without Tony Banks = no genesis. yup, thats sort of obvious i know but i dont think people realize how much of the genesis sound is due to Tony Banks.
I used to dance to this album with my daughters when they were infants. We would dance around the room for hours til I couldn't lift them up anymore.
Now my oldest is an all-state flautist and my youngest plays keyboards, french horn and trumpet. A coincidence....I think not.
Genesis circa 70-76 is the best modern music ever recorded on vinyl. There are others that are amazing, but nothing, and I mean nothing, comes close to the absolute mastery of this British quintet.
@kennywowie sorry, YES don't "get close"...they are BETTER. Even though I LOVE Genesis, King Crimson and YES (and other english progrssive bands), YES is the peak. More than 20 years listening to them...they all got it!
@Neteacher why go here? Getting close wasn't my term, I was just using because the previous post did. It is foolish to say one is better than the other. We all know they were all unique and amazing. When Selling England came out, I was the biggest Yes freak, thinking CTTE was the absolute pinnacle, which it may be, but there are other mountains of near height, what's a few inches to the Himalayas? SEBTPound so blew me away, I learned to love all God's prog children. Well, the worthy ones. ha!
@flyingsayon The lyrics to this are not bad at all if you ask me. But you know what song I do find VERY disappointing lyrically? "Squonk". Before I read the lyrics, I thought that song was about something completely different. It is really a shame, because Phil's vocal performance on "Squonk" (as well as the instrumentation) is mind-blowing.
MIke's briiliant bass patterns and runs are awesome and inspiring. I admire the solitude and sweetness of Mike. Also, MIke's studio guitar playing on "...And then there were three" songs like 'Down and out', and 'Many too many' with that fantastic and unique slide work " unlike Steve Hackett's style stood out unique and unmatchable till this day! Mike unfortunately was very underrated both as guitarist and bassist! TO MICHAEL RUTHERFORD...CHEERS! We love you!
Exactly how corny would the opening intro sound using either the RMI Electra-Piano 368X or Hohner Pianet? This is citing the reason why Genesis no longer included the intro to this song live in concert after wrapping up the "Selling England" tour.
@ClassicTVMan1981X ...very perceptive Classic, very perceptive. Interesting observation. Your are definately in a class of apprecation of the fine and extraordinaire, and seem to exhibit a certain and unique creativity and height!
I think what Tony could have done to save this part of the song live in concert was to play it down an octave lower so that it would be within the limits of the keyboard.
@ProcolHarum1967 I rememebr hearing about that. Apparently, he made so many mistakes during the intro that he stopped playing, screamed "FUCK!" and left the stage.
@ProcolHarum1967 interesting, I heard many versions of why it happened, including that Banks did not want to play it on electric piano, cause it gave him different feel, then the real piano, and he could not reproduce a natural sound. Can understand him! Nevertheless, in Montreal, 1974, he played an intro (and not on a natural piano), dunno why :)
@magomerlino64 why is this? i always knew that italy loooved genesis but never knew why... what's their infatuation with these guys? how did that come about? seems kinda random to me :P
@Tsukasa009 I heard that, one of the reasons for them not to be loved too much in there own country, is the lyrics, they say that they were kinda "childish". So being, that most of the people in Italy doesn't understand English, and so listening at the music, and, we must admit, that, they are 4 Great Musicians! But why, they had such success in Italy, rather than other countries, I don't have a clue. Ciao.
@magomerlino64 Really? That's an interesting tidbit. They are definitely WAY underrated in North America, but nonetheless they're "living gods" in my home and my father's home.
@1776Matthew We considered them something like "living gods" lol when I was a kid in the U.S. in the 70s and 80s. My friends had nothing but contempt for post-Gabriel Genesis and I have to agree.
I first heard this song 1978 on the 'Seconds out' live album which I played to dust. Then I heard it on the Selling England... album and was fascinated by the clarity of sound, and the playing of Hackett, clear and unstrained in comparision. Great music.
I love this song! Im only 16 years old but I love their music, and still follow Phil Collins, Tony Banks and Peter Gabriel's music. The music of today sucks... This is real music!
I have this album on Charisma vinyl. The best years of Genesis were definately 1972 to 1974, with albums like Foxtrot, Selling England by the Pound, and Lamb Lies down on Broadway.
And "Selling England by the Pound" was the first Genesis album to feature Tony Banks playing an actual synthesizer -- an ARP Pro-Soloist, among others. But, with five albums to their credit then and just two years before Peter Gabriel bowed out, I'd have to think the true synthesizer sound came in at the group's peak.
@Slo4k It is HE that made a fool of himself, not me.Lol! I asked what Collins had to do with the writing of this song and he thought I was asking what he did in Genesis.
Una vera perla...!
