One thing I love about Donald Fagen (and Walter Becker) is that he thinks outside the box: "Any world that I'm welcome to"...." and "Any matter world that falls apart surely comes together again--any Major Dude will tell you." Priceless lyrics. You just don't find this anywhere else in the music world. The guy is just amazing.
@MrAmericanaSam ALWAYS is cool (but it's a maxi pad)..I'm not religious but outside of the Vatican I think, a new sculpture; the earth; rotating...as though a greater intelligence from within the present earth jus a shell: metamorphosis?..16 trillion it's deficit the USA I would NOT. EVER. receive ANY gifts from "that" train wreck headed for a One World Major Catastrophe!...smiling boy presidents!
You certainly did do it justice, it's an excellent fan video. I grew up with this song in the 70s, my dad was a Dan fan. Right back from the age of 4 or 5 I identified with these lyrics. I imagined voluntarily leaving this word for a better one... and I still do.
nice illustration on the video jorlev150 - considering that Fagan recorded that song in 1975 - its been 36 long years since then, but he's still lives there.
I think you did a FANTASTIC job on the video. I enjoyed it very much. Do not listen to naysayers who have never made a video or uploaded "anything", but follow your vision, which you did. Good job!
The guy from the Clash said: You're only as good as your drummer. In this case the drummer was the legendary Hal Blaine (Pet Sounds, Good Vibrations, etc...) so there you go.
i actually appreciate the literal videos as well as the nebulous ones. after all, it's just one person's interpretation of the song. we all interpret things differently.
I think of atom bombs, when I hear this... The message in the words of this song evokes all kinds of images, those we don't want and those we do. The contrast is what contributes to the richness of this song. :-)
do we relly think of atom bombs when we listen to this track. i love this music. never think of war and horrible things we do to each other when i listen to Steelydan. i find this music uplifting.
do we relly think of atom bombs when we listen to this track. i love this music. never think of war and horrible things we do to each other when i listen to Steelydan. i find this uplifting.
@agapefriend04 I read somewhere that Donald was always a little self-conscious about his appearance and this insecurity manifested itself in some of his lyrics (Fire in the hole) I don't think he'd be half the genius he is without a bit of the introspection caused by insecurity. I don't think he's given up, he's just looking in the wrong places. I can only hope that he gives the glory for his supreme musicianship back to God and finds solace.
Steely Dan is just not meant for music videos, with VERY few exceptions. Whenever someone tries to create a video montage for a Steely Dan song, I just listen to the song.
These are my tunes, bitch. And you're not going to put your own spin on them.
...thoroughly enjoyed your video. Absolutely love the song, and believe you did it justice, adding some interesting twists, so that it was like listening to it with you. Tx!
I was just talking about this song and remembering being in Central Park and 5th Ave. I come to youtube and here it is set to one of my favorite Steely Dan songs.
Thanks for this video and song. I've listened to this song literally thousands of times since I was in high school in the 70s. I'm a DanFan tried and true.
I Like the way the content of the video is connected to the music and lyrics. It creates a powerful message that way.
Please continue to express your creative inclination about what we need to learn and do to develop our personal and collective consciousness and build a better world that we are all welcome to.
"Katy Lied" was, in my humble opinion, Steely Dan's best album. I dug every song on the album, but this and "Black Friday" were incredible. Donald Fagan's voice conveyes so much, and the music is obviously beautifully conceived and executed. By the way, nice video, and thanks for posting it!
Good job, but can I offer some constructive criticism? Sometimes it's better if the images reflect the mood of the music rather than the literal meaning of the lyrics. A little ambiguity is good.
It starts to distract from the music if I'm paying attention to how each scene matches the lyrics, no matter how clever the fit is. It's like "Oh look, and there's a hand reaching out", and then the idea of a hand reaching out gets separated from its lyrical context.
@FatDave2112 Yes Dave a little ambiguity is good no doubt about it! Like being capable of doing two things at once. For example: Watching a nice video by an amateur who should be thanked for making this an interesting experience for us all AND listening to the music at the very same time.
What you've described seems somewhat like ADD. "Oh look there's a hand reaching out !" and now by God! I'm thrown off lyrical content track! Make sense?... Just offering some "constructive criticism" Dave.
@FatDave2112 LOL ""Then again maybe I'm full of shit.""" I found the criticism imformative...I like the video..... and I found the last line funny....Steely Dan would aprove,,,,, ;) Peace to All.....
@FatDave2112 There is great power in ambiguity and your constructive criticism was very reasonable and polite. The job done was good. Maybe this artist is a masterpiece in progress. We will see but this work was a good start.
