  • The organ-solo sounds epic!!!!!!!!

  • "Awww burgers an' all(?)" @ 3:13..love this version, rip it up lads!

  • A very intersting version.

  • sometimes it sounded like from the Adam's Family

  • แม่ง rock

  • When Rock,,rocked!! Better than the crap today!

  • Gillan was either drunk or stoned outa his gord man. Buttons and everything?? LMAO I love DP, my favorite band ever, but this is one shitty rendition of HStar.

  • @MegaBob77777

Gillan wasn't stones or drunk. This video was recored before the song was released on Machine Head. It wasn't finished at this time, that's why he improvises the lyrics and why the solos are different.

  • Ritchie Blackmore apparently didn't like to be video taped. Maybe he thought either he would loose his soul or someone would rip off his chops (early Malmsteen). You can't find decent video of Blackmore. Alex Van Halen said the the same thing to Eddie. he wanted Eddie to play facing his amps so no one would rip him off. It happened anyway.

  • And just another example that it's not the singer that makes one band great. Gillan sang some shit-load of words here, but the song still sounds great.

  • $50 that he came up with these alternate lyrics right at the moment of singing them!

  • hahahahahahaha 4:14 its not Richie its charlie sheen!!!

  • @BandCShow11dy6 Or Harry Potter!!!

  • 18 people don't know anything about rock

  • lol , gillan rules

    love the guys attitude

  • Does anyone know what album this particular version if off of? This isn't the same version as the Machine Head one.

  • @MetallicaFan1108 i'ed say a demo version cause roger still has his p bass which by the time machine head was recorded he had a ric 4001 cause he had to trade his p bass for an amp but i could be wrong

  • @IMaiden89

Rickenbacker 4001 is more expensive than Fender Jazz Bass or Fender Precision Bass.

  • @IMaiden89

Rickenbacker 4001 is more expensive than Fender Jazz Bass or Fender Precision Bass. But you're right, it's a promotion video.

  • Ian was completely out of it. He he had no idea what was about to come out of his mouth.

  • Thats got to be the loosest but yet tightest version I have ever heard.

    Very cool

  • oke asyik pancen bener bener mbahe rock.....

  • al diablo la tarea, quiero ver a deep purple

  • Ritchie is more enchanting than the devil here.

  • Cyrus Barnaby made it back from Bogyland and joined DEEP PURPLE

  • Cyrus Barnaby on lead guitar....as well as Micky Mouse and all that lala!

  • Great bareknuckles early rock and D.P. at their best. Gotta love that lyrical improvisation.

  • ritchie's hat fuckin' rules!

  • @1BOREDMFE He should be carrying a blunderbuss

  • jesus, what the hell was going on backstage before this video was shot?!

  • @IndoeLoop I believe its called LSD

  • Video itself was the best sound you can imagine!

  • fukkin sick.

  • deepy p ftw

  • sooo vintage!!! awesome version, they're Rock History

  • gillan is baked to the max.

  • Wow, old recording, and I LOVE Deep Purple, but I much perfer the guitar solo we've all come to know that's more closely associated with this tune. I don't know if you'd call this a butcher, but it's pretty close to butchering, in what is my opinion, one of the best guitar solos ever!

  • when is people gonna realize that this is real music? gosh.. I fucking hate justin beaver :P

  • weh tengkorak, mana ko jumpa video ni? haha... aku igt mat saleh mana upload vid. nice video bro...

  • woooooooooooooooooo!!!

    severa musica!!

  • Well it was usual to play your "hit-single" there at the Beat-Club, so I wondered why DP played this song before they recorded it ? Why this kind of version ? Maybe the reason might be found in the words of Uschi Nerke, the moderator : The last Time this band was here the Phones were running hot , because alot of people could not stand their aweful noisy sound!!! Well I love this ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • do you think maybe Blackmore improvised most of the solo because he broke a string almost immediately after he started? 3:48, watch him pull the string out of the way and continue on his merry mayhem of musical madness, awesome!!!

  • these guys are sooooo much better then the overrated beatles.

  • @bigguy4570 Wrong! Deep Purple had a few good songs but The Beatles are still relavant after 40 years...what other band(s) can you say this about?

  • @Moogaar1 Aerosmith. ...and they are STILL touring AND making ALBUMS with ALL the original members. That's 4 decades...so you lose.

  • @metallikuh520 Aerosmith's last good album came out over 20 years ago so your argument holds no water so YOU lose fuckwad.

  • @Moogaar1 You're retarded....you said what other band is relevant for 40 years and aerosmith is. Saying their last good album came out 20 years ago is just your dumbass opinion. I proved you wrong so deal with it you pussy.

  • @metallikuh520 Yeah it's my opinion and obviously you have issues with anyone who disagrees with your half-wit mind so blow it out your ass you motherfucker.

  • wut bass amp that roger glover use that?

  • @silentboy85 Marshall stack with two tall 4x12 cabinets

  • @MarshallAmpsKickAss he is using guitar amp for his amp?

  • @silentboy85 Its too hard to see. But he is using a marshall. The cabinets to the L/H side are Lesile cabinets for the organ

  • Man, these guys OWN!

I'm guessing this is an early version of this song before it was refined for recording. The reason i say this is the John Lord solo is missing the decending Bach sounding part Gillian, although drunk, seems to be improvising lyrics and Ritchie's solo contains not ONE note of the solo we know so well. Even on Ritchie's worst nights he would at least play the last half of the famous solo.

    Anyone agree?

  • @couch63 I'd say that each show's performance would have to take in the factor of how much alcohol and drugs were used before hand. Then as long as the band stayed in the pocket of the groove all the rest is just improvisation. And that sounds great how ever they play it.

  • @couch63 I'm not sure if I agree on your guess that this is a pre-recording version. But I agree absolutely on what you say about the guitar solo.

  • @MrColfan

this is "Fireball" time, so they simply modified the song. this isn't an earlier version of highway star

  • tension didn`t always make tight, this might been one of those shows where the rest of the band asked IG how bad do u wanna be JC

  • Ritchie Blackmore, undisputed master of the whammy bar.

  • This was my first band to see in concert. It cost 2.50. That's right. Everyone used Marshall amps, including the keyboards. Very cool.

  • Ritchie Blackmore is one of the greatest guitarists....so underrated. his style is so wild, raw and just damn good. he practically set the standards for metal guitar

  • hey pb you try screaming in the right key for 30 seconds, so how come you aint a star if its so easy, you friggin idiot

  • @midlocal Too bad it's not in the right key the whole time.

  • kansas,steppen wolves, b. sabath

  • drunk ass gillian.

  • any fool can stand up and scream.. drummer kicks ass and so does guitar..

  • Man I hate when Ritchie fucks guitar like this!

  • Purple's very best!!!

  • My favorite Deep Purple tune!! I bought 'Machine Head' back in 1972..it was my very first album. I still have it today.

    Classic video & tune..

    Thanks for posting this!

    Thumbs up!!!!

    64m >:-)

  • what jons organ solo is clean & what the hell was that mickey mouse referance, damn you warner bros, im glad this aint the album version, & they cut rogers sweet bass intro out to :(

  • Is this at the beat club?

  • @CluttProductions I think at the "Musikladen"! "Beat Club" was dropped in 1971.

  • По ходу Гиллан че-то там намудрил со словами.

  • Comment removed

  • One word to describe that Blackmore solo: INSANE!!!

  • if you want to see the WORST version ever of this-goto BAD REPUTATION AND FRIENDS-you'll die laughing its so shit

  • bizzarro!

  • any version of this song is great!

  • Gillannnnnnnnnn!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • blackmore \m/

  • Awesome, look wasted as fuck too =D

  • ish song.

  • I think its a try-out before the lyrics and solos were actually written-it still rocks along. My favorite Purple song, tho Im not the biggest Purple fan. Blackmore is an amazing guitarist and its always great to see him throttle a Stratocaster

  • If you want to see the WORST version EVER of this-go to bad reputation and friends highway star-if you leave a comment-you get abuse-you have to see it to believe how bad it is

  • haha yeah men, the worst cover i have ever seen :)

  • and then some-if you leave them a comment-you'll get dogs abuse and they then remove it-its hilarious-you cant help some folk!!!

  • there fucking wasted man

  • Like this version better than the one from Japan. Richie looks like the Wicked Witch of the West here.

  • Which year is that??

To see the best Clips of the world, visit my channel!!

  • Man they were so wasted here it's not even funny lol!

  • maybye its loose, maybye you dont like it lose. But this is rock n roll, bru! I think this performance is as colorful and as evocative as the visuals. Goes to show you. good guitar!!!!!!!!!! fuck it

  • Am I really the only one here to see a sloppy way too fast performance. Powerful sure, but it just seems like they were under-rehearsed here.

    Oh well.

  • It really does sound like they'd just written the first draft of the song and are practicing it.

The merciless rhythmic precision of the studio version couldn't be further from this.

And Jon Lord's solo here is very different from anything he played after the studio version was laid down --- in particularl, the arpeggio sequence on the A - E/G# - G - D/F# progression is ALWAYS there in the other versions I know

  • lol nice improvisation on the lyrics, love this version =D

    purple rules!

  • son los mejores

  • This is the strongest play !!

Nobody gonna take my car ・・・Nobody gonna take their performance anymore .

  • never going to be like a band. are unique. that the formation of the only deep purple. which we will always remember. greetings and thanks for reminding one of the biggest rock bands in the world. bye !!! see my videos

  • IMPROV! IMPROV! IMPROV! IMPROV!

    Raise it to the MAX!!!

3:39 Aw shit, Ritchie did my trick before I thought of doing it... So it isn't mines... I was shocked to see that, he did it like me, but I thought I created something new, but I was wrong :(

Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple knew how to improv.

Look at that! A white hammond... Ughhhh! WOW!!! Me want it! Never seen it before?

  • stones, led, beatles, who, deep p., creedence.....

  • this is one of the most powerful fucking performances a group has ever done in the history of rock.I meaning exactly this one, only the made in japan version is superior if it is to this one.Gillan oh my god, he is totally into the song.

  • Great embryonic live version of HS. Gillans voice is superb here (even if the lyrics have still to be finished, ha ha). I'm a fan of DP's career as a whole but the live chemistry of the MK2 lineup is unmatched imo. Cheers for posting.

  • Deep Purple is a deep purple and thatst it.

  • My favorite deep purple Video,so much energy in this performance and i like the psychedelic backgrounds of the program that they were playing on.I only liked the gillan/blackmore version of this band. raised on his voice from the Jesus christ superstar album from 1970.

  • What's up? Deep Purple is the BAND! Anyone else? Take a nap!

  • Deep Purle did have some lyric's. Strange kind of woman, Mary Long,Sometimes i feel like screaming. Sure they sing about women, most band do but they dont sing about love

  • I agree to a certain extent with Benglee14. Half the time you can't understand the lyrics to any rock song anyway. It's the way the lead singer's voice is used as another instrument when, as benglee14 put it, the band is "jamming out". Deep Purple (esp. Mach2) was an absolute JUGGERNAUT in the history of rock and roll. Forget it! They were an awesome, classically trained, group of hard rocking musicians. We are lucky to have them to listen too!

  • I was waiting for the "I seed her" lyric and was disappointed.

  • lol when he sings, he kinda sounds and sings like "new wheels on the block" (handicap people singin from Norway) It's hilarious, you all should watch it :)

  • you know I love deep purple...but damn man..I see why they never made it bigger...they didnt stick to the studio versions of their new songs..they seem to keep going off on these weird trips here and there and just "free stylying" on the spot..thats ok with older songs but not ones that just come out...and here it doesnt seem that he really remembers the lyrics that well...

  • That show took place in 1971, so Highway Star was not even released. What they played at this show is obviously a very early version of the song and so parts of the music as well as the lyrics are different to the final version we all know, released on Machine Head in 1972.

  • well thats cool...i can understand that...but still he should have been a little more together on his lyrics...I mean am I really wrong there? you can obviously see hes just spouting stuff out. I mean I love um im not putting um down, but really? really? he could have come up with something here besides mumbling..really no offense

  • i agree with you there, its not there best version of highway star

  • yeah...thanks..i figured most people would have slammed me for my comments..i love deep...but I do have to be honest...thanks

  • This shit freaked my parents out when i listened to it..

  • Dutter: You know Gillan WROTE the lyrics to that song. Here he was probably drunk ;) But THANK GOD they didn't "stick to the studio versions". There is something you have completely misunderstood about Deep Purple. Deep Purple was a REAL band meaning they wrote their songs while touring, played them live a lot and THEN recorded them. That is what REAL music is all about and why there is so little REAL music written theese days. But OK you weren't even BORN whe Purple ruled. ;-)

  • Klyons: What about them? Beatles was a really good live band and they only stopped touring because it became impossible due to their popularity. TRUE they made a lot of their really good material in the studio but all their numbers are written with the help of an accoustic guitar.

  • RICHI BLACMORE RULES

  • Psichedelici!!!

  • Hi crappin goodie good dog fart. Blatter

    control

  • It was good stuff and very gleebon globbin

  • ROCK N ROLL RACING!!!!!!

  • Rock N Roll Racing was a fucking gem of a game. And had the most badass 16-bit soundtrack ever. Putting this song on took so much ballz. Such a good call.

  • Great to hear the early version of "Highway Star", my all time best rock song.

  • I love this...lol Ian's making it up as he goes. Awesome :)

  • Gill didn't know the words yet, lol.

  • What means he didn't know the words? Just the words were like that and then, in stusio version dp changed them.

  • Ian Gillan is drunk and druged

  • Ritchie Blackmore's looking like Elvis fucked a pilgrim but damn they were jamming here lol.

  • Steve McQueen and Mickey Mouse and all that stuff......Hilarious!!

  • This song is about a mustang bullit 1968

  • de verdad? tiene sentido

mmm is that true? cause it makes sence

  • se cagaron? lol

  • NICE live !!!! awesome DP !!!

  • Ritchie was so fuckin' amazing back then...

  • They all were... of course.

    Best line up!

    Fireball rules !!!!!!!!

  • Ritchie fuckin rulessss!!!!!

  • good deep song.

  • Its actually an awesome version and the lyrics illustrate the main character of the song more. It's just not the way you are used to hearing it. Blackmore's solo at 3:40 is really gripping.

  • People always say that "Glen Hughes was totally drunk on this show", "Ozzy was stoned"... but no evidences!

I believe Ian was high on something, for the way he sings and switches the lyrics

The performance was awesome and DP is great, that happens to every musician

  • you're kinda' right..."mickey mouse" at 0:50 says for it self I guess...

  • No my friend. This was the first version of Highway Star. Done BEFORE the studio recording on the "Machine Head" album.

  • Well, I didn't know that. But still, we can only guess wether people was stoned or not on the videos

  • whoooo ke viva deep purple XD yeah!!!

asi es el buen rock :P no como ahora chingos de mierda ke se dise rock sobre todo con esa mamada de atrevete a soniar D:

  • His name is Gillan not Gillian...

  • yeah!

  • deep forever

  • deep

  • n_n ooo me ncanta depp purple xDDDD!

  • I've seen this song live, and Gillian did a good job!

  • this is THE LIVE PERFORMANCE!!!

    perfect!!!

  • The best band ever

  • Best version by FAR!

Sooo much energy in this vid :)

  • totally, thats how old music was!

most new artists are all so terrible

  • all the new artists are too pop.

even so-called rock is becoming pop

  • No but there was alot of crap back then, too, the only reason we think back then was so good, compared to today is because we can't remember all the shit bands..

  • you got that Fuckin right man, keeping the martians away... Killer Version , they are going WILD in this vid, Awesome

  • are you nuts...did you heard studio version of this song, and vocals at the begining...COVERDALE COULDN'T DO THAT IN A HUNDRED YEARS!this are gillans songs, and no one could perform it beter than he could,+ he's a bigger showman than they are.(but still think hughes is a great singer,he could 've done a fine job without coverdale.but ONLY in songs in a style of burn album-NOT MACHINE HEAD)

  • lets just say it like this-if you were right, you wolde have some thumbs up,not 6 down....and you know Ian Gillan and he confess to you that he knows that he's no better than coverdale...give me a break

  • thumbs up means nothing to me, I GOT MY own opinion about things and rockstars. You know Gillan are not going to knock door by door sayin´ "hello, I am Ian Gillan but fuckin´ David Coverdale rules", he´s ran out, not a dumb guy.

  • fuck you

  • utter bollocks mate..ive seen deep purple 3 times ...gillian is the best!

  • @0000hess

I have a two-disc set from the Coverdale-Hughes era called "MK III - The Final Concerts," and they played "Highway Star" and it was a train-wreck. When Coverdale did his own stuff it was pretty good, but when he did Gillan's material he didn't do it justice.

I think this performance is a disaster, but it is better than the Coverdale - Hughes version.

  • i like the way that Blackmore solo.

  • thanks sabbathman8815..dp sounds good even if you are used to the usual highway version....this is a freakin one of the best rock songs of all time....creatures from outer space who hear this song wll have second doubts conquering us...we are freakin awesome!!!hear this !!!!

  • deep purple fucking rocks

  • Hey Gillan get the lyrics right sucker! I love Gillan, but he sucks on this version! I saw DP 2 summers ago. They still sound great! I was listening to Born Again by Black Sabbath the other day! That is the best Sabbath cd after the Dio material! Gillan kicks ass on Born Again! Ronnie James Dio is the best singer Sabbath ever had!

  • yeah deep or die

  • Esto es música y no los Jonas Brother xD
