I was going to suggest that you build a hoophouse/ greenhouse to extend your growing season.. You can build a 12X20 footer on a weekend for 150 to 200 dollars and they work great. Oh hey I'm growing a mango tree from seed too! Just one from a grocery store mango... might be a hybrid but that's fine with me I just wanted to see if I can grow it! I haven't had any luck growing watermelon either. One of em got to be a pretty good size and one day I woke up to check the garden and the watermelon was split about 2 inches deep down all the way down the middle... ggrrr.
Hey, good luck on your mangoes. I had been talking to a guy who grows them here and he told me the grow into fruiting trees in like 6 months. And yes, i'm with you on the melons..ggrr is right!
