The Great Siege of Malta 1565 & GM. Jean Parisot De La Valette

Military training was immediately imposed on the Maltese population. Some old people and women were encouraged to go to Sicily to be safe. Measures were taken to ensure adequate supplies of corn from Sicily. The defence force consisted of some 9,000 men, which included some 600 Knights and 8,000 local military force.

In 1557 La Valette was elected for Grandmaster of the Order of St. John. His experience was going to prove useful to the Order and the Maltese during the Great Siege. La Vallette was the first one to start urging for preparation for the coming Siege. His intuition was proved correct!

La Vallette, who had become a Knight at eighteen years of age, was a courageous soldier. He could speak Italian, Spanish, Greek and Turkish. This was obviously too the Order's advantage. When La Vallette became the Admiral of the Order's fleet, he caught Kust Ali in 1554, and sent him to row in the galleys. La Vallette was a powerful leader in battle. In October 1564 rumours reached Malta from the Ottoman Empire of a planned attack on Malta. The French Grandmaster Jean Parisot De La Vallette recalled to the Convent (the headquarters of the Knights in "Birgu") all the Knights who were living abroad and appealed for help in the preparations for the coming siege.

For the attack on Malta of 1565, the Turkish Sultan Soleyman sent again his general Dragut. However, this time he was to be helped by two admirals: Admiral Piali Pasha was to be in charge of the fleet, while Admiral Mustapha Pasha was to be in command of the army. On the other hand, the Order of St. John was to be led by Grandmaster Jean Parisot De La Vallette, with the backing of the Pope and the Holy Roman Emperor.

Turkish Sultan, had let the Order leave peacefully from Rhodes; after the Knights settled in Malta in 1530, they still continued attacking Turkish ships around the Mediterranean. Therefore, Soleyman was getting very annoyed with the losses his empire was suffering. Moreover, he was also unhappy about the fact that when one of his best generals, Dragut, attacked the Maltese Islands in 1551, he did not succeed in invading Malta and defeating the Knights

One should note that there is large relation between the island of Malta and the island of Ios in Greece (also known as Little Malta). Relatives of La Valette sailing towards the holy lands found a shelter at the island of Ios due to its natural port protecting from all the winds. There are still inhabitants with a surname of Valetas (for those who are aware of Greek History, Spyridon Valetas, member of the so called "Friendly Company", helped much during and prior the Greek Revolution of 1821).

Just finished reading an a first hand accounting of the siege by FRancisco Balbi di Correggio. Makes incredible reading, and although all sorts of praises go to the Knights, he did acceed that many Maltese fought well, many thousands of Maltese died at the hands of the Muslims.

Not because its concerns my country's history but the great siege really fascinates me, the level of ferocity in the fighting by both sides was alarmingly high

@nachopulp Spanish? only 200 Spanish were in the siege if u are talking about the reliefe force that fought the last naxxar battle it didn't fight the battle by their own, cos the knights cavalry of Mdina outflanke the turks, 2ndly during that time the turks were already broken had embarked & only disembarked again when the reliefe force wasn't as big as they thought & 3rd Malta with its few 8000 dfenders withstood the whole siege. Praise goes to the Knights & the Maltese ppl not to the Spanish.

Do you really think that receving 4000 fresh troops and provisions after months of siege was not crucial? Alvaro de Bazan did it. It's a fact that the Spanish relief opened a second front against the Turks. The 6th of Sept of 1565, when the Turks began to reembark into the galleys to face the coming armada, was the moment that the besieged used to charge against the Turks. The Turk galleys that were able to face the coming armada suffred heavy losses at sea.

@nachopulp yes there were thousands of spanish troops in the islands as part of the garrison. the credit for the heroic defence and patriotic war goes to hospitallers, maltese, spanish, italian, and greek forces. however, the vast majority of the defenders were maltese troops. as to the final help in september, the ottoman army was already beaten they had no hope of penetrating the defences. they had made many assaults and got nothing expet dead men. they lost 8000 on st elmo only!!

@ivaflimkien My Mum is from Valetta. There was a uselessly bloody battle in Saint Paul's Bay right at the very end . I have Correggio's account ( although haven't read it). I've read Bradford's brilliant book though. Malta was saved by a bluff that 16,000 Europeans were coming to her aid. Malta succeeded where the Byzantines failed. The Moslems were truly worn out.

La vallette made the well fortified cities after the siege when suleiman threatened to besiege it himself. & check out history accounts of turkish numbers from ppl who were there fighting not some modern historian's ideas, Francesco Balbi di Coreccgio gave the most detailed accounts about the siege 38,000 turks came first & reinforced by another 10000 from algiers, tripoli & other muslim corsairs.

At 1st Mustafa got so pissed that swore to kill evry single one including the Maltese fighters once they won, weeks later, knowing its not that easy he changed his mind & demanded 'Honourable Surrender'. When Mustafa's slave told this to La valette, he replied "Tell ur master There is the only territory i will give him. There lies the land he may have for his own" & showed the slave a huge ditch full of twisted,rotting & roasted janissary bodies.
