For me I went for these starters through the series,

Blue/Red (can't remember one which I had): Charmander

Yellow: Pikachu obviosly (I wish they'd remake Yellow!)

Silver: Cyndaquil

Crystal: Chikorita

Sapphire: Mudkip

Emerald: Torchic

And when I get Diamond I'll probably get Pochama, the little penguin. Can't say I like it's final form much...

Actually, in Hoenn Treeko was the best. My level 70 Sceptile took on my friend's level 75 Blaziken, with backups (in double battle) of Level 62 Pikachu, and Level 80 Charizard, respectively. I pwned both.
