movie is nothing like the book it, it represents like one 50th of the book and some of the things are changed, read the book it is the most wonderful book I have ever read.
both were great actors, indeed, but the ending shot couldn't be a success without the diver who peddled the water beneath McQueen (look at 3:14 and onward)...so the credit should also go to the crew, otherwise McQueen would have been drifted to nowhere in the middle of the big ocean...:-)
Long time ago my dad recorded this for VHS and the record stopped exactly at 1:17 at the end of the cassette... So after I first watched it I looked everywhere to buy it but without luck many years later I saw the very end on DVD, I was glad he made it...
Just like this movie...Life will eventually come to an end. The Bible says that we will die once and then be judged by God. If you ever lies, stolen, lusted after a woman/guy, hated, taken God's name etc your on your way to Hell. But Jesus (who is God) came and died on the cross taking our sins upon His sinless self. We broke the law He paid our fine. We need to repent (turn away from sin) and trust in Him alone and we will be forgiven and enter in Heaven when we die
You wonder movies like this are going to made again! All you can see these days is Transformers crap and boobs and legs and fake fast drivers. That all make me puke.
Even when Hoffman and M´cqueen deliver great perfomances, Papillon escaped with a very strong man who drowned in quicksands and the whole story ends when Papillon received his venezuelan citizenship.Notice that Papillon was hold by a diver below him when he shouts-Hey bastards, I´m still here!
@iBruceSpirit read the book...yo'll see he whas only 37 years old when he got to venezuela and got his FREEDOM...and trust me...this aint the END in the book...after jumping that cliff he's gonna end up in Georgetown & later in El Dorado's prison
LOVE the music score of the movie too. One of those movies, when it's on - ya gotta watch it and I paid THAT price many late nights when I had to got to school or work the next day. Probably time to finally get the DVD I think for me :)
I remember when I first watched the movie on VHS the cassette ended just before McQueen reached the water, and for years i didn't know the real ending...
@1966buttons "Is Papillon a true story?" It is not 100% a true story. It was a self bio book written by Henri Charrière, but much of the specifcs are hard to substantiate. Still a great movie of course! Partly true is good enough for me :)
McQueen plays the hero in this particular scene, but Hoffman performs the best as the anti-hero. The expressions on his face mean as he had the strength to be the one that could leave everything behind and start a new life.. he lives in that character as nothing else..the first time I saw the movie I remember I really believed that Hoffman would grab his bag of coconuts waiting in front of him and jump into the rough sea!
I've read somewhere that McQueen made that jump himself ... also, with regard to the diver ... they could have kept him invisible by simply having him wear a diving suit of the same color as the water, rather than a bright color (as in the film) ...
@easyscore yes absolutely, and this I think is his greatest perfomance of all time, yes he owns the screen as you say, just "commands your attention" for the whole film
I love this story. I like the part where Papillon tells Dega: if only I had some coconuts, some sacking and a well trained diver, than maybe, just maybe, I might have a chance escaping.
Awesome movie. Dar Robinson made that jump...!!!

@ Pascal:
Since I esteem this as one of the 4 or 5 best movies ever made, I will be glad to translate:
Louis: "I need to tell you something ..."
Papillon: "Louis, you don't have to say anything ...".
Louis: "I meant to ... I'm sorry."
Papillon: "I know."
Louis: "You'll be killed ... you know that?"
Papillon: "Maybe ...".
Louis: "Please don't do it ...".
