guitarist/musician.
So you are saying put your effects between the speaker output on your amp and the input on your cabinet? Will that setup hurt the amp or speakers at all?
If you google Eddie Van Halen's Brown Sound, there are several links to show how he set his rig in the early days.
The effects were after the head and before the speaker cab. but he also used a power amp and a dummy load. Check out some of the links it's great reading..
I wish he would go back to his original setup just for the fun of it but he probably won't. we are all tone chasers including him
did not know this existed! dang...cool....
Anyone know the story of the taping? How the guy got the cam in, VIP booth? etc etc
thanks

Two things about EVH during this time:
1. His 'effin guitar nevers goes out of tune (this is pre Floyd).
2. His Phase 90 and flanger sound so different from any other guitar player.
Pure genius.
