Paul Winchell used his earnings to put himself through medical school. He was also an inventor and probably the most famous invention of his is the artificial heart. I also liked him from an episode of The Brady Bunch where he played a hippie tv commercial director who hires the Brady family to be in his laundry detergent commercial.

I have to admit that I thought you were pulling my leg about the artificial heart. Googled it >> found it >>

"In 1963, he patented an artificial heart that he said was a collaboration with Henry J. Heimlich, inventor of the maneuver for choking victims. Mr. Winchell's device was considered the prototype for the one designed by Robert K. Jarvik that was successfully implanted in a human in 1982."
