@thespacialone - Nope! The development of American accents in America caused Americans to pronounce things differently overtime. Plenty of English words are Anglo-French in origin and are pronounced the same in English as they are in French, although the spellings are often different. "Louis" has been pronounced as "Loui" in England since day one. It has never been any different. Americans clearly speak "modern" English only with their own accents, slang terms and pronunciation skills.

@LittleDirtyBlonde23 Just not true. While there are indeed many thousands of "English" words with French origins, Americans on balance retain "natural" ANGLICIZED usage above Brits.
I grant you, we probably always pronounced it looey and lefftenant, but in the majority of cases Americans retain or adopted usage as befits English speakers (perhaps given Americans' predominantly Germanic background). The modern French influence extends far beyond solely French-incorporated words, too.

@LittleDirtyBlonde23 My argument is that the English language as spoken by Americans, exported 200-300 years ago, has remained relatively unchanged compared with the English as spoken by Brits, which has picked up European, predominantly French, affectation, over the last 200 years. Largely attributable I presume to the French influence during the 19th century in diplomatic and political circles, which made it de rigueur among Anglo elites, whereupon it filtered down to wider society.

They speak in a way that English themselves have never done. Of course, English back home is going to continue developing and progressing further within 300 hundred years after breaking away from America. That doesn't mean British, English is not true English anymore. Did you expect English vocabulary to come to a stand still?

@thespacialone - Lol, No they don't. Mabey in the sense of pronunciation but certainly not in the sense of accents. English people have never and will never speak with American sounding voices/accents. That is something that has purely developed in American. Many Americans wet themselves in the hope that current US English has closer 'roots' to Elizabethan English than current UK English, we simply can't tell, because UK English of that period was regionally different just as it is now.

@LittleDirtyBlonde23 Oops, lieutenant was of course a terrible example. But why do the English pronounce it lemonade, rather than the American lemon-ade (as in we say orange-ade, lime-ade etc.)? It follows, I suspect, the French-orginated, now pan-European, limonade.
I believe the addition of the french addresse is quite recent (past couple hundred years). Proper Anglicization would render add-ress, as Americans say, not a-dress, as we say.
