i read something that amazed me. you know that his counting fixation is obviously a play off his name? well that might only be half the reason. a very obscure bit of vampire lore is that they had an instinct to count things, just like the count, and one way to destract them is by throwing sand or grains infrount of them, and they will try to count every single one. this may be a coincidence, but i dout it.
Grover's need to help despite being a hindrance, Count's arithnomania and former hypnotic skills, Cookie's addiction, Oscar's grouchiness due to living in a trash can, Ernie and Bert--two guys, who've been rumored constantly as being gay--living together in a run-down apartment complex, Big Bird's original stupidly that's been a thankful removal, and Elmo's clear demand to be the center of attention...each Street resident has a problem, but they're still enjoyable.
I thought Cookie Monster's favorite food was cookies (which is why he is called Cookie Monster) because here in this skit he says to The Count that he loves to eat apples making it sound like apples are his favorite food.
Yes, I have seen Cookie Monster eating both cookies and apples but, in one skit, with Cookie Monster and Ernie, Cookie Monster told Ernie that he doesn't eat apples, he says that he eats cookies. This was the skit where Ernie was counting four apples, and he was giving Cookie Monster permission to eat an apple, so Cookie Monster was deciding whether to eat an apple or not which is where he says that he eats cookies not apples. So, I'm not sure whether Cookie Monster really likes apples or not.
afriend: Cookie tends to "iffy" on other foods, because as much as he adores Cookies, he's been promoting healthy foods--like apples--ever since skits like this.
yup i heard the producers want to not tempt kids to eat cookies anymore cuz there's too many obese kids, so they started the whole "healthy" cookie monster, which kinda defeats the purpose of having a cookie monster..
That's true. I remember in one skit Cookie Monster was in where he was singing that only eating cookies is very wrong and that people should eat fruits and vegetables in order to grow healthy and strong. I think the name of that skit was called "Healthy Foods." Plus, he even had some healthy muppet foods singing with him like a pineapple, an apple, a loaf of bread, a pear, and a brocolli.
afriendofbean: Yeah. Like is promoted, everything in moderation, and all that. Yes, all of Sesame's residents may have a underlying problem underneath the prestine perfect surface, but they're still loveable, even despite changes that not everyone cares for.
Yes, I even remember one Sesame Street episode where Cookie Monster wanted cookies at Hooper's Store but, there weren't any. So a fairy granted Cookie Monster a wish that anything he touches turns into a cookie, and at first, Cookie Monster was having fun touching things to turn them into cookies and eat them, but when he wanted to eat a tuna fish sandwich and it turned into a cookie when he touched it, so he felt sad thinking he can't eat any other healthy foods again, only cookies forever.
@afriendofbean: Exactly. We've just proved that Cookie has always been the Health Adviser for the Street, never mind what food he eats. Of course, his morals may need questioning--given the inside jokes presented by Fran Brill between her Prairie Dawn & Frank Oz/Eric Jacobson as Cookie--but whatever, the Street gang is not meant to be the morality police. Those types of lessons should be a parent's job, which is why the disclaimers on the Old School DVDs upset me.
Of course, even though Cookie Monster still loves cookies, maybe they should rename him as "Health Food Monster" since he now mostly encourages the audience to eat lots of fruits and vegetables. Even Hoots The Owl taught Cookie Monster that a cookie is a sometimes food where fruit is an anytime food where in one skit, Cookie Monster was trying to decide whether he should eat fruits on a table or a cookie on the table where Hoots The Owl stopped him before he can eat the cookie and not fruits.
Yes. The reason I thought they coulud rename Cookie Monster from Cookie Monster to Health Food Monster is because, the directors and producers have renamed some of the muppets/monsters on Sesame Street. For example, the monster who plays as Ingrid was named Frieda on one skit then her name was Juliette and now Ingrid. If they did this for Cookie Monster, on Muppet Wiki it can say "was Cookie Monster but now Health Food Monster to encourage healthy foods to kids around the world."
@afriendofbean: Yes, but Ingrid was not a focal character. Even during the time of the "Around the Corner" segments in which Baby Natasha and her parents--Ingrid and Humphrey--were introduced, the parents weren't the star of the skits, Baby Natasha was. Plus, Cookie Monster has been around promoting healthy eating ever since the 70's and his name has remained, so why bother changing it after all these years when all that will do is get more people upset at the producers for changing things?
I agree. People will get sad. However, I have another idea if they were going to use a monster looking like Cookie Monster that can be called "Health Food Monster." The monster that looks like Cookie Monster is named Cookie Hood where the only difference is that Cookie Hood has a mustache but Cookie Monster doesn't. Maybe they can use Cookie Hood (he wasn't a main character where he just appeared in one episode) and call him the Health Food Monster while Cookie Monster keeps his name.
@afriendofbean: Or maybe, "Cookie Hood" could be a disguise for Cookie Monster, showing us that eating healthy is a good thing whilst protecting his cookie-loving image. XD

@afriendofbean: Yes and that skit was in the 80's and this skit here was in 1972, meaning that it all came BEFORE the obesity problem.
