The problem lies in the fact that a week after the invasion of Afghanistan, when the Taleban said they'd hand out bin Laden to a neutral country to be tried in a civil court, George W Bush said "There's no need for that, we know he's guilty". they did say "prove to us that Bin Laden is guilty and then we'll decide if to give him to you."

besides, Bin Laden was too dangerous to be left alive because what if alqaeda had taken a large number hostages in order to get him released

So why not have a trial? They knew about Usama's location for many, many months and they were planning on how to best kill him instead of bringing him to justice. My guess is that having him locked up in Gitmo where he'd be tortured and denied a trial would be bad for the american "image" and so they simply killed him

Obama gave explicit orders to the commandos to kill him - not arrest him - and isn't it strange that apparently the only ones dead are Usama, his son, a woman and 2 couriers? Since you say there were many enemy combatants that were firing back at the commandos.

I'm sure some of the truth of what really happened is going to come forward, and if it doesn't we'll find out within 50 years from now when secret documents are released.

Buried at sea? Apparently he had to be burried within 24 hrs to respect Islamic beliefs, Why then did the body have to leave Pakistan, bit strange don't you thibnk. It's been confirmed that Obama gave orders to kill and not arrest bin Laden. Just google "Obama gives order to kill bin Laden/Usama".

Taking him alive would probably be too much of an inconvenience, they'd have to hold a trial, give him a chance to speak, put forward evidence etc. or lock him up in Guantanamo and torture him to death - either way he'd become an even greater symbol.

Revenge was more important than justice.

@meggatonman again the problem is that it's not so easy to arrest someone like that. you have to send forces into hostile territory and you risk having your target escape, so it's a safer bet to assassinate than to try to capture.

even if he was arrested it wouldn't change anything. he would still be considered a martyr by his followers. also keeping him alive would mean constant attempts by his followers to take hostages in order to try to get him released
