  • Love all the 'tron clips.......

  • Just hearing the tape loops snap back up is awesome. Nothing will EVER replace a real Mellotron, nothing !!! Great job !!!

  • Sounds very good

  • Thanks for posting a vid of this. I can't believe people don't mention this song when someone asks about great Genesis mellotron tracks

  • Ohhh MEMORIES !!! The waves surrounding the sinking throne, eyes from the past... One of the most uplifting pieces of music that ever got into my ears or should I say into my life.

Many thanks for posting this !

  • its like an angel crying ...

  • most excellent...

  • I just died and gone to heaven.....That sound! WOW!

  • I love you, and though I am a man, I wish to have your babies, simply so I can be near a mellotron and a someone who knows how to play it.

  • Great video, love that tone!

  • You have resurrected some classic music. Thank you.

  • Fantastic - this is one of the most underrated Mellotron solos there is! It's really atmospheric - especially the slightly discordant chords in the middle - well done! The only other person I've seen do this as well apart from Tony is Henry Dagg of Genesis In The Cage - a great tribute band who also use a REAL M400!

  • Thanks to all of you who left nice comments here, glad you enjoyed this clip!

  • could you give me the partiture of this piece? i can't see your fingers and the keys you play :P

  • I would if I could, but I'm afraid I don't have it written down (I worked it out from memory). Also this video is quite misleading because very often the video drifts out of sync with the audio (not sure why it did that!). Anyway, if I do ever get to write it down, or remake the video with fingers more visible(!) I'll let you know.

  • Thanks so much! Well actually I tried to write down the score by listening it a lot of times, and I think i'm quite close to the right one, there's only a couple of notes which sound strange.. i'll work on them! :) By the way, this video has been used by some friends of mine to find out the part on my personal recomandation for it's very good! :) hope you're proud for this!

  • Well I really love the sound of Mellotron, and I really enjoyed you playing this song, one of my Genesis all time favorites.

But, let me ask you something: There's always a background noise when you're not playing anything. What's that?

And second: Every time you play the notes there's like a mechanism sound, like you were using a typewriter. Is that the Mellotron's inner mechanism working?

  • Thanks for that. In answer to your questions: 1) By background noise do you mean a low-pitched sound (almost like a hum)? If so, that was just my synth left in 'drone' mode, holding down the note of D to play the chords alongside :) . 2) Partly, yes - a combination of the keys moving and pressing the tapes down on the replay heads, the tapes rewinding after releasing the keys, and a bad phone camera mic making the noises sound worse than they really are!

  • @tronfan66 Nice work and sounding pretty close, noticed that click all along your video, I believe they had a hard job to get the sound right on the original song on Foxtrot, but you are recording with a cam-mic, so straight of the line would sound better correct. Great mellotron you have!

  • WOW!!! finally one that can really play this wonderful mellotron solo on Can-Utility!!! I've seen a lot of keyboardists but this is the best ever made and more of all it has been played with the CORRECT notes!! Great job, Tronfan! (i'm a 'tronfan too, but i'm 18!)

  • beautiful sound! I really love it. Played very good too!

  • how many money can be neccesary to purchase a mellotron? It sound is deeply hypnotic.

  • It's so nice to see somebody actually give this solo some exposure--it's one of Tony Banks' best and I actually prefer it to the infamous "Watcher" solo.

On the last bit, as I'm sure you know, Banks doubled the 'Tron and the Hammond (but I don't suppose there was much you could have done there, unless you've got one of *those*, too!).

  • Oh, I wish! After I've had the Mellotron restored (hopefully sometime in the new year) I'm going to save up for one of the current Hammonds (either the XK1 or XK3). One day :) ....

  • you should look into an older model, ive seen so many Hammonds on Craigslist for like 200

  • True, there's always the XB2 or XB1 or similar - ideally I'd really like to get something like the L-100 / M-100, but unfortunately lack of enough space limits me to getting something smaller that can sit on top of a keyboard stand! Thanks for the mention of Craigslist tho', I'll check that out.

  • Love to listen to it!
