  • Those are some crazy shoes John. Do you have any idea where I can pick up some ghost pepper seeds? I got some from E-bay, but the were fake. Just wondering if you know of a good web site for peppers.

  • John - Here in new Jersey rabbits are everywhere, how do I keep them out do I have to fence in the raised beds, and also i guess we dont need to till the grass under just cardboard over it alo and then add the compost, as a kid we used the soil but the compost to buy looks much easier to work with

  • Thanks for the update. Their garden looks good and It seems every thing grew fast too.

  • I see John's toe shoes! thanks for the video.

  • Hi John, I know you have a drip system set up at your home garden, but how do you water your community garden plots? I'm looking for some good, efficient ideas, but a timer set up is not an option at this particular garden.

  • I have a hose-end timer (powered by 4 AA batteries) and a... drip system! I probably have an episode on it somewhere. I recomend the gilmour 9400 hose-bibbb timer, as it has a ball valve, which is more durable than a diaphragm type valve.

  • @growingyourgreens so, you use a drip system at your community plot too? Unfortunately, that's not an option for me. I guess I could set up a drip line and just manually attach a hose each day. I've also been researching Ollas. Have you heard of these ceramic pots that you bury in the soil and fill them with water?

  • Yes, I use drip at my community garden.. you can do a drip system that is connected to a big 60 gallon drum, that is raised up several feet off the ground, which has a spigot on the bottom (ala rain barrel) but may be filled with water). The timer will operate the flow and gravity will do the feeding. I have heard of the ollas, but never looked into them.

  • @growingyourgreens Oh wow, I didn't know you could use a timer on that sort of a set up. Thanks John!

  • You are an inspiration.

  • wow there stuff really took off its so nice to see. I love being able to walk right out to the garden to get my vegetables then to go to the store and find that I am getting tomatoes from mexico. Do you know how far alberta canada is from mexico!

  • Slugs love marigolds in my garden too!

  • looks awesome.......I wanna be like Jon

  • WOW the beds filled in quite nicely! Glad to see the hard work paid off. Great job Rick, Karin and John! You guys are all inspirational and very informative. Grow the world back green ~

  • Amazing!

  • Marigolds repelling insects is a myth. The chemical that is toxic to bugs is in the roots and all parts exposed to uv above ground does not have the chemical because the sun destroys it. I grow marigolds in my butterfly garden.

  • @martenfisher1 No shit?

  • good video John

  • if you are talking about marigolds, do you mean tagetes or calendula? i have always thought, that marigold in english is calendula... but now i saw, you called tagetes as marigold? is that true? if yes, do you eat tagetes flowers? calendula is definitely edible and also has healing powers ,but i have never heard, that tagetes is edible.

  • Yes, I eat ALL marigolds. They are ALL edible. The question for some is do they taste good. Certain varieities taste BETTER than others for culinary uses. So this means, yes, I do eat Calendula officinalis and Tagetes patula. Please note: I do not eat "large quantities" of flower petals, nor do I juice them. I add a few in with salads, and other meals.

  • @growingyourgreens

    thanks!

  • Cool :)

  • Good job, Rick and Karin. Your garden looks great. You won't be hungry for the entire summer season. You have so much food!

  • Thanks for the update. Maybe tree kale will be on my list for next year! Marigolds..I did try to eat the flowers for the first time after your cucumber soup, and edible flower video. Hope i didn't eat slugs..I didn't look!
