A red fox might be a little nervous of a cat, but grays are quite a bit bolder...around here the feral and pet gets have a hard time when they're left outside, mostly cause the coyotes...but no doubt foxed take a few. Thats a cute kitten! And a nice gray fox, thats very interesting behavior shown by the fox. cool video
that fox wants that cat as dinner,,,,he would own that little cat..I live in a heavy wooded area...my cat came in one night on his last life..he was fucked up...bloody,cuts.that whole nine....he went to sleep for 2 days straight woke up on the 3rd day like a champ...lol
@chamchao16 No actually a fox will gladly make a cat into it's next meal and they are actually quite capable of doing just that. I've had a lot of farm cats eaten by a red fox that frequented our farm.
@teckelmn Yes. The male arctic had a hormonal imbalance. Sadly, health concerns appear to be common with members of the true arctic fox species sold as pets. I don't recommend getting one unless you know for sure you can trust the breeder and their stock. Sticking with the red fox or gray fox species would be your best bet. There is a much larger gene pool of both of these species available to ensure less inbreeding and better health and behavior when raised by responsible breeders.
The next time you breed a litter (? proper term?) of foxes, any chance you can try to keep a cat around them? I'm really curious to see how they would act. I love both animals and would love to have both, but I would hate to see them in constant conflict. Really it's asking a lot, and I've seen a few videos here of foxes that have taken on the habits of cats (purring, etc.) but none of the videos I've seen have felt as legitimate as yours.
We're not really in a position to have a cat. We can't keep one outdoors because of the dogs and foxes putting the cat at risk nor indoors due to the cat putting our hisser roaches and rats at risk. We do plan to keep a kit from the next litter though and I will try to give it some exposure to my cousin's cat as it's growing up to see how it does and let you know. It'll be next spring.
Have you ever been to Sybil's Den? I know there are people on there that have both cats and foxes.
The best way to have peace between your pets, fox and either a cat or a dog, is to get them both at the same time while they're young. I heard that the best playmate you can get for your fox is a dog. But honestly like how every dog is different, every fox is too. Something may work for one while it may not work for another.
Foxes are a skittish species and usually don't bond well with others as an adult.
This was one of your more docile foxes? I wonder if they can be taught to be nicer towards newcomers. I guess I should get a cat first if I want both animals.
Shawnee actually seemed scared of the kitten. She may have seen the kitten as trying to invade her territory or as a threat to her or to me (the kitten kept jumping on me). She only acted aggressively when the kitten got really close to her pen, otherwise she just watched closely. Although her previous owner didn't have a cat, it's still possible that she may have had a negative experience with one when she was younger that we don't know about. She was almost a year old when we got her.
I'm sure a fox would be fine with a cat if raised around one from a baby, but I don't think they'd actually play together. They'd probably just tolerate each other. I would be careful having a fox around small kittens though, just to be safe.
the cat's laughing on the inside.

It's a Culpeo Fox right?
So small yet so powerful, I heard that two or more culpeos can bring down animals so much larger than them.

Sorry to bother you,
But any thoughts on the life spans and or health concerns of your different types of foxes in captivity.
I know you posted issues with the arctic but I think you stated it was a hormone problem.
Thanks for your time.

Be careful or the fox will eat your kitten. I swear. You'll be sorry.

Uh... thanks for the concern but if you'd read the description you'd know it's a stray cat someone dumped in my driveway. It already has a new home.

Shawnee is just a pet but we breed and sell the red foxes' babies.
