I don't hate the mother, I feel a sublime sense of compassion for her, and even her husband. no matter how wrongly they live, they are humans with feelings and are beautiful, no matter how emotionally castrated they are.

The scene with the bag makes me cry every time I see it, because it's amazing how masterfully they could capture the beauty of that moment. It's probably the greatest moment in film ever made.
