Well, you can still have a diplomatic victory with plenty of war. I had a good diplomacy victory on Continents (standard size) in which I played as Japan, destroyed both of the other civs on the continent I started out on, had a good tech lead, destroyed the largest civ on the other continent (while keeping the weakest as my ally), and after the UN was built, the votes of my civ and Gandhi were enough to ensure diplomatic victory.
My best was a religious victory on beyond the sword. I was carthaginian, my religion was Confucianism(which was the world religion). I had victory through the apostolic palace.

Civ is easy, just build a lot of cottages early and always in the game, long term investment ftw!
