no joke i see what ricky see's sometimes i can see the beauty most fail to see sometimes i look at the clouds and just see things i cant understand its just like he say's an overwelming feeling that's beyond unexplainable, sometimes theres so much beauty in the world i feel like i can't take it ;)
the beautiful parallels of serenity, peace, freshness, tenderness and then the reality of a married couple who have stayed together for far too long and as most marriages do , wind up with discontent, envy, bitterness, and a need for freedom. i don't think folks should marry young..when you've experienced all their is to taste, then i feel that no matter if your love has gone..destiny will still play it's hand . so why rush?....only time alone will tell..so sometimes you gotta spin that wheel..
I never realised his mother was played by Alison Janney. Without makeup a Donna Karan dress and the whitehouse press briefing room she looks really different.

@Aquasex1987 He is effected by his fathers treatment and sterness. He is in essence a robot to his power. That's why he's 'closed'. And seemingly he is empathic but isn't, just a very emotionally troubled youngster who perceives the world in beauty.
sometimes there's so much beauty in the world I feel like I can't take it and my heart is just gonna cave in... :) the wind played with my hair the other day and I remembered this part of the movie.
@thanggnguyen I mean it is what partially inspired the movie.
Also, just look at it. Such fluidity... It's almost as if it were alive, moving like any living thing. People see the world in so many different ways. Some just chose to appreciate it's beauty, flaws and all.
Something doesn't have to be a masterpiece to contain meaning...
It could simply be the rain falling on a tin roof.
@GozerGozarian I agree with Albarn27. Yes she's a parent, but it doesn't give her the right to do that. This is the 21st century, and we are not so repressed and pathetic that we bow down to our parents.
Where the bad guy (even though there are arguably no bad guys in movies like this) is linked to Nazism demonstrating a collection (obsession) of war relics, such as old guns and other memorabillia.
@fallingfirenze He was freakin tired of living under the mom's watch all the dang time. I would've done the same thing, but I don't blame her for slapping Jane. Jane is a major brat.
@mike002233 The first song is "Call Me Irresponsible" by Bobby Darin - interestingly enough Spacey played Bobby Darin 5 years after this film - then the Laurence Wilkes stuff comes on when he mentions it.
I don't hate the mother, I feel a sublime sense of compassion for her, and even her husband. no matter how wrongly they live, they are humans with feelings and are beautiful, no matter how emotionally castrated they are.
The scene with the bag makes me cry every time I see it, because it's amazing how masterfully they could capture the beauty of that moment. It's probably the greatest moment in film ever made.
The melody played is called 'Any other name' and it's by Thomas Newman, but if you just type in American Beauty on itunes it will come up with the soundtrack, it's the main theme to the movie
