I'm on my green p's and have a commodore wagon. It's lowered (a little bit, not noticeable for most people), has some tasteful 17" wheels and a minor exhaust system upgrade. I never speed, hoon, tailgate etc, but I have been pulled over several times recently. Nothing's wrong, but it's a hassle being stopped up to 3 times in a single long trip.
It would be much more effective to target bad drivers and drivers who break road rules. Rather than just pull p-plate drivers over whenever you see one.

LMFAO I got my L's in Canada at 14 and my full licenses at 16 then i come to Australia an i have to put a green letter on my window to drive >.<, and legally I can drive my car with a v12 engine but I cant drive my v8 engine so the law states you can drive v6 but not v8 but you can drive a v12 engine??? Australian driving law is trolling they want you to drive a v6 or a v12 but not a v8! got to love western australian driving law looool.

In 2010 more provisional drivers were on the road than in 2005, the number of laws for provisional drivers has massively increased making the leash a lot shorter. A fair chunk of those being completely stupid, don't get me wrong some of those laws are needed for the general idiots on the road. IMO the money spent trying to ban all provisional drivers off the road would be better spent elsewhere or with different tactics i.e giving them a controled environment to do the stupid crap they do

My mate almost got killed on his moto cos of an old Betty pulling out on him when she was doing a u turn on the highway. She failed to stop causing a B- double to Jack knife (next to my mate) went across the first lane and hitting my mate in the second. One week earlier she did the samething to a school bus. It's not just Australia. Where you have big letters telling the cops to pull you over. Here in the US I'm pulled over at least 5 times a month on average. First 16 years of my life I had never had a cop so much as talk to me.

@MrRayman217 the P is for Provisional, basically it's a temporary licence you have for 5 years until you earn your open (full) licence. And you're required to display either a red or green 'P plate' depending on how long you've had it.
Despite the news story in this video the process is actually quite thorough. The media just loves to make a big deal out of nothing, especially when it involves young people.

In 2005, the zero tolerance speeding did not exist for provisional 1 drivers in NSW. In 2007, it was introduced, so ANY speeding offence on a provional 1 licence results in a 3 month suspension. It's only obvious that the suspension rate would increase. For speeding offences in which fully licenced drivers would normally only lose 1 demerit point, P plater get suspended licences. This logic of raising the age for this reason as well as others, contradict themselves. This is getting stupid.

It may have doubled, but only 2 or 3 years ago they also made speeding an INSTANT loss of licence offence. When I got my Ps in 2006, I was able to get caught speeding and maintain my licence.
This is why the statistic has doubled. It annoys me when everything isn't put in perspective... It's like every year the road toll goes up, but noone mentions the 25,000 new motorists.
No cars = more unemployment with people not being able to get access to work with out a car.. Not gonna ask mum and dad to take them to work everytime..

IMO the money spent trying to ban all provisional drivers off the road would be better spent elsewhere or with different tactics i.e giving them a controled environment to do the stupid crap they do

The media are only telling part of the story here. In fact, the reason for the increases are:
People now have to be on their Ps for 3 years minimum
There are many many more P platers now than in 2005
The laws were changed so Red P platers lose their license for a FIRST offence.
If you line everything up correctly, the current generation are better drivers than the ones from 2005.

My mate almost got killed on his moto cos of an old Betty pulling out on him when she was doing a u turn on the highway. She failed to stop causing a B- double to Jack knife (next to my mate) went across the first lane and hitting my mate in the second. One week earlier she did the samething to a school bus. She rode off 2 cars in less than 2 weeks.
Fair enough there is hoons but pull good p-platers less and start pulling the oldies over more!

Maybe change the approach?
Instead raising the age or make tuffer rules for hooning.
Put P Platers through advance driving course and show them what happens at those speeds.
Reward P-platers who follow the rules.
Educating and rewarding young adults and kids seems to be far more effective way to help them understand, the price of one bad choice or immature action can lead them.
Why not make track affordable for young adults to hoon or race in controlled environment.

@MrRayman217 the P is for Provisional, basically it's a temporary licence you have for 5 years until you earn your open (full) licence. And you're required to display either a red or green 'P plate' depending on how long you've had it.
Despite the news story in this video the process is actually quite thorough. The media just loves to make a big deal out of nothing, especially when it involves young people.

wot about those who have never even had a driving test in australia? our government allows anyone with a drivers licence anywhere in the world to drive in oz. this means u can buy a forged licence for $50 from thailand and drive one our roads.
from the other side of the argument i cant understand y they want to lift the age limit but thats not the solution. the solution is limiting p platers to a 1.3ltr or smaller 4 cyl engine non turbo...pretty hard to speed in a car with no power.

@Benji19922 you realise that would limit P platers to an extremely small % of cars on the road. Also, what if a P plater lives in the country and needs a 4x4? What if a P plater has a trade and needs a ute? Think of the 2nd hand market aswell, limiting P platers to 1.3ltr or smaller engine is just plain idiocy, the market would suffer hugely. Not to mention as said by the cop in the video, the majority are doing the right thing. And besides, theyll just drive there mates car for fun.

..realised that I was in her blind spot, almost directly beside them. I had to swerve into another lane to avoid a collision. It's the same stuff over and over. Inexperience may make P Platers dangerous, but sheer laziness and complacency coupled with bad habits (that have had years to develop) and a lack of intitial or recent driver education makes a lot with their full license just as much of a threat, if not more. Because there sure is a fucking lot more of them.

Of course the numbers are going to increase when the restrictions placed on p plate drivers, their enforcement, and the penalty for violating them increases. I'm not trying to deny that P Platers are dangerous - anyone driving a car is - but rather than focusing largely, and in a lot of ways, solely on P Platers scrutiny should be turned to the driving population as a whole. lost my license for not showing a P plate on the front of the car, i had one on the back though. now i understand i have to respect the law but not having a p plate on the front of my car wont kill anyone. whats worse is i got done on the only road leaving my school, it took the whole local police station to pull over every p plater for breathos at 3pm on a thursday after noon. because we drink at school all day like normal students.

In 2005, the zero tolerance speeding did not exist for provisional 1 drivers in NSW. In 2007, it was introduced, so ANY speeding offence on a provional 1 licence results in a 3 month suspension. It's only obvious that the suspension rate would increase. For speeding offences in which fully licenced drivers would normally only lose 1 demerit point, P plater get suspended licences. This logic of raising the age for this reason as well as others, contradict themselves. This is getting stupid.

It may have doubled, but only 2 or 3 years ago they also made speeding an INSTANT loss of licence offence. When I got my Ps in 2006, I was able to get caught speeding and maintain my licence.
This is why the statistic has doubled. It annoys me when everything isn't put in perspective... It's like every year the road toll goes up, but noone mentions the 25,000 new motorists.
