If the motor is backfiring due to slow cranking,,,charge the battery!!!!. if you have flames sitting in the carb after a backfire,,crank the motor to pull the falmes out,,dont stand there staring and blowing,, and let the flames burn the insulator gasket or base gasket,,because then you have a air leak. Neat engine! keep up the work.
The Rover's a good engine - had one in another Dolly previously - but this is supposed to be a sorta 'factory car they never built' affair.
This engine revs better and makes more power than a stock 3.5, so has it's benefits - head gasket issues are not exclusive to the Stag V8 at any rate, if uncared for!
The gearbox is a mishmash of TR6, Stag & Sprint parts - can never recall which! 4 speeds with overdrive on 3rd and 4th, driving a Sprint rear axle.
Oddly enough (haha) - I had a 1500 (ex-FWD) that had been mocked up with a 2500 PI & powertrain (later became a Sprint).
The problem was that without really modifying the bulkhead or transmission tunnel, I don't think you could get the engine far back enough to get a sensible radiator or cooling system in.
Would have made a hell of a machine though - and I've seen a 2.5 PI one done, so it's possible! I suspect there are ways around it, like split superthin rads etc...
........it's a big, heavy engine too - so quite a weight to hang that far out over the nose in the Dolly - something else that bothered me slightly.
I think the 1300/1500s use a much smaller gearbox than the sixes/Sprints due to the lower torque outputs - so I'm not sure it'd be a direct swap. Easy to fit one of the 'big' boxes into a 1300 anyway, as the Sprint used them so all the mountings would be available! :)
Hi there - this is not a standard engine, indeed you are correct - all Toledos came with 4 cylinders.
This Stag V8 was fitted using a modified Triumph subframe so in some respects "just bolted in" but was also an awful lot of work in other areas to get it all in.

I had a dolomite 1300, friend had the 2000 I6 version of same engine out of a vitesse, I think that would bolt onto standard 1300 bellhousing etc.
Do u think the 2000 or even the 2500 (were they same block with different strokes and bore?) would fit length wise?
that would be cool, a 2500 with triple 45 dcoe carbs and 285 cam etc.
