It's March 2011 I'll be 60 next month...WOW...I have recently ( about a month ago ) been turned on too Hudie Ledbetter aka Leadbelly & since then I have tried too catch up with the Man...what a life he must have lead as a black man in the USA & dealing with the likes of JimCrow & killi'n a man & above all that STILL be able to churn out the most awe inspiring music & lyric which absolutely blows me away ( should U2 ) ...I digress
I am MAJORLY excited about this. After 45 years of waiting for a real doc about my main Man, I finally see it coming within my lifetime, God willing. Oh yessss. Something to wipe out the lingering bitter aftertaste from Gordon Parks' ill-conceived fantasy "biography" of yore.

I absolutely empathize with you. I'm only 18 years old, but through my grandfather I've come to love Lead Belly's music. I listened to the 4 cd set Lead Belly's Last Session, which saddened me, because he spoke with amazing enthusiasm, but he had an underlying quiver in it as well. I too accidentally saw Gordon Parks' bio-pic and I thought it mocked Lead Belly's legacy, as opposed to honoring it. I hope this documentary does him justice.
I'm in my early 60s now, but it thrills me to know that young people are still discovering and appreciating Leadbelly's music.
They don't seem to make 'em like that anymore. Music changes, and that's OK, but where are singers with such distinct and unique voices as Leadbelly, Howlin' Wolf or Ray Charles these days? If they're out there they ain't gettin' much airplay!

I wish I knew of any good docs on Mr. Ledbetter, but I ain't seen one yet, which is why I'm hoping this movie survives the economic turrmoils we're going through and reaches the release stage.
Dock Boggs, eh? Now there was a true American gnarly-voiced funky white funny-pickin' treasure. His "Oh Death" remains my favorite version. Are you familiar with the 1964 Newport Folk Festival albums? Golden stuff, particularly for me the ensembles with Doc Watson.
No I'm new to this genre, I,ll check it out. I've always been fascinated with American culture in the early 20'th century but this music is so powerful, each artist seems to suffer for their art which adds to its quality. If there has been anything comparible its a rarity. As well as An Irishman I'm slightly proud of early Irish music on this genre
I know how you feel, I was even younger than you when I got into Leadbelly and other blues music. It's great to know that "I'm not the only one" in the younger generation that cherishes this kind of music.
same here. loving all of the lead belly music I can find in the shops. it was great to hear songs like "goodnight irene"....it puts so much more meaning into the song knowing lead belly wrote it.
the 1970's film sucked. I would love to see a remake of it and I can't wait to see the documentary this year.

The leadbelly foundation is a beautiful thing and this doccumentary needs to be made!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Leadbelly is as american as apple pie and the stars and stripes. And the world needs to hear his story.
