"Two Ton" Tony Gallento and Tami Mauiello were former ex heavyweight boxers in this film. Gallento was a former bouncer who got a shot at Joe Louis in the forties and talked alot of trash before getting his block knocked off by Joe. My favorite line in the movie is the one given to the fighters, DEFFFFINATLY!
In this scene, where Karl Malden is hit in the head with a can that draws blood and you see his reaction,....that is ALL REAL. It hit in the head by accident of course, but they kept the scene in the movie.
Karl Malden has been a favorite of mine when I first saw him in On the Waterfront as a kid. His rightful righteousness was sooo great. The pragmatic priest, a character that no longer exists in our representations. Does it still exist in our reality?
I hope so. Since he died today, at 97, perhaps we can all reflect on this model and reality.
His street confidence of the 30s is an interesting counterbalance to the high confusion and anxiety of Brando's 50's.
Karl Malden! Amazing actor!

An extraordinary monologue. Malden's character was based on a real-life priest who lived and worked on the West Side of Manhattan.

Funny how a movie that's 55 years old becomes more and more relevant to the present day.
