I personally use cloth for the friction. It helps keep the mouse steady with all sorts of movements. If I quickly move the mouse to aim at something I can stop where I want to better then having the mouse slide around on a slicker surface. To each his own but I'd say you are very much in a rare category of non mousepad using gamers.
