Quite honestly, those who live in America think of Operation Overlord (D-Day) as a victory (although military-wise it was), but it was actually a total loss. It was a loss for the Germans of course, but it was also a loss to the Americans and their family members who did in fact "Give their today for our tomorrow." Either way, no matter how you look at it, it was a loss on both sides. And please don't give me any garbage comments; I'm speaking my mind and my opinion and don't need to here it.

Gorbachev indeed initiated reforms. In most soviet republics this meant that protests were not beaten down that much any more, and this has helped their independence. The soviet union was not utopia. Not at all. If you want to live under communist rule, go to cuba. Or the PRC. You'll be suprised..

It does seem as a semi-paradise, or at least could be without all the criminal sanctions that make the government look bad. The problem is that Cuba is still very unfree and controlled. But from a economic and social point of view it is near perfect. Just look at how that poor little nations manages to take care of its people better than the US. Especially during Huricanes.

The PRC on the other hand is similiar to a stalinist dystopia though a bit better ofcourse. It is extremely unfree, it has no real social and economic structure, the people are controlled in many things, the leaders are not admired but respected (difference). Also the country has some sick fascist tendencies where the government steps into private enterprise and makes it into something completely different. Not socialist, not free.

There you have the disadvantage of pure communism. People struggle for the power, and without any checks of law, soon a dictatorial gouvernment will arise. However, the current democracies have arranged many of the things the socialists of the past have fought and died for (minimum wages, money for the poor), while maintaining a good economy, something the communist gouvernments usually fail to do. Cuba is less oppressive then the PRC, but both are much less free than the western democracies.

Have to admit, the historical evidence is clearly against claim in favour of the russians (and remind me who signed a pact with Nazi Germany re the invasion of Poland, the Soviet Union) and they certianly did replace one tryanny with another, the eastern block was not liberated but forced to linger in Hell for a further forty + years (Gulags spring to mind) Stalinism was as brutal as the Nazi's and follow on regimes within the Soviet Union were also exceptionally repressive and cruel.

Very true, at Stalingrad'43 the Red Army made the greatest sacrifice to end Germans greed for superiority. Besides, several times before the war even broke out at its worst Soviet suggested a co-operation with the European imperial countries to avoid Germany's plans to sodomize the continent, these however kept giving the cold hand and waited until the germans were practically defeated by Soviet before they stepped in as "heroes". Besides all the imperial countries were responsible for the war.
