I love the original SO much better. The jazzy turn is NOT working for Kirsty's almost Jamaican or Cuban feel. They actually clash a lot and don't do the song justice. It's kind of sad, because it's such a good song, and I can't think anything bad of a person who likes it. Unless, of course, they side with Celestine. ;)
I think the band transposed the song to a new key which really changed its sound - probably to fit within the singer's vocal range. I agree, this performance doesn't work for that song. Fine musicians though.
I wouldn't say the audience was 'unruly'. Alyson has a great rapport and engages them brilliantly. It was a privilege to be at this gig at the world famous Bulls Head, Barnes. I can see Alyso headling at Ronnie Scott's and The Blue Note, New York in the future
