When you see Rocamadour and the Black Virgin, one sees how beautifully Poulenc captures the essence of the surroundings and the Virgen herself---oh, those eyes following you around the room! And yes, I walked the almost 500 steps up from the Dordogne to see this miracle---

why do people think about sexual orientation and religion while listening to such a music???i'm singing it with my choir and i always think only to the beauty of it while singing...you'd better just listen and be thankful to Poulenc for having written such a beautiful thing.

D’où vient ce culte de la vierge noire? Est il permis d'adorer des statues? Non, c'est interdit dans la Parole de Dieu, la Bible elle-même (Ancien et Nouveau Testament). Les chrétiens ne lisent plus la Bible. C'est une aberration envers Dieu d'adorer une statue. Ou est-ce écrit dans la Parole qu'il faut adorer la vierge? Nulle part. Il est aussi écrit dans la Bible que Jésus est le seul médiateur entre les hommes et Dieu.

Ce que je dis, c'est que :la personne et la musique qu'il écrit sont deux choses différentes, il y a plein d'exemples de cela, et dans les deux sens (des gens "bien" qui écrivent des navets, et des génies insupportables).

Le débat pour moi c'est : faut-il juger la musique d'après la personne ? Moi je dis non : si une musique me plaît, et si j'apprends après que le gars est naze, je serai déçu, mais ça ne changera rien au fait que sa musique m'aura plu (à moins de me mentir à moi-même).

@gabsylv Well, it's true he had same-sex attractions throughout his life, but he also proposed marriage to a woman and is known to have fathered an illegitimate daughter. So I'm skeptical of calling Poulenc "gay".

Of course, culture determines the modes through which our sexual desires are expressed. Today, "gay" implies 'exclusive homosexuality', a cultural form that wasn't normative for the upper classes in Poulenc's (or Wilde's) time. I use "gay" to describe these men as a strategy for contemporary sexual politics- emphasizing same-sex desire as root commonality--not to suggest an exact correspondence with modern identitarianism.

Absolutely one of the hardest pieces I have done in my choral career requiring lots of breath control. Also one of my all-time favorite pieces to sing. Kudos to you for dynamics and sending chills up my spine! Well done!
