I'm not sure where you get your information from but all I can tell you is that it is completely inacurate. Having been in the military I can tell you this: if you leave the military (whether there is an ongoing war or not) without permission you are considered awol. If you receive orders to go to combat and refuse to do so, you can be charged with insubordination aka disobeying a direct order from a superior. Either way you will be charged court martialed and given dishonorable discharge.

If your SGT gives you an unlawful order to kill an unarmed civilian, then you are in no way obligated to carry out said order under the Uniform Code of Military Justice. There are many ways a unit commander can pressure someone to keep his/her mouth shut about illegal activities, but goin AWOL only gives the chain of command a leg to stand on when they claim that you were a dirtbag soldier during your court marshal.
