  • I heard this a couple of times on WZZQ 102.9 in Jackson, MS, around 1974 or 1975. Once I was lucky enough to have a cassette ready and recorded it. Thankfully the DJ gave Brockett's name, but said not to bother trying to find it, because it was impossible. I wore that cassette out over the years and thanks to ebay my wife tracked down an original Oracle copy for me a few years ago. GREAT job on this video, man!

  • I wish Leadbelly could've heard this. I have the original lp by Brockett, it nice to be able to put this on one of my playlists. This is manic comedy, what happened to him?

  • Thanks Again for posting this it is a Favorite of Mine - I First heard this while driving down Main street of Marceline Mo. in a Vega Station Wagon. It was playing in "Beaker Street" KAAY - Little Rock Ark.

  • Well, if that ain't the way it happened, that's the way it SHOULD have happened!

  • This one of the best. I remember hearing it on FM in 70s. If you think about classical music this is a short piece. You gatta let it out Captain. I'm gonna move you iceberg !

  • I have this album, its a 33rpm, very funny stuff, not the whole album, just this song

  • I think there is a mistake in this video. When they are taking about the 1st mate in Mexico, they are showing Jack Johnson...Unless I am just confused????

  • @musicmankenn I caught that too...

  • I have been looking for this song for years, I had the album years ago, but forgot the performers name. A big smile on my face today.

  • Thanks for this! I saw what might have been Brockett's last public performance of this. He came to perform at Union College in 1972. It was a small coffeehouse venue where the audience was requesting Titanic. He demurred that he didn't perform it anymore. The coffeehouse manager Becky G. showed him a news clipping, that date was the 60th anniversary of the sinking. He agreed, and launched into a half-hour monster version of his Legend. 40 years later, I'll never forget it.

  • THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for such an amazingly FUN treatment of this classic.. took me about 20 years to find an original pressing of this.. first heard of it on KAAY radio late night on A.M. radio..to me.. the search was worth it.. and I'm SO happy to be able to point my friends here to get a chance to hear such a clean copy with a fun video to boot.. again my heartfelt THANKS! great job!

  • @bigbruteusa Heh. You're welcome, man. It was a fun one to do. Stay tuned, I'm working on another Beaker St. classic, along the same lines as this one. Hope to have it finished this week (now that I'm done Xmas shopping). =) Thanks for the kind words, and Rock On!

  • @EggsZachtly I second the thank-you! Sad thing is today's DJ's call themselves old hippies..but I've yet to find one that has ever heard this great blast from the past! I remember lying awake nights at the tender age of 13 listening to "underground music" and realizing THIS was real music. Hearing all the stuff am radio wouldn't play in Grand Rapids in 1969...and that I was "too young" to listen to. I'm so grateful to have witnessed it all and can hear from others who did as well.

  • Thank you so much. I remember being high as a kite and listening to this song about a bizillion times when I was a kid. Those were the carefree days!

  • Nothing short of BRILLIANT. Must confess I never heard of Jaime Brockett until a friend posted a link to this video and I'm so happy that my eyes and ears were treated to such an amazing experience. (EggsZachtly, you sure did a fantastic job putting this together and getting it out. I was in awe for the full 13:31

  • @Leocadia333 Thank you very much for the kind words. It's a fun song, and was a fun project. I'm glad that it brought a few good minutes of pleasure to you!

  • I always thought the stanza at the end.."Meanwhile back on the stateside, ol' Jack Johnson...why, he's standin' up on the pier he's fishin' away; he's got himself a little stick n' a line n' he gets a tug. He pulls it on up n' it's a big, wet, blue soggy mess n' on the inside on the lining written in big gold letters it says "USS Titanic" and stuck right above it was a wet roach!"

I thought it was a wet ROPE! (The 497 1/2 feet of it) That would have been fitting...Jack lives and he got the dope!

  • Love It! Just sent the link to all that would remember and to everyone too young to have never heard it.

    An instant Classic!

I read through the comments to see if anyone said anything about your using Jack Johnson's image when talking about the first mate? (The 5:54 Mark)??

Thanks for the hard work & sharing!

Fav Line...("497 1/2 feet of rope, Whadaya got that for?"

    ... "I Don't Know...I carry It")

  • @binocularBob Ya, I've been chastised about using the wrong image. It was a long two weeks putting it together, and in the blur I missed that image change. Sorry. =)

  • This is sooooooo good...It is beyond words......

  • "USS TITANIC"?? I thought it was built in England? It never even made it to the US. How could it be the USS Titanic? --Just wonderin'...

  • @RURALWARROOM Oh, like the history books in school never lied to you about anything else! ;)

  • now wait, i believe all the stuff bout the boxer guy, but nobody can hold their breath for 52 minutes

    true story my ass

  • @Zeronightx LOL =)

  • A great ballad from my youth - The video really pulls it together - Great job

  • @wizard954 Thanks! It's a fun, favorite of mine. =)

  • Great video!! This song is an amazing slice of genius folk ... and this video just makes it twice as entertaining. Very nice work.

  • @eggmanrules Wow! You're very kind! Thanks! =)

  • I had garbaged picked this album back in 1975& it was still sealed!!

  • @The1066BMJ Nice. And, yup... there's a lot of fools out there. =)

  • What a blast. GREAT flashback. Wonderful editing. Sure it took a lot of time. Appreciate your efforts.

    Want another toke Captain? Right!

  • @dreamcatcheriowa hahaha Thanks! It was a fun song, which made the editing fun and easy! ;)

  • Shades of Bleeker Street and Clyde Clifford.

I used to listen that station in Little Rock after midnight......way before FM radio. It was the only station that played Black Oak Arkansas,Blood Rock etc.

BTW I lived in West Liberty Iowa and we could still listen wayyyy up here.

  • Dr Demento used to play this song good to hear it again

  • This is fuckin GREAT!!! I heard this a few years back and it is funny and some great guitar playing....

  • K.P.P.C. IN PASADENA IS WHERE I 1ST HERD THIS HILARIOUS RANT. ITZ STILL A ROCKER!!!!! THANKS4PUTTING IT UP.

  • @emilyoshiro My pleasure! Thanks for stopping by! =)

  • I heard this song once in the 70's, was re-introduced to it via community radio 'bout 5 years ago. Jamie used to have a website where you could play it anytime you wanted to listen to it. It's gone now.

Thank you for putting this together, Eggs!

  • @terroredc My pleasure, man. It's one of my faves. Oh, and it's "Jaime". Ya I know, I'm being picky. But... that's how he spells it. =)

  • @EggsZachtly Thanks again, Eggs, I've seen a few different spellings of his name. Your spelling clarification will make seeking his music a lot easier. 8)

  • I've looked for this for years, thank you!

  • @1955lippy You're welcome! Thanks for listening! =)

  • first heard this on wusf in Tampa early 70s found the record and kept it till we had a roof failure during hurricane Charlie It is a classic sxxt baby I ain't gonna make rope nomore

  • Excellent job. It must have taken you a long time to create this. I put this to memory 30 years ago and revisit it at least once a week. It's easier to sing than it is to play at that tempo.

  • @skinnercrick Thanks! It probably took longer to find the pics than put it together. It's a long time fave of mine, too, tho it really got burnt into my brain doing the vid, LOL. I can listen to it again, now though. =)

  • had the good fortune of hearing this when it came out and been in love with it since. FM radio used to be soooo cool !!!

    FAR OUT !!!!

saw Jaime Brockett a decade back or so in Massachusetts at the Old Vienna Coffehouse (now gone sadly).

he didn't do this tune but was well worth seeing and hearing anyway.

    thanks for the upload !!

  • @MrKirkenstein You're welcome. Thanks for listening! =)

  • good video.

  • WONDERFUL! I ran onto Jamie Brocket and his 497-1/2 feet of rope back in college (some 40 years ago!). The Ballad of the USS Titanic was hilarious back then and made even more so with your video presentation.

    THANK YOU!

  • @Troubleshooter125 Thanks Troubleshooter. I appreciate your comments very much. It's a fun song. =)

  • @Troubleshooter125 LOL Thanks, man. And, you're welcome! =)

  • @EggsZachtly I visited a friend at his college dorm in 1970 and heard this song for the first and only time. But I never forgot it and I am listening to it now for the first time in 41 years!

  • So hilarious never heard but has my attention. Good videoage.

  • @Chandler6of7 Heh. Thanks, K. ;-)

  • FANTASTIC!!!!!!!

  • @xwagner76 Thanks! =)

  • This is one of my all time favorite songs. I came here just to hear it again and was pleasantly surprised that you had used pictures to make a video. I laughed when I saw that you used Burgess Meridith as Jack's manager and knew that this was going to be really good. It was a funny surprise to see Jack turn into Buckwheat too!

This is really great and I just wanted to thank you for sharing it.

  • @1blujay Thanks, blujay. I appreciate the kind words! It's one of my favorite tunes, too. =)

  • Great job puting this music to photos, !!!!

  • @TheETHOM Thanks, it was a fun one to play with. Once I found a pic of "two sardine sandwiches", there was no turning back! lol

  • I remeber my Aunt letting me listen to this song a long time ago on a cassette someone had given to her. Of course one time the player ate it so I thought it was gone. I have looked for it many times. I had no idea who sang it. Thank you so much for bringing it back.

  • @davisfloyd1 Your Aunt turned you on to some good music! You're welcome, btw. Always a good feeling when you can bring good memories back for someone. =)

  • Haven't laughed this much since1972. Great post!

  • @RayLomax1 Heh. Thanks, man. Glad you liked it!

  • Haven't laughed this much 1972. Great post!

  • @mlodico44 Thanks! Glad you liked it!

  • Love your video - great job with the pics, had me laughing. I remember loving this song back in the early 70s.

  • @robinette222 Thanks for the kind words. Glad you enjoyed it! =)

  • I see my previous post about the KAAY transmitter building (home of Beaker Street) being torn down was flagged as spam. Well, thanks to whoever had a soul small enough to do that.

  • @dbt51 I wouldn't worry about it, dbt. YT probably flags anything with a link it as spam. =)

  • To everyone who ever heard this on Beaker Street over KAAY 1090 out of Little Rock, Arkansas: the company plans to tear down the transmitter building from which Clyde Clifford did the show. Also going to the scrap heap will be the magnificent old 50,000-watt RCA tube transmitter. You may follow this sad progress at mighty1090kaay,blogspot.com.

  • THANKS FOR MAKING THIS! I still have the original album Jamie made with this on it..REMEBER THE WIND AND THE RAIN. You really did good by making this video.

  • @TheYardbirdsfan Thanks. I tried. =)

  • Yes, this is great, like this alot, great post

    Damond RYdes

    GREAT video of this ballad!

  • I have not heard this since it came out, and I have the original album as well! It was REMEMBER THE WIND AND THE RAIN.

    GREAT video of this ballad!

  • Great video version of this hard to find classic...well done...time to spool up some rope.

  • @mprwac Thank you for the kind words. It was always one of my faves, and it a song that invoked so many mental images, it was an easy vid to do, that needed to be done. =) Just don't burn down the factory! ;)

  • AWESOME!

  • @justpassnthru THANKS! =)

  • I have been looking for this piece since the late 1970's. I first heard a copy of it that was lifted on to reel to reel from the USF radio station in Tampa back in about 1971. The video makes it much more enjoyable to hear and very easy to visualize the story. I swear to god, I always thought that those people running and steering the titanic were either stoned, or should have been...Thanks for doing this. 40 freaking years looking for a song. I'm so glad that Al Gore created the internet.

  • @donnyrhode LOL! Thanks for the kind words, and I'm glad you won't have to wait a 41st year! =)

  • I HAVE BEEN LOKING FOR THIS RECORD FOR OVER 15 YEARS!!! WHAT A GREAT VIDEO!!! Thank you so much for posting it!

  • I HAVE BEEN LOKING FOR THIS RECORD FOR OVER 15 YEARS!!! WHAT A GREAT VIDEO!!! Thank you so much for posting it!

  • @daubs1974 Thanks! Glad you liked it! =)

  • Thanks you brought me back to verey happy times of my life in Jersey city and also Greenwich Village Thanks bro

  • @bootytoot: What would really be cool is if he could recruit the Dropkick Murphys to do a electrified/Celtic/Oi!/StreetPunk arrangement of this masterpiece! Listening to it, I definitely can see how it could be done!

  • excellent video !!!!!!!!!!!!!! takes me back a few years when heard it on beaker street

  • @LLee19722000 Thanks, LLee. I've a few errors in some pics on it, and maybe someday I'll find the time to fix them. But, I was pretty pleased with the end result. Ahhh... Beaker Street. Sure hope that Clyde finds a new home. =)

  • It was about 1973, Carlsbad California, there was a new FM station KARL FM, that played music we did not get much of in those days. Jamie Brockett was one (along with Lou Reed, obscure Hendricks, unpublished Who) and rock you wish you could remember more of (vs/the crap that the radios play now adays!) I was there. Chris Kona

  • Great tune - Cruisin the back roads of Dane Co in 1970 @ 3:00 listening to Clyde Cliffore on Beeker St. & The Royal Crown Hair Dressing Show.

  • I was at Green Lake in Seattle with Ann and Nancy (Heart) and he did jump in the lake. This song blew my mind. It was a great warm up for Led Zeppelin and Three Dog Night. This video is great and brings back memories of a great afternoon on a hot summer day , listening to awesome music and chill'in with friends. I think I had a couple feet of rope also.

  • @hexawolf

Wow! I'm honored. Thanks to him for a great, fun song!

  • far out glen

  • Too COOL!!

  • That is just beautiful video work in accompaniment of a great song. Well done.

Rumor has it that Jaime Brockett is recording a new version in observance of the 100th anniversary of the good ship's ill-fated maiden journey, April of next year.

  • @bootytoot Thanks, bootytoot (I can honestly say that I've never used that word in a sentence - laughing as I typed it, no less!) =)

Thanks for the rumor, too! I'll keep my ears peeled!

  • Apparently this dude jumped in the water after his set playing at Green Lake (Seattle,WA) w' Led Zeppelin and Three Dog Night in 1969, crazy!

  • Great job on the video, EggsZachtly. Ballad of the Titanic was a star attraction on KAAY Beaker Street.

You should check out Clyde's archive at beakerstreet d o t c o m. There are limited recordings of past shows. The KKPT 2008 playlist is the best, but I think there is only one show from that station.

Clyde started on KAAY Little Rock, but lost the job after 10 years or so. He went to several other Little Rock stations that wouldn't let him play all of his old list, but KKPT did. Enjoy.

  • @billo321 Thanks for the kind words. I was hoping that Clyde would find another place right away. I hope he doesn't end up on satellite, as I don't have access (or intention to acquire it). I appreciate the heads-up on the Facebook page. I'll join, and forward that info to friends that are/were fans.

Oh, and last time I listened, that "spacey background track" was "Cannabis Sativa" by the band, "Head". =)

  • Until last Sunday, Feb. 6, 2011, Beaker Street was on KKPT Little Rock, with Clyde Clifford at the helm. Same spacy background track, same great underground music.

You can catch up with Clyde at Beakerstreet dot c o m .

You can support getting Clyde and Beaker Street another gig on the air or on XM or SIrius by joining Keep Beaker Street Alive on Facebook. Just go to Face book and search Keep Beaker Street Alive. It started a few days ago and already has 800 members.

  • Great job! It's been 40years since I heard this brings back a flood of good memories.

  • Wonderful to hear this one again, THANK YOU!

  • i have this album.......gr8 songs.......

  • Thanks for this fantastic memory of 1969 &70 on Beekers street late night in a little town of Russellville Arkansas when I was 20 years old. I just went back there for thirteen mins.

  • @glen1720

hahaha! Stop by and I'll drive, anytime! Glad you liked it, man.

  • Thanks for the fantastic film! Please read more Jaime Brockett stuff here mufc dot dk slash jaime - cheers Barry

  • I'll be damn! Really brings a smile to my face. Haven't heard this song in 40 something years. WCOL-FM - brings back some fun times. Outstanding quality in the recording along with a good video. Thanks for posting.

  • Of all the uploads of this song, your video is the best. Great work!

YouTube is the 8th Art. Thank you for an outstanding example of how well it can be done.

    Elisa

  • @erscott13

Wow! Thanks Elisa, for the very kind words. It was fun to do and one of my favorite tunes. =)

  • @EggsZachtly You're quite welcome. This song brings back memories for so many of us.

  • Great job on the video!!

This use to be a favorite of mine.

I haven't heard it in since the days of Clyde Clifford & Beeker Street on KAAY out of Little Rock. That been almost 40 years ago.

Thanks for posting it. Ya brought a smile to my face. ;~)

  • @artabr

hahaha! Thanks, glad ya liked it! =)

  • Excellent video to a one of a kind, fantastic, classic song! Have been searching for this for awhile. Thank you..

  • @4tuneagent

Thanks for the kind words. I agree with "one of a kind, fantastic, classic song". It's been a fav for decades.

  • This is great, I have loved this song since the 60's and i still have it on vinyl too. this song is so old but now i am too.

  • This is absolutely brilliant! I also love your pics. Maybe, I heard this song on Dr. Demento many years ago. I wish I could play that kind of guitar. lol It's funny that the key words that drew to this song were "Jack Johnson." Thank you for sharing this superb song!

  • This is the true story of the Titanic - 1913!

    He's diggin the ice burg!

  • @umajunkcollector LOL ya... that's one of my favorite lines in any song!

  • Thanks for posting this. I've been looking for it for a long time. Great job editing.

  • @youthnotlost Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it! =)

  • sad what happen to all those poor souls that went down with the Titanic but this song is kinda funny

  • Great song. . . and a performance that is still as powerful as it was "40 years ago" when I first heard it ( and I still have that vinyl copy ). . . and even though I haven't smoked any rope in years. . . it is as funny as ever. Good work on the video.

  • @magic5914 Agreed. "Great song"! Thanks for the comments, it's a fun song.. Do you have the Capitol re-issue, or the Oracle release? (just wunderin') =)

  • Outstanding work you have done with this piece.

Thanks for sharing it with us all.

  • Fantastic Eggs. I have this in storage. Unbelievable. Of course he has the Titanic going the wrong way, but you can't have everything. That hemp was pretty good back then.

  • @triplettam Thanks. lol =)

  • @EggsZachtly And I meant to tell you what an absolutely brilliant job you did with the images. That took some work and I just wanted you to know it's appreciated. Bravo!

  • Brockett & I had an affair in the 80s.He's a dear, sweet, funny man.

  • Thank you, .Brockett's an old friend & it's great to see a clear vocal & clever images!

  • @horsesinger42

"An old friend" as in you actually *know* him?

  • (1971) Late night in Southwest Wisconsin (UW Platteville) our AM radios were tuned to the BOOMING signal coming from KAAY in Little Rock, Arkansas and the radio show "Beaker Street". This song was the highlight of every evening!

  • Thank you so much for this. Excellent work on the video. A favorite of mine from underground FM radio in the 60s. (KCAC and KDKB in Phoenix) For decades, I would talk to people about this song and I couldn't find anyone who had ever heard of it.

  • @nedphoenix

Thanks for the kind words. It was kinda fun to do, tho my main objective was learning a new video editing program. =) I was pleased with most of how it turned out. And, I hear ya... I know plenty of people that never heard it before. =)

  • This was the highlight of the week - listening to Dr. Demento on Sunday night, (KMET/94.7 in L.A.) and hearing this song.

  • Thanks for the upload EggsZachtly, if for no other reason than historical purposes, the accompanying visuals were splendid, and Jamie Brockett cranked out a winner back in the year of Our Lord 1970 A.D.! Thanks as always to You Tube for leaving the light on and the ever accomodating SPACE!

  • @redsfanstu

Agreed! I originally had it in two parts (which I detest). They upped the allotted time, so I upped the appropriate vid. =)

  • i've been looking for this for over 30 years. first heard it on wmmr philly. thanks bro!

  • what a great song it makes me smile everytime!

  • @lilprincessT15

    Ahyup! Me too! =)

  • FABULOUS job on the video!!!

This song is a huge fave of mine, from one of my all-time favorite albums.

    THANK YOU!!!!!!

  • Good work with the video man

  • @RevRico1 Thanks man. Was fun to do.

  • When my brother and I heard this on the radio a hundred years or so ago (lol,) we would quote parts of the song at random moments, like "I'm commencing to hold it in!" Classic song.

  • @DanteCubit3000 hahaha you ain't the only one! ;)

  • haven't heard this one in a Looonnng time

  • You are my new hero!

  • @neogawa LOL (I think!) =)
