Mi abuelo tenia uno de estos y lo vendio a mil pesos uruguayos que seria 50 dolares esstaba en muy buen estado conmotor original y pintura original que pena
my 56 saved my life not once but twice ,,,u got to love them for their frame,,,strong ..an i still have my 56 even after a 55 mph wreck u would never know
@DRNEGOLICIS dont know about that my 56 only got 16 mpg 265 pg...283 is only 10 over my 92 chevy 350 4x4 fleetside with a 342 gear gets 21 mph at 65 mph...now the ones with 373s get about 18 its all in the set up
Entertaining and yet educational they definitely don't make em like they used to. All we get now is recyclable plastic parts and computers. REAL style and performance is a thing of the past. . . .
This was the revolutionary car that changed every car that came after it. Many options became standard and old engineering became modernized. The 55 has more in common with modern cars than it did with the 54 (that's the positive qualities of course). I have one and it always turns heads. Working with brand new cars I'd still take my 55 over any of them, as I drive home everyday without any problems, and if it did I could at least fix it myself.
Yep, and the two things I loved best from that '55 were the ball joint suspension and the small block, I enjoy my '57 as much as that '55 you own!!! Love the Tri-Fives!!!
corvette came out the year before... didn't it have fiberglass? hmmmmmm the penny pinching began in the 70's... lot of junk produced... The disgrace of the Vega will never be lived down..

A 1955 ad in color, when most TVs were black & white? Oh, and how many miles would an average 1955 Chevy go before breaking down? I have a feeling that it was too easy for these cars to get sent to a junkyard.
Actually most cars of this era lasted about 15-20 years or so before needing totally redone if one wanted to keep it, depending of course how someone took care of it, and how many miles they put on it, just like cars today (even a Mercedes or an Acura starts having things blow up around 100,000 miles, as with a friend's Toyota Camry). There are quite a few of old cars still out there, you can see them at what they call an "antique car show".
No one said anything about mileage - just time - considering rust and etc. I have a BMW running at 118,000 miles - and a junky Chevy Caprice at 256,000 miles - I was referring to how cars were made of heavier steel and better craftsmanship at this time - just like German cars are still to this day. As for the 100,000 mile engine rebuild during this time - that is correct - but that isn't the entire car. :P
Maybe only 50,000 to 60,000 miles if you were lucky. That's why cars built between the 1940s to the 1970s didn't hold their value as much as today's cars do. Also they had color tvs available as early as 1954.
@glennmillerfan Hi, I used to be C.S. so I'm still alive if anyone's wondering. Wow, only 50k miles? What parts would typically go out first, and how much trouble would they be to fix? Thanks for replying, even if my original message was over 4 years old.
I'm really not sure what parts went out on them, but I read some discussion board posts by mechaincs who worked on them in the 50s and 60s that they were real pieces of junk that didn't last
These were the days when cars were totally new every year. Think of the years from 1950 to 1960. Each year was a totally different looking car. I'd take any of them!
Totally new every year? Hello? Look at pictures of a 55, 56 & 57. Now tell me what's different except the turn signals and tail lights? Answer: 55 has squared wheel well openings, 56 & 57 they are scallop shaped, 56 & 57 the gas filler is hidden behind a tail light, 57 has dagmars and a modest (compared to the Ford and Chrysler products of the same era) tail fin. Totally new every year? No way. Beautiful styling that still looks great today? YES.
Looking at these cars, it's hard for me to believe just how badly GM has lost its way since the 50's. Where is the inspiration, innovation, and style today? I would love to drive one of these when they were factory fresh :)
To the "managers" at GM: 25 years of front-wheel drive, 4 and V-6 bumper cars have put you straight into the crapper. How about giving us something like this? A well-built, fast, stylish car? Might just sell;-)
Lol. What about the ABS brakes, the front, side and knee air bags, crumple zones and a collapsable steering column, climate control air conditioning, the manual mode for the automatic transmission and eletric windows? You can't be motoramic with out those. Nah, any way, I'd love to have one of those in absoultly perfect condition. Even the way that they describe them, with words like 'glideride' make it sound good.
They don't make 'em like they used to. Don't hit a Toyota or a Nissan with one of those old Chevy's...you'd bash right through them like hitting a wet piece of cardboard!

With OVERDRIVE?!!
When did overdrive go away for decades?
I have cars from the 70s & early 80s, and am trying to get 20MPG.
Who's the brainey think-tanker who did away with OD?
(Maybe an effort by the oil companies? Hmm?)
