This song is so alien in many ways, and it is to me very science fiction like it reminds of Dr Who, Blake's 7, Star Maidens, Star Wars, Fireball Xl5 and Battle StarGalactica in many ways.It is also a song that causes me to see clips of my past life, in my childhood.
This weird song reminds of science fiction series such as Dr Who, Blake's 7, Star Maidens, Star Wars, Fireballxl5 and also Battle StarGalactica. The lyrics in this song are not at all, easy to understand or even define the meaning of them. The lyrics sound so gibberish and utterly, alien in billions of ways still never mind we can't know everything nobody can it is impossible to know everything.
A different drummer from the studio version of this song too - the bloke playing drums on the studio version of this was somewhat busy in 1981, releasing two albums (one solo, one with his band) and having a major hit single on his hands.
they're singing in a fantasy language oldfield developed for the song, inspired by the noises babies make before they actually learn to speak. read that somewhere on an oldfield fanpage.
@anotherjoe50 This song to me is like science fiction music, it could fit on Blake's Seven, Dr Who, Star Maidens, Star Wars or even on Battle Star Galactica in billions of ways.
@Biochips1 As I understand it, it wasn't a firing. She was going to start a family and a solo career. At the same time, Mike was having a rather rough split from Virgin Records, and felt that he needed to go back to the '79 way of doing things (hence Amarok).
Don't know how many times I've watched this video, but it gives me the bumps every time.
Some of my colleagues at work were laughing at me, because I'm listening to Mike Oldfield, but I guess People like them will never understand the beauty that lies in this music.
My first idols were Sweet but very early on (1978?), I discovered Mike Oldfield who was my greates hero along with Rush. Not hard to remember why I liked him so much when I listen to this, Tubular, Taurus, Five miles out and many more. Would loooove to see him again. ///Håkan
Its a little bit sad and I like it and I could make this song with Dakota and Elle Fanning and the Gril Scouts Of San Fernando Valley and the vid is a little bit various and I make it in a church.
Love this song. Greatest musician of all time.

If you play the song backwards, they keep saying "Paul is dead."
anotherjoe50 2 years ago
@anotherjoe50 you are either being facetious, or you are confusing Mike Oldfield with the Beatles

Maggie Reilly is the best voice for Oldfield's themes and I think she sings "Man in the rain" in the original CD version
llu57702 3 years ago
No, Maggie Reilly doesn't song Man in the Rain. It's another singer. By that time Mike has already fired Maggie!

when the picture fades from drums to maggie reilly it at 01:37ish it looks like she's wearing huge comedy glasses!

its awkward and flimsy-feeling seeing the keyboardist without his scandalous and perhaps indelicate piano-shirt (see montreux)

The making of music that is unusually sensual for Mike oldfield.I do not say too much even if I say that the new movement began at here!.

Thanks a lot for posting this video. Mike's music is the soundtrack of my teen years, and this glimpse of his concert has really touched me.

Thanks for uploading.

Mike Frye wasn't the best drummer for MO. He was a good percussionist though.
