  • i like this gps, but man it eats batteries. It got stolen(joke is on the thief) and i got a magellan etrex legend this time. It is a newer model and the batteries last a decent amount of time. I like them both

  • Always carry map and compass as backup...and spare batteries...ha!

  • this was my first GPS, still have it, still love it

  • The Obama administration is handing these out at the border with the coords. of the nearest Social Security office and voter registration offices preloaded into them.

  • From a wired in fan...

  • does it work in southamerica?

  • I'm not gonna sit here and try to navigate it backwards!!

    Hulk smaash!!

    What a grumpy guy

  • how do you reset the device? i cant figure it out

  • @sharpshot97c If I remember right you have to connect it to your computer with the cable that comes with it. Has been a good while. Sorry for delay in response.

  • how do you reset the device? i cant figure it out

  • Thanks for the info mate!

Really helpful, now I'm off to the Source to get one :D

Hopefully this well help me find geocaches now :D

  • Thanks for the informative video. I am heading out west and hope it comes in handy for use in the mountains. But I have a maps and compass on stand by..

  • @odettejr It will do you just fine. I just went on a backpacking trip in northern AZ and even under semi heavy cover it never failed to track for me. Thanks for the comment

  • Thanks man

  • will this work with a mac?

  • @clamcrabber Sorry but I haven't got a clue.

  • just got a garmin legend H. this thing is very confusing to me. can't even figure out how to enter coordinates to find a geocache

  • dam i dont get nothing inside or under trees

  • i adverage 25 to 30 feet but takes 3-10 minuts to get satalights/ signals but a good gps for 150$ CAD funds

  • The new Etrex Legend with a colour display is an improvement over the previous legend's screen visibility problem. And the rubber seal over the previous legend loses it's hold with the casing, the glue becomes sticky and the rubber seal becomes loose. This probably effects it's waterproofness. So I suspect the new etrec has improved this. Overall it is a fantastic product, it is one item I will never sell.

  • Yes the color ones are much better. I have had my legend for 3+ years now and have no sign of the rubber separating from the unit. At some point I will upgrade to one of the color rhino units I think. Thanks for the comment.

  • @EinkOLED

Yes, you are totally right, the Garmin Legend Hcx is absolutely amazing! I waited 15 Years, getting something like this. The first Etrex had no HD Capability so you could not do many things. But the Legend Hcx has changed my Life, i will never use cards anymore. With the free Garmin routable Maps you can do everything. Every little way in german forests can be seen, i cant believe it. I use it now for 12 month. The battery life is very good (28 hours). The satellits are located fast.

  • I own the Etrex Legend, purchased it in 2004 for recreational use.

I use it whenever I am on holiday, on aircraft and unfamaliar territory. I waypoint important places such as hotels, meeting points and this helps me locate them later. On aircraft it allows me to track our route, altitude speed etc so I always know where we are and how far we have to go. A very handy device for all life purpose.

  • hey im a farmer,i wanna no the size of a field by goin around the permiter, will this work..thanks

  • yeah you could determine the size of an area by gps no problem. Thanks for the comment/question

  • You could do it quicker and easier (and free) using GoogleEarth.

Zoom in on your farm, click tools, then select "Ruler". Click the path tab.

Just start click points around the perimeter of your farm and your done.

  • Great VId...Got a Garmin 60CSX myself and I wouldn't take anything for it... Customer service with them is great also... Take care and thanks for sharing..

  • Thanks for the comment.

  • I get almost instant reception inside my house. I like this GPS a lot. I find it really meshes well with Google Earth.

The major weakness is the Garmin website. designed by a robot . Fortunately there are hiking forums where fellow users will give lots of help and advice.

  • Yeah I love it. But like you said I don't mess with their website. A complete and total mess especially when browsing for software and patches. Luckily the hardware is awesome. Thanks for the comment.

  • my old gps:) now i have a mlsdestinator3860 when i go outside i take it with me

  • Great Review

    Yeah, Garmin Rocks

  • Yeah I Love them. Thanks for the comments.

  • Can you upload data from the GPS unit to your computer to save for map overlays and put it back on the GPS unit later?

  • You can transfer mapping data and waypoints, routes to and from your computer if you purchase the mapping software.

  • Good review! But you forgot to mention the faults about the unit: the joystick and display are prone to quit working under normal use. I've read all sorts of things on the internet about those problems. I have an eTrex Legend, and the joystick blew on it at 2000 miles. :( I have an eTrex Venture HC now, and i've never had a problem with it!

  • I touched on the display which I had happen to me. As for the joystick I haven't had a problem so my experience has been good. Thanks for your comments.

  • Thanks for the great review! I'll be buying a Legend!!! : )

  • Good deal glad I helped. Thanks for the comments.

  • Me and my brother and planning a trip out to the Utah desert and haven't used a GPS before but (obviously) need to invest in one. Would you say this is a good handheld GPS for a trip like that? And how easy is it to get used to? Thanks in advance for your help. :)

  • Well first I hope that you will have a map and compass as well. This is a good GPS in that it is very beginner friendly with very simple menus and not too many buttons. You could learn basic operation of this GPS in about an hour or so. As for suitability that depends. This GPS will not do turn by turn but for terrain and general outdoors will suit you well and is reasonably durable if taken care of. Good luck and thanks for the comment.

  • Thank you for your reply. :)

  • Not a problem hope I helped some.

  • great vid it helped im going to get the etrex vista hcx for my boat and may use it for camping but mainly marine as uk don't have as many massive open spaces or forrest like the us lol but we have some up north mainly:) thanks **Mason**

  • You are quite welcome. I would invest in a small pelican case for it and a RAM mount if using in/on your boat. The pelican cases are great and usually around 25 dollars and the RAM mounts are some of the best designed I have seen. Thank you for your comment.

  • I was having trouble with my etrex , the screen would freeze up and no functions whatsoever would work . I did a software update to version 3.9 from 3.7 from the garmin website .. took all of about 5 minutes seems to work fine now . Some say disabling the waas may fix some problems too . Good video btw .

  • Yes either of those two will fix the problem. I did the update and have had no problems since. Thanks for the comment.

  • Good review. I own an etrex legend. Great little GPS, but like most of the older etrex series, it's prone to 2 problems - the screen might stop working, and the joystick might stop working. Thats what happened to mine. I have had it for 10 months, I put 2000 KM's on the odometer, and the cursor/choice won't go left when the joystick is pressed left anymore. I might get an eTrex Venture HC soon, though!

  • Thank you and yes the thumb stick can be an issue with these. As for the screen it probably has outdated software. I thought mine was broke till I called Garmin. I installed the new OS and it works great again. Apparently they did something with their satellites. I probably won't upgrade any time soon as it does all I need and more. Thanks for the comment.

  • the legend shows your up to 2 blocks from or past your turn when you turn on maps you installed from mapsource for some reason

  • Weird I haven't experienced that problem but then I don't have those mapsource maps. All I have is the basemap that came with it. All I really use this for is hunting, camping, and hiking so I don't use it for streets. I use my Streetpilot for that. Thanks for the comment.
