Gillan was either drunk or stoned outa his gord man. Buttons and everything?? LMAO I love DP, my favorite band ever, but this is one shitty rendition of HStar.
Gillan wasn't stones or drunk. This video was recored before the song was released on Machine Head. It wasn't finished at this time, that's why he improvises the lyrics and why the solos are different.
Ritchie Blackmore apparently didn't like to be video taped. Maybe he thought either he would loose his soul or someone would rip off his chops (early Malmsteen). You can't find decent video of Blackmore. Alex Van Halen said the the same thing to Eddie. he wanted Eddie to play facing his amps so no one would rip him off. It happened anyway.
And just another example that it's not the singer that makes one band great. Gillan sang some shit-load of words here, but the song still sounds great.
@MetallicaFan1108 i'ed say a demo version cause roger still has his p bass which by the time machine head was recorded he had a ric 4001 cause he had to trade his p bass for an amp but i could be wrong
Wow, old recording, and I LOVE Deep Purple, but I much perfer the guitar solo we've all come to know that's more closely associated with this tune. I don't know if you'd call this a butcher, but it's pretty close to butchering, in what is my opinion, one of the best guitar solos ever!
Well it was usual to play your "hit-single" there at the Beat-Club, so I wondered why DP played this song before they recorded it ? Why this kind of version ? Maybe the reason might be found in the words of Uschi Nerke, the moderator : The last Time this band was here the Phones were running hot , because alot of people could not stand their aweful noisy sound!!! Well I love this ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!
do you think maybe Blackmore improvised most of the solo because he broke a string almost immediately after he started? 3:48, watch him pull the string out of the way and continue on his merry mayhem of musical madness, awesome!!!
@Moogaar1 You're retarded....you said what other band is relevant for 40 years and aerosmith is. Saying their last good album came out 20 years ago is just your dumbass opinion. I proved you wrong so deal with it you pussy.
@metallikuh520 Yeah it's my opinion and obviously you have issues with anyone who disagrees with your half-wit mind so blow it out your ass you motherfucker.
I'm guessing this is an early version of this song before it was refined for recording. The reason i say this is the John Lord solo is missing the decending Bach sounding part Gillian, although drunk, seems to be improvising lyrics and Ritchie's solo contains not ONE note of the solo we know so well. Even on Ritchie's worst nights he would at least play the last half of the famous solo.
@couch63 I'd say that each show's performance would have to take in the factor of how much alcohol and drugs were used before hand. Then as long as the band stayed in the pocket of the groove all the rest is just improvisation. And that sounds great how ever they play it.
Ritchie Blackmore is one of the greatest guitarists....so underrated. his style is so wild, raw and just damn good. he practically set the standards for metal guitar
what jons organ solo is clean & what the hell was that mickey mouse referance, damn you warner bros, im glad this aint the album version, & they cut rogers sweet bass intro out to :(
I think its a try-out before the lyrics and solos were actually written-it still rocks along. My favorite Purple song, tho Im not the biggest Purple fan. Blackmore is an amazing guitarist and its always great to see him throttle a Stratocaster

The merciless rhythmic precision of the studio version couldn't be further from this.
And Jon Lord's solo here is very different from anything he played after the studio version was laid down --- in particularl, the arpeggio sequence on the A - E/G# - G - D/F# progression is ALWAYS there in the other versions I know

I agree to a certain extent with Benglee14. Half the time you can't understand the lyrics to any rock song anyway. It's the way the lead singer's voice is used as another instrument when, as benglee14 put it, the band is "jamming out". Deep Purple (esp. lol when he sings, he kinda sounds and sings like "new wheels on the block" (handicap people singin from Norway) It's hilarious, you all should watch it :)
you know I love deep purple...but damn man..I see why they never made it bigger...they didnt stick to the studio versions of their new songs..they seem to keep going off on these weird trips here and there and just "free stylying" on the spot..thats ok with older songs but not ones that just come out...and here it doesnt seem that he really remembers the lyrics that well...
That show took place in 1971, so Highway Star was not even released. What they played at this show is obviously a very early version of the song and so parts of the music as well as the lyrics are different to the final version we all know, released on Machine Head in 1972.
well thats cool...i can understand that...but still he should have been a little more together on his lyrics...I mean am I really wrong there? you can obviously see hes just spouting stuff out. Dutter: You know Gillan WROTE the lyrics to that song. Here he was probably drunk ;) But THANK GOD they didn't "stick to the studio versions". There is something you have completely misunderstood about Deep Purple. Deep Purple was a REAL band meaning they wrote their songs while touring, played them live a lot and THEN recorded them. That is what REAL music is all about and why there is so little REAL music written theese days. But OK you weren't even BORN whe Purple ruled. ;-)
Klyons: What about them? Beatles was a really good live band and they only stopped touring because it became impossible due to their popularity. TRUE they made a lot of their really good material in the studio but all their numbers are written with the help of an accoustic guitar.
Rock N Roll Racing was a fucking gem of a game. And had the most badass 16-bit soundtrack ever. Putting this song on took so much ballz. Such a good call.
Its actually an awesome version and the lyrics illustrate the main character of the song more. It's just not the way you are used to hearing it. Blackmore's solo at 3:40 is really gripping.
No but there was alot of crap back then, too, the only reason we think back then was so good, compared to today is because we can't remember all the shit bands..
are you nuts...did you heard studio version of this song, and vocals at the begining...COVERDALE COULDN'T DO THAT IN A HUNDRED YEARS!this are gillans songs, and no one could perform it beter than he could,+ he's a bigger showman than they are.(but still think hughes is a great singer,he could 've done a fine job without coverdale.but ONLY in songs in a style of burn album-NOT MACHINE HEAD)
lets just say it like this-if you were right, you wolde have some thumbs up,not 6 down....and you know Ian Gillan and he confess to you that he knows that he's no better than coverdale...give me a break
thumbs up means nothing to me, I GOT MY own opinion about things and rockstars. You know Gillan are not going to knock door by door sayin´ "hello, I am Ian Gillan but fuckin´ David Coverdale rules", he´s ran out, not a dumb guy.
I have a two-disc set from the Coverdale-Hughes era called "MK III - The Final Concerts," and they played "Highway Star" and it was a train-wreck. When Coverdale did his own stuff it was pretty good, but when he did Gillan's material he didn't do it justice.
I think this performance is a disaster, but it is better than the Coverdale - Hughes version.
thanks sabbathman8815..dp sounds good even if you are used to the usual highway version....this is a freakin one of the best rock songs of all time....creatures from outer space who hear this song wll have second doubts conquering us...we are freakin awesome!!!hear this !!!!
Hey Gillan get the lyrics right sucker! I love Gillan, but he sucks on this version! I saw DP 2 summers ago. They still sound great! I was listening to Born Again by Black Sabbath the other day! That is the best Sabbath cd after the Dio material! Gillan kicks ass on Born Again! Ronnie James Dio is the best singer Sabbath ever had!

good deep song.

Its actually an awesome version and the lyrics illustrate the main character of the song more. It's just not the way you are used to hearing it. Blackmore's solo at 3:40 is really gripping.

People always say that "Glen Hughes was totally drunk on this show", "Ozzy was stoned"... but no evidences!
I believe Ian was high on something, for the way he sings and switches the lyrics
The performance was awesome and DP is great, that happens to every musician

you're kinda' right..."mickey mouse" at 0:50 says for it self I guess...

No my friend. This was the first version of Highway Star. Done BEFORE the studio recording on the "Machine Head" album.

No but there was alot of crap back then, too, the only reason we think back then was so good, compared to today is because we can't remember all the shit bands..

Ian Gillian really sucks, you can imagine "Machine Head" with Coverdale & Huges on singin´... AMAZING!
F**k off, Ian.
0000hess 2 years ago
are you nuts...did you heard studio version of this song, and vocals at the begining...COVERDALE COULDN'T DO THAT IN A HUNDRED YEARS!this are gillans songs, and no one could perform it beter than he could,+ he's a bigger showman than they are.(but still think hughes is a great singer,he could 've done a fine job without coverdale.but ONLY in songs in a style of burn album-NOT MACHINE HEAD)

Nutty sucker..Coverdale is much bigger singer than Gillan, even Gillan knows it.
0000hess 2 years ago
lets just say it like this-if you were right, you wolde have some thumbs up,not 6 down....and you know Ian Gillan and he confess to you that he knows that he's no better than coverdale...give me a break
jaganjacfan 2 years ago
thumbs up means nothing to me, I GOT MY own opinion about things and rockstars. You know Gillan are not going to knock door by door sayin´ "hello, I am Ian Gillan but fuckin´ David Coverdale rules", he´s ran out, not a dumb guy.

@0000hess
