Allen made a very convincing transistor electronic theater organ too. If you listen to Brad Swanson - tunes like Ally Cat , Mame etc. from the Album ' The Whispering Sounds of Brad Swanson' on Thunderbird records, this is an Allen electronic theater organ. It's as theater as theater gets without being theater, & still not enough theater for some. 1 gets the theater bug in them and can only listen to real pipe organs? Sad that many will never experience the beauty of oscillators due to Hauptwerk.
What does make an organ "a real organ"? I think it is the console with pedals so you play the literature written for the organ. And if you are a millionaire may buy a PIPES ORGAN, if not, the best option is an a ALLEN DIGITAL ORGAN.
ahhh the almost repetive phrase: " the allen will never be a real pipe organ..." yes, at least not the digital ones, but do not ignore the real pipe organs allen also manufactures.....
Clarification: Best among digital instruments. Real pipes are expensive, take up much space, require perfect accoustics, and lots of maintenance. Allen is the best among substitutes for those of us lacking prerequisites for real pipes. I love the REAL organ at St. Sulpice, but cannot afford to buy one.
I would argue with you that Allen is not the best of the digi builders, that distinction goest to the firms of Marshall & Ogeltree and Walker, but of the "mass production" digi builders, yes, Allen is probably the best.
Hmmm... mass produced.. I would hardly call Allen a mass producer of organs. Even though Allen has "stock" models, they are all handmade. I have a pipe/digital combo allen at my church. The dang digital sounds far better than the pipes and I have great Moller Pipe work too. The allen organ quality is determined by the voicer, the installer and the room.
I still can't believe all the argument over whose organ imitation is better...
It's not the existence of organ imitations that bothers me, but the idea that an imitation is as good or better than the real thing, which is so obviously the point of this piece. It's just not true!
rodger= allen ;) but. they are one of the greatest instruments.
And all the people who will say, that this instruments are not nice... I say to them: It is better to play on a digital organ, then on a ripped old churchorgan with te sound of a squirrel!
I think this video may be false. I always heard that Rodgers, Inc. was the largest builder of digital organs in the world. Rodgers is a much better choice than Allen anyway.
Nope. Allen holds the record for the largest builder of digital organs in the world. Rodgers only holds the biggest builder of Stereo Imaged organs in the world. Yes they may have the look, but they don't have the sound!
Allens are much better sound quiality than rodgers. i used to think that rodgers were better than allens, but after comparing the two i found allens much better. Rodgers are very good value though.
I have played an Allen for 5 years and I have great respect for the builder this instrument. For about the price of a 5-rank pipe organ, we have a digital instrument with 35 ranks plus a MIDI box with 100 more voices, including a marvelous pallette of authentic reeds. The "Virtual Accoustics" make a dead sanctuary come to sparkling life. And those normally pesky mixtures never, ever go out of tune! Allen Organs are real organs and are simply the best.
35 ranks? Ranks of what? Pipes? Authentic reeds? Where are they? And pesky mixtures? Some organ builders use permanently tuned pipes (cone tuned). And one of the reasons digital organs sound so fake is because real instruments are never perfectly in tune. Allen organs might be real, but they will never be pipe organs!
i would rather play a digital organ than a pipe. i don't like the out-of-tuneness of pipe organs...and i don't like how some notes are louder than others within the same stop. most pipes iv played i had to pull out almost every stop in order to carry the congregation..once the swell pedals are wide open ur done..there's nowhere else to go. w/ digital i have alot more control of volume. plus if you have a carpeted church and a pipe organ..you're stuck w/ dead sound and there's nothing you can do

I cannot appreciate Allen or anything they do. They do not build Organs. They build a console-shaped object that is supposed to approximate the sound of an organ.
Give me a break. Yea, it's not a pipe organ, but Allen's digital technology provides the next best thing for those individuals and/or organizations that can't accommodate a pipe organ.

On oscilloscopes, you are right. An oscilloscope is used to display a waveform. They never make sounds.
No one puts an oscilloscope in an organ - be it pipe or digital.
By the way, new digital organs don't use oscillators to produce sounds anymore.

No. There is NO oscilliscope thats good enough to re-create the real thing.
NEVER

Yhea...an "oscilloscope" can never re-create the usually faulty reed stops and the untuned state of pipes organ in most churches.

Uhm...not once do they actually mention the fact that this thing is generally almost entirely digital.
...Unfortunately, most of us have neither the space nor the money for that Casavant we've always wanted. :D

The sound of real wind blown pipe is also determined by the organ voicer, organ tuner and the room acoustics.

I agree with afdcomposer. This video is a waste of youtube server space. I don't understand why people choose fake imitations over the real thing.

If a pipe instrument is properly voiced and tuned this is not a problem.
