@Lavacateg That's easy. I've produced a great book/DVD video package with country style violin instruction, called "Fiddling for Beginners." Its available through the mail from my web site at captainfiddledotcom
Thank you very much! i am learning to play fiddle and did not notice my bridge was all wrong until I saw this video and then checked out my fiddle. I got it all sorted out now! Thanks to your video. Best wishes from England :)
@UpcomingJedi A luthier friend of mine tries that, along with other things - removing small slivers of wood from the "wings" or flanges on the bridge, bridge thinning, etc. He finds that alterations help some violins, but can detract from the tone quality of others. Even tiny changes to the bridge will affect the tone, volume of sound produced, etc.
@Oasix21 The violin in the video is about 90 years old, made in Germany. I've written a handy guide guide for saving money by picking up a good used violin rather than buying a new one. My book is called - The Fiddle and Violin Buyer's Guide, and its available for purchase online from my web site.
Where is a good place to buy parts for violins? The end pin of my tail piece broke in half while I was placing new strings on it. =o[ I am not a happy camper...I also live in Hawaii and violins are not as popular as ukulele's and so its very difficult to find parts...do you have a favorite website or suggestion? I want and need to play!
That is a common occurrence with pegs from time to time. Its best to find someone who plays violin to show you how to tighten them in place. Meanwhile, practice pushing them into their holes in the scroll while using your other hand to push on the opposite side of the scroll. Do this first before trying to put the violin in tune. Wiggle them a little from side to side while pushing, and they will stick better. When tuning, be very careful not to tighten the strings too much and break them. Ryan
@4stringjoe You should also note that the they might need a humidifier. On mine it took my a long while to figure that out. I also had to check that the pegs were fitted properly. And as you mentioned pushing them in can work. But the humidity of the violin can contribute to the pegs slipping. Oh and thanks for the awesome video. For some reason, when i bought my violin the brige was badly made and so I had to get a replacement. And now that I do my violin sounds awesome. I am still new tho.
@curemymind Thanks, yes, if the air is really dry, the wood can shrink causing slipping, not such a problem in humid climates. Pegs can be reshaped by a luthier for a perfect fit though. Temporary repairs, if needed - chalk dust provides friction, bar soap provides lubricant, an entire fresh orange peel in the case serves like a dampit to humidify a violin. I discuss and cover these conditions and many more in my book - The Fiddle and Violin Buyer's Guide.
The black disc is a cap on the end of a hollow plastic tube which extends inside the violin. This tube has water in it. The water evaporates slowly, moisture is released, and the violin wood retains some of this moisture. This helps prevent the violin wood from from cracking by becoming too dry. These devices can be purchased. A popular brand is "Dampit."
Thankss i have a question..... a violinist who fixed the soundpost of my violin puts the bridge forward of those marks, not in the middle of those marks, its that correct??? i ask this, because i have a great violin and the 1st 2nd and 3... strings dont have the same resonance of the 4 string. they sound more poor.
I suggest showing your violin to another luthier for a second opinion. The sound post must be in proper relationship to the position of the bridge for best sound. This is usually a standard process. But another factor is the design of your violin. For example, I have seen a violin where the f holes were placed improperly during the original construction, so that a luthier had to place the bridge slightly forward of the notch marks on purpose, in order to obtain the best sound.
I just bought a new violin and searching the internet for information. While looking for instruction on setting the bridge, I found your video the best and most thorough for understanding. Thanks
:') Violin sounds so much better thanks!

Have you ever heard of that "secret" where you drill holes on the bottom of the bridge, under each string, for 'better' sound?

@jdgrahamo You should not use this type of humidifier. I have seen lots of damage caused by them... can cause open seams.

should the centers of the feet of the bridge lined up with the inner notches or the outer notches?
arvin0615 1 year ago
center on a line midway between the inner and outer notches.

What's the difference between a violin and a (wait for it....) fiddle?

The person who plays it.
