I watched this in school and this exact film had the whole of act 5 scene 1? where is it where the doctor talks to the lady before Lady macbeth goes "yet heres a spot"???
see that what she get for trying to be sneaky and devious. should of never convinced macbeth to kill Duncan. silly Lady Macbeth tricks are for kids. lol. jk. love Shakespeare.
I love how everyone is commenting on the nudity/pubic hair (they didn't have Venus yet people so if you were going to actually make this realistic then yes she'd have something down there!)
But onto the more pressing comment ohmifuckinggod she must be the absolute BEST Lady Macbeth ever! Her expressions, the trembling, the way she chose to punctuate and deliver the lines amazing!!!!
@hellomoto115 what about the ending is disgusting? or do you mean the ending of the whole film, when the head gets chopped off? i can't see anything that would be disgusting about the end of this scene.
@silvereye27 What do you mean "To prove a point?" Personally, I think the nudity is merely verisimilitude. They didn't exactly have feety-pajamas back then; back then, people slept, more often than not, in the nude.
Unless I'm missing something (which is totally possible), I'm not sure what point was needing to be proven.
@silvereye27 Its not proving any point. In those times, they slept naked. In the play the servant says that she woke up and threw on her nightgown, meaning that she was nude while she was sleeping. so that is just how they slept
It's real interesting to me how Macbeth and Lady Macbeth both change their personalities completely as the story goes on. Lady Macbeth used to be the one with the guts and evil cunning and now she is reduced to nothing but insanity while her husband is also crazed, but is muc hmore fearsome and ruthless now than before. Shakespeare was a great writer and this movie is pretty good at telling his story. Francesca Annis is breathtaking in this.
@balrog13571: Interesting observation, although I think Shakespeare is much more ambiguous as to how ruthless Macbeth becomes.
For me it all comes down to how you play the 'out burnt candle' speech. On the one hand, you can play it angrily, as a war cry like "I know I'm doomed but f*** it"; he is beyond the point of caring, even about his wife.
On the other hand, you can play it sadly, like he realises his mistakes all along and collapses. Lady Macbeth drove him to do those murders; the murder of Lady Macduff was what she would have wanted to happen in the circumstances. Now he has no-one left to help him and he starts to break down. Hence his comments about not wanting to fight Macduff in their final scene together.
But hey, both and all opinions are valid, that's just the way I see it :)
Kenneth Tynan confirms this as Polanskis intention: there is something particularly vulnerable and pathetic about a nude woman wandering around a cold castle (17). She seems very fragile, beset with madness, and is in stark contrast to Macbeth, whose confidence is almost overwhelming.
"Lady Macbeth in a guilt-induced sleepwalk, and she is naked, there is a degree of emotional identification with her being stripped of her guile, her pretentions, and being viewed so objectively by the doctor and the nurse.
she's supposed to be washing her hands as if she had blood on them. i found it weird too. it was kinda sudden but then i remembered that it was her that got macbeth to do her bidding of killing king duncan
Why has it missed out half of act 5 scene 1?

There is a wonderful essay by Peter Balderstone:
"Lady Macbeth in a guilt-induced sleepwalk, and she is naked, there is a degree of emotional identification with her being stripped of her guile, her pretentions, and being viewed so objectively by the doctor and the nurse.
