  • @guitarboya7x. I have an OCD v4 and I use it to boost gain on my jcm800 and I prefer it over a ibanez tube screamer any day. And I don't mean the cheaper tube screamer either.

  • Both are very good. For $40, I'll take the Cool Cat, however.

  • I don't think it's really a case of which is "better," just which is more pleasing to the listeners ears. Everyone likes different things from an overdrive pedal. I found that in certain situations live the OCD doesn't cut through, where the Cool Cat is a surefire winner. You can get closer to the OCD sound however by adjusting the dip switches inside the Cool Cat. A lot of people presume cheaper pedals are of poorer quality. In some cases this is not so. Cool Cats are extremely roadworthy.

  • don't need to say anything about the OCD, but would the cool cat survive in a band environment or heaven forbid on stage?

  • BAHHH !!! IS THE SAME!! C´MON, LET¨´S GIVE DANELECTRO A CHANCE. LET´S BE HONEST : DO YOU THINK THE AUDIENCE WOULD FEEL ANY DIFERENCE? PROBABLY THE ONLY GEEK IS GOING TO BE YOU AND YOU " SUPER SOFT DELICIOUS EAR", BULSHIT!!!! JUST PLAY GOOD WITH THAT ROCK N ROLL SOUL AND A HIGH DOSE OF TESTOSTERONE, THE REST IS HISTORY. OF COURSE THEY AREN´T THE SAME, HELLO? BUT, THEY SOUNDS REALLY REALLY SIMILAR, SO, IF YOU WANT TO PAY 150$ OR 40$ FOR A RIDICIULOUS DIFFERENCE, ITS YOUR MONEY DUDE.

  • @renatoufo But if money wasn't a problem, why wouldn't you buy the one you preferred? It's the same as if you said to me: Why did you buy that Fender Strat, it's not 10x better than a $100 starter pack guitar? No it's not but you pay for the feel and sound. I think you should be almost 100% happy with the product and after that buy it. And compare it to as many other products as you can. And again: if money isn't a problem, why not?

Danelectro is a bit too harsh sounding to my taste.

  • i've got the cool cat and as you can tell by the video its more trebly. Sure you can cut some treble with the tone pot, but it gets a bit muddy. Also the ocd has more bass.

  • Got my Cool Cat CO-1 version one up on ebay right now. Item number 300596302562

  • its all personal preference of course, but IMO the ocd is better. i find that live it really sings. lower volume stuff doesn't really give it the opportunity to shine. the cat drive sounds a bit digital to me

  • no contest - the OCD is MUCH better, you can even tell on a youtube video, more natural and not as harsh. that's what why you pay extra.

  • Cool Cat has more fuzz- a normal thing for cheap pedals.

  • I like to Cool Cat... Sounds more Raw and Choatic....

  • I have the Dano (found it sitting in a display at a store, the guy had no idea what it was...$30). Was about to get an OCD when I heard about it. Have done 4 gigs with. Using it as a solo boost after my BB Preamp. Does the job, sounds great, feels solid. The case is metal, if anyone is wondering. The switch is not my favorite style, as I try not to "stomp" my pedals, but it works fine. A great overdrive pedal for cheap money.

  • are these pedals good for tube amps like the tiny terror for giving it extra gain boos or just clean amps?

  • I stopped watching the video about halfway through and i lost track of which was which. You're completely right, they dont sound the same BUT they both sure do sound great. It's a steal at 25 bucks.

  • Looks like two US bros need to find a little love shack.

  • Are those amazing boots made in the USA ?

  • "Would you tell Picasso to sell his guitars?"

  • I like gearmanndude's reviews, I am new to guitar and find them very 'friendly' toward the inexperienced, however I wish to make more experimental/ambient music with guitar, so while I wish to use different pedals I really can't rely on his guitar playing style to give me the full effect of the equipment. Simply put, his reliance on playing a 'genre' tailored by the use of each pedal makes my view of them difficult.

  • @KingOfUm he mostly does overdrive/gain pedals, it's more difficult to review ambient style pedals

  • Excellent Review, i buy my Drive1 thanks to your videos, Rock ON!!!!

  • The OCD has more of a vintage sound, but they definitely sound similar.

  • IMO, OCD sounded better on chord, the cool cat was okay for pickin though

  • Cool Cat has a little more fizz. The OCD sounds a bit fatter to me. I would buy the OCD. However if you are on a budget, go with the Cool Cat. Does anyone know where the Danelectro pedals are built? The Fulltone ones are hand built in the USA.

  • @spyguys does it really matter? almost everything these days is from some sort of low wage country...build the dano in USA and the price will go up no matter what due to wages...

  • @Swagz1981 Yes, to me it does matter. As a citizen of the USA I think it's important to support USA based companies whenever possible. When our economy and employment situation is so bad here, it does not help when we purchase Chinese made products. I saw a shirt for sale the other day and it was made in Pakistan. Why would I want to support the economy of Pakistan. Danelectro used to be a USA based company at one time and they were inexepensive then too.

  • @spyguys i can relate to that being as i work in the manufacturing industry myself....the main thing is consumer demand...everyone wants things to be cheaper and were not content when moneys tight cause products are always going up in price...necessity is the mother of invention and if its necessary to save some $ you better believe most ppl will take the cheaper route...most big name companies produce guitars in Asia as it pays the bills...fender, gibson, etc etc...thats business

  • @Swagz1981 Sad but true....more and more products are not made in this country. I own four USA made Fenders and two Gibsons. My newer Fender amps were made in Arizona and my effects pedals are from CA and NY. I even drive a Buick which has turned out to be the most reliable car I have ever owned. I do have a big Sony TV which I think is from Japan. Many people go the less expensive route and I understand that. I just feel better doing my small part to support American manufacturing.

  • @spyguys Makes sense to me...the only thing i think many need to understand is that we need these countries that make affordable products, shirts for example...how many products does walmart, best buy, Kmart, target actually sell that come from USA? not many if any at all...these are huge USA corporations that employ a huge population of americans...these stores are designed for the budget savvy consumer, which is most ppl...

  • @spyguys another thing to consider is most products like your 'american made' amps, cars, guitars etc are not 100% american manufactured product...u better believe that the materials are not 100% american nor are all the parts...it only takes a certain % of the product to be considered american...open your amp and see where all the components are made...im betting not 100% USA...i bought a drill as it was made in USA...the switch fails...guess what, China!

  • @spyguys the other thing is that shirt you seen in the store from Pakistan...what store was it? i bet it was a USA based company selling overseas products...your cell phone isnt made in the US...your big TV isnt either...everyone buys asian products to some degree and i respect your support for local economy but if your not buying that Pakistan shirt, that US based company may go out of business as they cannot afford to sell higher end, US products....

  • @Swagz1981 I try to buy things made in the USA whenever I can. Of course there are times when I will purchase a foreign made product just like most everyone else does. I just like to support American manufacturing whenever possible, especially when I buy guitars, effects, amps, clothing, food, cars etc. I draw the line on things from Pakistan for political reasons. I will buy a shirt made in the USA from the same store even if it is a few dollars more.

  • @spyguys china town

  • OCD sounds better...but not $100 better...

  • My question is how does the Cool Cat react when the guitar volume is turned down compared to the OCD? I tried the Cool Cat once and it didn't quite make it. I have both versions 3 and 4 of the OCD and prefer them to most other overdrives, even though the versions are slightly different.

  • damn that cool cat actually sounds pretty killer. fact of the matter is though if you are going for a pedal that will perform every time you need it too without crapping out on you at a critical time (the only time equipment ever fails haha) put down the extra cash for the ocd they are built like tanks. granted i have never had a danelectro pedal but thats because every one ive had a chance to use felt like it was going to bust if i stomped on it.

  • @bbbbbum Now you have it! You are right. Better pay more and go for reliability.

  • LOL virgin 1...and she's dirty! ;)

  • imo the cc sounds thinner and harsher and if you can hear that over utube than it's significant

  • that cool cat sounds so nasty

  • I think the OCD honestly sounds a little fuller, but not that much. I still prefer the sound of the OCD but the dan is close enough for the price.

  • i want the danelectro to win, but its really harsh and noisy while the ocd stays nice, smooth, clear, and creamy

  • @nymetsrock there are little dip switches in the danelectro that can make it also smooth and creamy ;)

  • @tomiclav Where are these dipswitches located? Do they correspond to the LP/HP settings on the OCD? I always like the LP OCD setting (creamier like you said) but was under the impression that the Dano was permanently set to HP. (I stupidly sold my OCD and recently picked up a Dano to replace it--waiting for it to come from an ebay seller).

  • @modalmood the switches are located in the battery compartment, one is a Lo-fi switch and the other is input sensitivity control.

  • OCD All the fucking way

  • hey bohs 1984.....i see where you're getting at but believe me i am a pro guitarist and sound engineer and i do not suffer from placebo... even at my modest home pc setup with logitech speakers there is BIG difference between the pedals in this review and it is very clear that the ocd comes out on top of the danelectro... the cool cat sounds tinny and pourly defined in comparison...... it is the truth here at my end - take it or leave it.....peace :-)

  • I can barely hear the difference in these two. Good job with the demo! Nice playing too. Thanks!

  • If the Danelectro Drive were set with a bit less treble it would probably sound 99% like the OCD. By the way, there's something I think it's pretty funny... people complain about "cloned pedals" and cloned circuits, but nobody complains about Fender copies (you know them, Nash, K-Line, King Bee etc etc etc) - hipocrites! :)

  • the Danelectro is just to fizzy in this video for my likings..

But its harder to tell in the lead segments, mostly obvious when playing chords.

    Otherwise, still very similar.

  • @Doddus

It's that way in real life, too, at least w/ my rig.

  • the ocd is better, but not 400% better.

  • @scorpia616 It sounds better and has better parts, better housing and probably a better warranty than danelectro stuff

  • @Noseheros doesnt justify that MASSIVE price tag.

  • @scorpia616 If ur that poor lol $135 aint really massive, a 300 dollar drive is massive

  • am I relly the only person who honestly thinks the ocd sounds way better than the cool cat? are U alle deaf?

  • @exowax I couldnt agree more

  • @exowax No, your not but you are suffering from the placebo effect. You CANNOT tell the difference here. Between the low resolution recording, then the lower resolution transfer up to Youtube and the limitations of whatever your playing it back through; well you get the idea. If you were in the room you would probably hear a SLIGHT difference, maybe. I bet if you took the guts out of the Dano and put it in hand painted box you could sell it for $300 and nobody would know if they didn't look.

  • Am I the only person who thinks this guy sounds like Jack Black?

  • @haydenjohnoleary No, at least half of the people that have commented on every one of GMD's hundreds of videos have said it.

  • Is this Jack Black?!

  • Comment removed

  • definetly thought you were gonna rock some lenny Kravits at 2:51

  • man it is almost the same =OOOO

  • fulltone has more mids I like it better but the danoelectro is amazing for the price

  • i hear more mid with the ocd.

  • Thanks...for the demo gearmanndude.....I appreciate it very much...before I would turn my nose up at danelectro...thought it cheap crap.....the cool cat drive is a helluva OD pedal.

  • just put the coolcat in a nice metal housing and it is awesome :D!!!!

I hear a slight difference, but as said before: in my band you won't hear any difference I think :D!

  • Who is selling the cool cat drive for $24...everywhere I look they cost $45 plus shipping...don't tell me they have doubled in price?

  • @Nordland796 your exactly right. i just ordered mine for 40. still better than finding a version 1 OCD though

  • @thmsrojo I bought my cool cat drive ver 1 off ebay $39 it sounds awesome

  • @Nordland796 haha awesome! im still waiting for mine to come in. I cant wait.

  • @thmsrojo You will luv it.....gives your amp bulls balls

  • @Nordland796

Yeah, the price went up. They actually changed the circuit a bit as well. Rumor has it the circuit was too similar to the patented fulltone so they had to change it.

  • @snorockerlp360

Er, very very few stompbox circuits are patented as few are genuinely new ideas....the OCD is a modified Voodoolabs OD....

  • @snorockerlp360 you can not patent an electronic circut - that is why Marshall was able to steal fenders amp design and everyone has copied mesa boogies.

  • That Cool Cat sounds pretty good!

  • I think I would rather get the Dano, even if they were the same price, because, more gain, more aggressiveness, it's just a great drive!

  • not a big difference, really, unless you're overly anal

  • the ocd sound SO much better. you guys must not have ears.

  • @joeydoit1423 Agreed. The Danelectro sounds fizzy, sterile, and weak. It's actually painful to listen to. The OCD has major balls without being harsh, a more complex harmonic signature and doesn't overly impose itself on the guitar's natural tone.

  • For sure if you listen closely enough the OCD sounds a lot better. The Cool Cat is more on the brittle side.

  • dude this guy has like every pedal

  • @nuwc2013 i bet kingbee guitars and the other website he posts on the info gives him free stuff for him to have and demo so people with buy them

  • This was closer then I thought! Wow.

I own a V4 and love the damn thing. I'd have to say you hear a bit more body to the OCD in the vid....or you can say the Cool Cat has a bit more snot....it really is about your taste/preferences.

For the extra cash you save, prob buy a compressor(like someone below mentioned) or like, THREE more other pedals and you can have a helluva lot of options.

I'm still keeping my OCD -->Keeley BD2 set up though...that sh*t is the NUTS :)

  • It will all depend on whatever else you use it with, either one would be good to have but it is easier to look around and see exactly what people are doing with their OCD. After a while 100 people with the Dano and some amp or Line 6 setting will sound better than all the dudes with the OCDs. I noticed that the Dano is finicky about how you play, losing dynamics during softer parts. Throw a compressor in front of it or an overdrive pedal just for more signal and it may sound great.

  • altho both similar, the fulltone is silkier and the danelectro is a little edgy-harsher on it's coloration of the tine .. both decent. the dan actually has more distortion ..thanks for the great demo.

  • I have the v2 of this Danelectro overdrive for sale if someone wants it.

  • jack black

  • I go for cool cat!! When battery runs out, you just buy a new pedal! XD

  • goddamn man..youve got some sweet gear.

  • I prefer the OCD, and since this is the oldest model of 4, I'm sure the newest OCD has been redone to work these problems out, and OCD also has the LP and HP switches for a l=cleaner driver and a harder one...but you get what you pay for

  • COOL CAT DRIVE - sounds slightly louder, brighter, and compressed

FULLTONE OCD - sounds warmer but very transparent

*like always, it depends on what other gear you're using, how all of your gear complements/works against each other, what sound you're looking for, how it feels, and what you're willing to pay.

  • Dano one sounds better to me although sometimes i could the strings being picked but w/ the OCD i did not hear that. the OCD also seems a lot cleaner. if i wanted an overdrive like that it would be hard to spend the extra money although Dano ethically has some major issues they have to deal with before i would resume buying pedals from them.

  • @lesscunning whaaaaaaaatt??

  • Damn it!! its this guy again!!

  • It's kinda cool how the Dano has the controls where you can't accidentally kick them. I have an Ibanez LoFi pedal and the knobs sink down into the pedal so you can't kick them either. I wish more pedal makers did that simple feature.

  • The OCD is a bit bassy for me specially when its gain knob is up, but not the cool cat meoww hahahaha :)

  • yep - I had an ocd which was great, but it gets REAL bassy when the gain is up...

  • I think the Danelectro has more of a stronger sound. But the OCD is old .......

  • ocd hands down

  • Epiphone made awesome unique guitars back in the day, like the Wilshire.

  • I think the Full tone Full Drive 2 and the Boss Super Overdrive are very good overdrive pedals. I don't really care for Ibanez no matter how popular it is. If your looking for TUBE overdrive you prolly want something like the Ibanez, maxon(like the Epiphone of Ibanez)lol I'm getting the Full Drive 2 because it's got straight up crunchy drive sounds and tube sound so its great, the "ocd" isnt so bad,

    p.s. I hate Digitech's "Bad Monkey" it's horrible! Don't get it!

  • Maxon, the Epiphone of Ibañez? loool Maxon was already in the scene before Ibañez, Ibañez is just the name under wich Maxon sells the pedals outside Japan. They are exactly the same.

  • Epiphone was also on the scene, when Gibson made it their second brand...

  • So? Maxon is not the "Epiphone of Ibañez", the pedals are exactly the same, they only have different names because de name Maxon can't be used outside Japan. Gibson and Epiphone have nothing to do with this.

  • @nmiguelsimoes (este gajo percebe tanto disto como eu de chines)

  • I almost find it funny that people actual think these pedals are even similar scroll away from the video and 98% of the time it is obvious which is which and the ocd is better in every instance. Much more harmonic content, the overtones are was richer in the ocd the cool cat is a cheap copy. Now if on a budget the cool cat is a good option but its not even in the same class as fulltone pedals.

  • Actually, I did scroll away from the video in both instances. Personally, I preferred the Danelectro. The OCD a bit muddier, IMHO. Purely subjective, I guess. Sure, Fulltone pedals are sturdier, but to what extent?

  • I like the Danelectro best.

  • The OCD sounds a bit mellower. The cool cat hos more bite

  • whoa wtf, why is jack black demoing pedals and not telling us?

  • It's funny how GMD clearly states that there is an obvious difference and that the Danelectro is not a perfect copy of the OCD. And yet there are a ton of people freaking out about how the Danelectro is better. Kinda jumping the gun folks. There is a reason that the OCD is more expensive.

  • gearmandude you legend

  • It's 24 dollars against 135 dollars. 95% of the time, they shound exactly alike. I think it's a no-brainer.

  • the cool cat is a little sharper. stupid comment because you barely can't hear it. (what's the english saying, when some one is talking about details that doesn't matter)

  • @Ufig they may soudn the same but the components are a major part of Fulltone, they have quality stuff compared to the cool cat series (which is great for what it is), but the OCD will have less problems internally and last longer

  • @Ufig It is a no-brainer. Buy the OCD!

  • maybe with the bright sounding tele..., i find the OCD kills it in this video. the V4 and les paul was a little closer, but i still find the dano sounds more digital. i looked away from the screen when you first played both, and figured out which one was the dano after a couple of seconds. sounds less rich and full to me.

  • ya with i les paul i prefer the danelectro but fulltones better with fenders

  • lol 1:54. I didnt know the switch button could be dialed in :D

  • Lol this guy sound like Jack black

  • I bought a cool cat drive as a stand in for the ocd while I saved up the money. Please do NOT buy the cool cat. I wouldn't say it sucked but at high volumes It will boost all that unwanted noise and thin your tone. I play blues/ rock and use the ocd in conjunction with a fulltone 70 fuzz and a fender vibro amp and the cool cat in place of the ocd gave me so much hell in small venues.

  • Comment removed

  • um paul...the Cool Cat is full metal and its true bypass...

  • stooopidd.

  • Oh wow I feel dumb. I thought it was plastic because of the FAB pedal series Dano puts out. They are the same shape and plastic.

  • i like your boots

  • I love the way you adjusted the stomp switch on the OCD at about 1:57. hahahaha! You rock.

  • wow..thanx for the post! to my ears Dano has fatter tone! :) and the fact that it has true bypass! it makes all the diff for me..

  • Bottom line--you put drums & bass over this shit and you're not going to hear ANY difference

  • @themoveschicago - Ain't that the truth. Furthermore, I'll bet anyone $1000 that if you told people you recorded a track with the OCD and it was actually the Cool Cat all along, they'd all be saying, "Oh hell yeah. OCD rocks!" Wouldn't have a damn clue. LOL!

LOL!

  • This guy sounds just like Jack Black

  • They both sound great but the Dano sounds a little thinner to my ears (albeit I am listening through ear buds on my PC so I have that going against me.) It might just be a bit brighter, its hard to tell. Either way, for the money, that is a decent sounding pedal. Thanks GMD!

  • I'm listening through studio monitors and I hear the same thing...the Dano definitely comes through as being thinner in this demo...probably because the OCD adds a little bit of low end to the tone whereas the Dano doesn't.

All things considered, I'd rather have an OCD. It's just a better constructed pedal and I prefer the fatter tone.

  • You do realize that putting shit audio through "studio monitors" is going to give you "clear shit audio"...... its youtube, you only get a general idea... especially off of camera recorded demos.

  • You've clearly inspired at least a 1000 people to buy the cool cat drive including me now as I nearly went for OCD but was always too expensive, You sure your not working for danelectro? :)

  • What part of America do you you come from I want that accent

  • the OCD has abit more 'quality' to its tone, but considering the price of the Dano Cool Cat Drive pedal, it's a GREAT showing. There's certainly NOT a hundred dollars(or whatever) difference in tone!

  • The OCD seemed to have more mid range, as the Dano had more treble. It's very close!!! Is Dano a copy cat? Like a Kia, same car for half the price?

  • wow the danelectro sounds great.

    i really want a danelectro U2 guitar.

  • danelectro's loud, I think it's a good deal it's a 25 dollar pedal up against a 120 dollar one. I think the OCD carries low to mid tones with less mud in the EQwise.. (just from playing them in person),.. they sound pretty close on Utube

  • GMD I'm LOVING the AC/DC

    Rock On!!!

  • Yep - just saw another Drive demo, and it starts to get buzzy dramatically after 9:00 on the dial. 8-9 seem to be the sweet spot. Since I couldn't imagine needing any more treble past that point, I think that would level the playing field. I.E. set the tone to 8-9 on the Drive, and then adjust the OCD to match it. So for 25 beans you get tone control with a narrow sweet spot, but a small concession, IMO.

  • I think they do sound the same, with the difference being that the OCD is rolling off some more high end. Since the Drive doesn't have the LP/HP switch, I'd be willing to bet that you could make them both sound the same (or VERY close) with some tone control adjustments on each. Honestly, the only difference I hear is in the top end.

  • I have both, OCD is more amplike, Drive sounds more transistorish..

  • Woah, $25? That's crazy cheap.

That's what I get for leaving comments before the video is over.

  • I really like the Fulltone OCD, in all versions. It sounds a bit creamier while the Dano sounds kind of buzzy... though I'm sure the Dano is much cheaper and is pretty good for the money.

  • Great review! I just ordered a Cool Cat Drive based on your comparison tests.

BTW, you sound like Jack Black.
