Actually everyone who studies/learns French, including French Canadians and French French, learn the Standard French (which you called France French). Québec French is just an oral 'dialect' used in informal contexts. n_n I forgot to mention that in the video (I got many comments like yours hehe) so it means that you'd have near to no problem communicating with me or other Canadians; we'd adjust our French accordingly.
@patatevitale Lol, even in America we have many dialects. I live in Missouri and when I go to Iowa people say I have an accent.....I just don't hear it. I was kind of happy when I could understand at the beginning. We just learned greetings.
Hmm...interesting. I actually learned a lot from this video! I take French in school (I'm from Newfoundland btw) and I noticed that I have somehow been taught some version of Canadian French and Parisain French, as I could understand both dialects. This situation also occurs among Canadians too, I mean, a Newfoundlander speaks a much different dialect than an Ontarian. Almost to the point where you almost can't understand them.
I loved your explanation :) I wanted to know the differences between both types of French; if there were just normal dialect differences or almost different languages. In Spanish we also have many differences between the Spanish from Spain and Latin America and between ourselves as well, but we can understand each other perfectly. I guess it's the same with you. Q: what language do you speak with your family?
Also, you made a perfect Canada :D. You are so sweet and adorable, like him!
@TheArtifaz Thank you so much for your kind comment. n_n
I speak only in (Canadian) French with my family since none of them speaks English (I had to work extra hard to learn n_~) but with my friends it's both English and French.
This is actually an awesome look at the difference in the style of French spoken in France and Quebec...language is so beautifully fluid, I have never understood the snobby attitude Parisians show towards Montrealers in regards to language...tabernacle!
... so I spent all my school years trying to learn French... so I could speak French in this bilingual country... but it's all useless because I learned European French lol jk I'm sure it wasn't all a waste. I wish I knew my French better :( but I live in BC it's so hard to learn it when everyone is speaking English all the time!
@blukinoseXD I should have mentioned this in the video because I get so many comments like yours XD. Basically, it's as if we spoke two french's. Our own little 'dialiect' (if I may call it like that) and standard French. We would have not trouble understanding you or replying to you in standard (or european, as you call it) French. n_n
This hopefully has helped a lot of people at least become aware of the differences. I took a few French classes in the past, but when I started a story (fanfiction~) Involving Canada, none of that knowledge mattered. Canada's french is completely different.
@SaiAnbuNe Thank you so much, haha! And don't worry; there is no difference between our written French; the difference only lies in the speech, and even then, every Québécois can speak international French, it's just that we have our accent and we have our little particularities when we talk among ourselves. hehe~
I actually find u really interesting, because... I've noticed that a majority of the americans (inhabitants of the americas) are basically monolingual xDDDD ex. brazilians just speak portuguese, mexicans just speak castilian, u.s. americans just english... b-but you!! ;A;
=////.////= emm.... t-this question may be silly but... I was wondering... n.nU a-are your thoughts in french or in english?

@SaiAnbuNe Haha a lot of French-Canadians (about 40%) also speak English very well, if not perfectly.
To answer your question (it's not silly at all, quite cute actually XD) I'm francophone and only learned English later; my thoughts are mostly in French, but since I have lost of English friends and that I go to an English school right now, it often happens that my thoughts will be in English; I'd say it depends on the environment I'm in. n_n
Comme "parkearse"="to park".
Yeah, I totally didn't use what I learned from this video in my presentation on Québec today... Yup. Not me. >.>
It was really awesome, though. I hope you keep doing the occasional Canada video(especially ones like these!) even if you're not still the WC Canada, because I love your videos!
@sopralto817 Thank you so much for your kind comment! I'll try to make more vids soon! I've got some already filmed, but there's the editing left to do and I'm incredibly lazy lol.
Hello from California! Contributions like this make Hetalia such an informative fandom. I love to hear tidbits from different parts of the world. :D
I remember reading in school about how Canadian French came up with its own words for concepts rather than borrowing the foreign word like they do in France.
Japanese does the verb thing too...I read that "makuru" means to eat at McDonald's. XD
Heya ! Thank you for your comment; I'm glad you found it instructive, it means I've reached my goal ! n_~
True ! Although we do borrow foreign expressions/words, in Québec, we indeed tend to create french terms for concepts, especially the new ones. That would be, I think, because of the need to protect the language here, since were are a little island of French in a big sea of English. An example would be e-mail; France kept it like that, while in Québec, the proper word is courriel. n_n
owo Oh wow, so that's how Quebec French works! I always found French to be rather awkward, but now.. Quebec French seems easier to understand [/from what I remember of my French lessons xD] than Paris French! I might just learn that instead xD;;;
LOL. Don't worry, people who live in the Northern USA don't understand people who live in Texas either....or southern states in general, for that matter. >w>;;
@TohruHondachan just as how the rest of the world feel when we have to learn English and some of your teachers are American English Speakers and the others are Australian or from the UK... when I write "color" some teacher would tell me it´s wrong, and if I write "colour" it´s still the same, someone is going to tell you it´s wrong... NOW IMAGINE THE PRONUNCIATION ISSUES. It´s like crazy XD
@CarmenMCS I think for my French speaking so far, it's probably 'cause I learned France French first and that's the kind I focus on. And Canadian-French = pronounciation FAIL on my accout D: xDD
Well, the steryotype lies on Texas lol. Anyways, whatever region of the United States, the English still is different to United Kingdom's. My point was just to give a little idea to anglophones of how different French from Canada might sound compared to French from France. I didn't mean to offend.
@patatevitale I know... I was kidding... The stereotype does lie with texas, but there are alot of mexicans here, so not alot of accent... then again, I live in the south part... Well I love your video anyways!
I love the Swear words segment. When I was listening to the Audio book of " 206 Bones", I kept hearing the use of " tabernacle" used in the Quebec french.
Excellent question ! French does vary in some other provinces and even within regions of Québec (idioms, pronouncitation, etc) but definitely not enough to consider them other versions of French in my opinion. n_n So basically yes, it's pretty much the only version.
But because of school (the French classes that are given) Anglophones and Francophones alike can speak the standard, international French. The French we learn-write is not the same as the one we speak (weird eh ? lol).
(félicitacions, grace à toi jvais me mettre a parler Joual :P)
+1 sub. <3 I like the way you speak English. xD I'm American, but I'm learning French in school. I think it's really interesting how Canada's French compared to France's is kind of like America's English when compared to England's.
Thanks for teaching me something that I didn't know during my 7-8th grade French class. I never really knew about the differences in between you and Francis' French until after watching this. Merci beaucoup and maraming salamat po. :'D
i can't speak french without mixing my filipino with it...and vice versa...xD...great video though! it helped me distinguish the differences between the two xD
lol don't worry, just because we have our own slang, doesn't mean we don't speak the ''standard'' french either lol so don't worry about that. Plus Montreal has more English people than French people XD
You're very welcome ! b(n_n)d but I'm fairly certain that what you learned was standard, international french, because parisian french has lots of expressions and stuff that is not easy to understand for francophones XD
Glad you enjoyed the video ! <3<3 Ça me fait plaisir !
I have a real interest in different languages I find my mother tounge of English to be quite boring and plain so it is very interesting for me to hear about different types of one language. Needless to say, I am from England. Up in the north and up here we pronounce things very differently to standard english and often do not pronounce the letter T at all.
You make a really awesome Canada! I want to cosplay him too, any tips on how I can make the outfit?
Haha ! I'm sorry you didn't enjoy your French classes. I love English (I'd like to teach it later), but this semester I had the worst teacher ever XD it really makes a huge difference... Much to my shame I must confess I didn't make my cosplay myself, I bought it on ebay, so I'm afraid I can't help you u_u... However I did make the goggles myself. If you're interested, I'll send you a detailed tutorial by private message. Thank you very much for your comment !
@patatevitale ah..it's okay my french teacher left the school after having a mental break down. It does make a difference it really sukc s when you get a bad teacher :(
Ah...that's okay and yes I would like it if you could send my a tutorial. What part of Canada are you from?
Ah! Forgive my lack of knowlage of your country but I didn't know that there was a difference between Canadian and French, french! If I am honest I did not enjoy learning french at school since my teacher made my life hell because my older brother called her something very rude......
(I have to split my post into 2 parts because it was to long)
Dankeschön ! Hehe, I'm glad you enjoyed the video ! n_n Indeed accents are very interesting ! My German teacher told us a bit about different accents. At first I was suprised at some of the differences, but then when I look at the differences in French accents... it's not as surprising haha !
"I'm going to Christ you one!" xD I sent this to my friend who is studying to be a French teacher. She laughed at the testicles part and the way you said horses like 'orses. *sigh* Good times.
French is awesome xO! I wish I could speak french. Yea, I'm going to make my friend teach me xD. I'm swedish but I have Canadian relatives :3! Canada reminds me of Sweden.... But the people their are nicer and not as shy ^^'. BUT ther swedish is kinda crappy x3! I don't blame them, my english is, hm hm, not as good as it could be x'D. You make an awesome Canada :3!
Wow ! Thank you very much for your comment hehe~ And from what I can see, your english is very, very good ! Hehe n_~ But I know how you feel, I'm francophone so... english isn't my mother tongue either haha ! Thanks again ! <3
@patatevitale Ooh thanks o3o! Everyone in my class is better than me xD. My Swedish accent is very funny x3. First,(in other videos ofc xD) I didn't notice that english isn't your first language. No problem :3! I love your videos ^,^.
Aww Spanish is such a fine language ! I'm learning it right now at school, but it still is pretty basic.... u_u Hope one day I'll be able to answer your comments in Spanish ! <3
I think I'm learning both in school ... The Canadain way to form a sentence with the France's pronunication (which I suck at T.T). And I have no idea what vocabulary ... If I were to go to a France or Quebec, would anyone understand my messed up French? haha
Hehehe well, to be honest I doubt you're learning both, I'm pretty sure you're learning, like me, a very standard french. If you don't... well that's curious lol. If you gave me examples I'd probably be able to tell you 'which' you are learning. And I'm sure people would be able to understand your french ! <3
I have to show this to my french teacher! A few weeks back we where discussing france french and canadian french xD Thank you for explaining it. Oh, and just wondering, is it true that canadian french actuly say chien-chaud instead of hotdog?
Hehehe~ Glad you enjoyed it ! Hope your teacher will too ! n_n And no, we don't say chien chaud lololol we say hot dog n_~ Although some of us say '' rotteux '' which isn't a real word, but you could translate it as ''burper'' ... ''something that makes you burp'' lol.
I love this video! This will DEFFINATLY come in handy as I learn French (since I'm a visual/audio laerner) :) Thank you SO much! I mean, my French teacher, who has been to Quebec, says that we'd be able to understand what they're saying but now I can tell that we'd have to do a LOT of thinking xDDD Merci beaucoupe!
Haha be careful now, this video is about stereotyped canadian french. I mean... we do speak like that, but we ..er.. also speak 'standard' french. For example, if I were to speak in french to you, I'd definitely use standard french so that you would understand what I say. It's not like the French were learn at school is the one that I explained in the video. The French we learn, is the same as yours or the french from france. Joual is just the dialect we speak between us. n_n
hahahaha Si tu jase avec un français soit qui parle le virlangue ou qui parle comme un dictionnaire.... you might don't understand him XD Je sais, j'en ai faite l'expériance
you didn't talk about the "toute" "boute" "faite" stuff. it's part of our pronunciation XD
Tu as quand même bien l'accent français! haha Chapeau!
Hmm, I wonder what France thinks about Cajun French. o: I can just picture him pointing at Matthew and Alfred claiming that both of them are killing his language. xD (Much like we all know Arthur does to Alfred anyway =p).
Anyway, this video was very informative. <3 I have to say, I've always loved your accent. ^^
This vid was amazing! I love Hetalia so much! I learn French at school but it's so different to Canada's French! I suppose if my French teacher shouts at me for my accent I could always say that I'm speaking joual!! :)
Thank you very much for your comment ! Hehe, yes, our french is quite different, but we use it in casual speech only, the French we learn at school is the same as yours -a standard french- n_n. I hope you like your classes and I hope you'll do well ! n_~
lol that very funny! c'est si drole! moi aussi, j'aime nos accent plus que l'accent de Fransis! ^-^ my accent sounds a bit different then your though. because i am from nova scotia, we sound more... plain... like we almost have no accsent XD
Je ne parle pas francais bien. (is that even correct?)
I've taken French in school for 4 years, I actually understood what you said on the phone. My French sounds really bad, because I have a Boston accent (You know, Pahk the cah in hahvahd yahd?)
Oh gosh XD this is going to help me in French class somehow. I just know it.
If my teacher says I pronounced a word wrong, I'll just say "It's a Canadian accent!"

Is Quebec French the only version of French that spoken in Canada or does it varies by different places in Canada?
fleetingbynight 1 year ago
Excellent question ! French does vary in some other provinces and even within regions of Québec (idioms, pronouncitation, etc) but definitely not enough to consider them other versions of French in my opinion. n_n So basically yes, it's pretty much the only version.
But because of school (the French classes that are given) Anglophones and Francophones alike can speak the standard, international French. The French we learn-write is not the same as the one we speak (weird eh ? lol).

+1 sub. <3 I like the way you speak English. xD I'm American, but I'm learning French in school. I think it's really interesting how Canada's French compared to France's is kind of like America's English when compared to England's.

patatevitale 1 year ago
clemclemy 1 year ago
Merci beaucoup ! C8 <3

Then those French phrases that I learned for when I go to Montreal this summer might not be of any help at all...
Maybe I can find someone who speaks Japanese if not English...
I'm scared to go now XD
I can hear it now! "Stupid American Girl!"
But I heard people from Quebec like Michiganders, right??????
*hopeful*

lol don't worry, just because we have our own slang, doesn't mean we don't speak the ''standard'' french either lol so don't worry about that. Plus Montreal has more English people than French people XD

@patatevitale Oh, thank god.

You're very welcome ! b(n_n)d but I'm fairly certain that what you learned was standard, international french, because parisian french has lots of expressions and stuff that is not easy to understand for francophones XD

(Part 2 of my response)
I have a real interest in different languages I find my mother tounge of English to be quite boring and plain so it is very interesting for me to hear about different types of one language. Needless to say, I am from England. Up in the north and up here we pronounce things very differently to standard english and often do not pronounce the letter T at all.
You make a really awesome Canada! I want to cosplay him too, any tips on how I can make the outfit?
blueblood1d2 1 year ago

@patatevitale THANKS :)
blueblood1d2 1 year ago
Ah! Forgive my lack of knowlage of your country but I didn't know that there was a difference between Canadian and French, french! If I am honest I did not enjoy learning french at school since my teacher made my life hell because my older brother called her something very rude......
(I have to split my post into 2 parts because it was to long)
blueblood1d2 1 year ago
Dankeschön ! Hehe, I'm glad you enjoyed the video ! n_n Indeed accents are very interesting ! My German teacher told us a bit about different accents. At first I was suprised at some of the differences, but then when I look at the differences in French accents... it's not as surprising haha !

I think I'm learning both in school ... The Canadain way to form a sentence with the France's pronunication (which I suck at T.T). And I have no idea what vocabulary ... If I were to go to a France or Quebec, would anyone understand my messed up French? haha
Huddy22009 1 year ago
Hehehe well, to be honest I doubt you're learning both, I'm pretty sure you're learning, like me, a very standard french. If you don't... well that's curious lol. If you gave me examples I'd probably be able to tell you 'which' you are learning. And I'm sure people would be able to understand your french ! <3
Good luck with those classes !

I have to show this to my french teacher! A few weeks back we where discussing france french and canadian french xD Thank you for explaining it. Oh, and just wondering, is it true that canadian french actuly say chien-chaud instead of hotdog?
KowaiiDoll 1 year ago
Hehehe~ Glad you enjoyed it ! Hope your teacher will too ! n_n And no, we don't say chien chaud lololol we say hot dog n_~ Although some of us say '' rotteux '' which isn't a real word, but you could translate it as ''burper'' ... ''something that makes you burp'' lol.
patatevitale 1 year ago
I love this video! This will DEFFINATLY come in handy as I learn French (since I'm a visual/audio laerner) :) Thank you SO much! I mean, my French teacher, who has been to Quebec, says that we'd be able to understand what they're saying but now I can tell that we'd have to do a LOT of thinking xDDD Merci beaucoupe!
hypersasuke17 1 year ago
Haha be careful now, this video is about stereotyped canadian french. I mean... we do speak like that, but we ..er.. also speak 'standard' french. For example, if I were to speak in french to you, I'd definitely use standard french so that you would understand what I say. It's not like the French were learn at school is the one that I explained in the video. The French we learn, is the same as yours or the french from france. Joual is just the dialect we speak between us. n_n
patatevitale 1 year ago
hahahaha Si tu jase avec un français soit qui parle le virlangue ou qui parle comme un dictionnaire.... you might don't understand him XD Je sais, j'en ai faite l'expériance
you didn't talk about the "toute" "boute" "faite" stuff. it's part of our pronunciation XD
