Kieslowski had said in interviews that he was aware he made essentially one movie over and over again. I forgot about the old lady and the recycle bin.
If you watch enough Keislowski, you'll understand that this scene is repeated often throughout his films, and that it relates to something he felt guilty about from his youth. I don't know if the main character of the movie helps the old lady in other movies though.
All three films are wonderful.
