First-turn strike moves are awesome. My Pikachu once defeated a +3 DD Gyarados by first using Fake Out and then Quick Attack. My opponent couldn't believe what had just happened.
Great match despite the loss. I think you nailed the opponent's strength's here; those first-strike moves helped a lot. Golduck was definitely the opponent's MVP in this match.

First strike moves can be very useful. I love my scizor with Techtician, and Bullet Punch STAB. It makes the 40power move all the way up to 90!

Mmm. First-strike moves can hurt a lot. I've won a few battles with Froslass pulling out Ice Shard.
If only it could learn Shadow Sneak. It'd hit OU in twenty minutes.

I'm assuming the Gyarados had already taken some damage prior to that, correct?

Yeah. It had like 1/3rd of its HP left.

@MarlinBeta It's not uncommon for it to do that much damage. My Delcatty once took out an Arceus with a Fake-out (was holding silk scarf though).

Yeah, they are very very useful, especially on slower pokemon.
