  • Ruffian has come back from her grave, but then she was raced back to it... Rip Girl.

  • she didnt break her leg!

    her ankle dis located!

  • There should be much more tributes to this Sweet filly, then Barbaro! He gets way to much sympathy just because he won the K Derby! His injury was nothing compared to hers, her ankle was dislocated so badly there was virtually no chance of survival. Barbaro...had laminitis.

So to all the Obsessed Barbaro fans, just let the dang horse Rest In Peace! Ugh, Atleast he got to live out the rest of his life in peace...

  • @Sarahthesullivann Agree...Poor Pine Island

  • Happy Birthday, sweet girl.

  • This video is a beautiful tribute to Pine Island. You choice music is beautiful and heartwrenching. It makes me tear up everytime I watch it. I was not a fan of this filly as it was so scary to watch this crooked baby run . . . . . . you knew at some point in her career she would break down. So sad . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Again Carly, this tribute is so lovely. Thank you.

  • Again I am in tears . . . . . this is without a doubt the most beautiful tribute to Pine Island. Thank you so much Carly!!!

  • * absolutly

  • abolutly gorgous !!! Love her

  • such a beautiful filly!

  • great video for a warrior princess..

  • i loved this horse she was a champion !!!

  • 2006 was a crappy year first barbaro then pine island then in 2007 george washington then 2008 eight bells so tradgic so many great horses who have fallen may they run together in heaven

  • what is the song absolutly beautiful

  • She was the sweetest, most honest.

  • she was really good filly/mare. i respected her. <3

  • hey can i use this clip?

  • Its still hard to believe she's gone...she was so young

  • Like a phanton jet...she was I love your work, I really appriciate how you bring the great ones to life

  • Beautiful horse... What was with her colour? Did she had some skin condition? Somewhere she is "green" or brown or........ Like a Ruffian......... Great girls....

  • she was dark bay, dark brown

  • It's really sad how much these horses are so heavily inbred. The racing industry is just asking for frailty. Pine Island was double bred Northern Dancer, double bred Mr. Prospector, and triple bred Native Dancer. It all comes at a price.

What makes it even more sad was that she really was a sweet mare. Some espn guys went to see her and she popped her head out of her stall and just stood there, wanting to get pet. Not at all bitter or mean like some racers. She would've been a good kids horse

  • Its the Mr. Prospector line that does it...the horse had weak ankles and he passed it to his offspring......

  • wrong again!!!

  • what?

  • YOU have bad luck? You sick pig.

  • i ment that my luck apparently spread to the horse

  • sry my english isn´t good but i love these horses and the most popular racehorses lost their lif it´s so sad i´m german and i lover barbaro and ruffian

  • r.i.p pine island

  • Too, sad. So many horses loose their lives on the race track, other's aren't sa unfourtuneate. Some getr injured, but can be saved, suchy as Russel's Surprise (Missy) an not very well known, thouroghbred who injured her leg and could race no longer. She now lives in NS, in a stall next to Mistic Jazzy Joke, one of the many horses from the movie, Virginia's run. Most of the problems with reacers though, is that their bones aren't fully developed before they're raced, making them delecate.

  • She had so much heart, a hug loss.

  • I'm a big fan of the Phipps Stable - I was sad to see her go down that day.

The year before they had Pleasant Home put in such an amazing effort in the Distaff, amazing how things change in one year

  • Very moving video... she looks like she was sane and quiet and gentle. What a sad loss ... I taped the BC that day but never could bring myself to watch this race and see her breakdown.

  • I know I was looking up Ruffian and Pine Island on google and i compared the 2 pics. and I coudn't tell the difference! They said that Fleet Indian's injury ended her career but she raced this year in the breeders cup and she won!

  • No she didn't!

  • I could swear she did!

  • oh, Wait that was Indian Blessing! It was the juevinnile! but i swear it was her!

  • Haha, yeah Fleet Indian retired immediately after that.

  • Do you know how bad the injury was/

At least she wasn;t euthinized(I wish Pine Islands injury wouldnt have been that bad!

  • I don't know off the top of my head, you'll have to look it up.

  • I just did a video on Pine Island and im not one to brag but it's pretty good.

  • very true i guess u r right... is it me or are alot of horses dying in the 21st century? i dont know very many who died in the 20th just seems fishy we have lost alot of horses in the past couple years...

  • RIP PINE ISLAND

  • she was black, just like ruffian, it is always the fillys the champion fillys, ruffian , go for wand, pine island and mariahs storm was close to death... who will be next? Rags to Riches is out for the season just like ruffian was in her 1st year of racing...

  • I can think of many more fillies who lived. And many colts who died.

  • what happended to fleet indian. i remember it but not much about it.poor pine island i love her soo much

  • Can't remember crying so much.

  • Stunning tribute to a fallen hero.

  • OMG! Beautiful song! Info??

  • Wishing you Were Somehow Hear Again - Phantom of the Opera

  • Thanx!

  • SHES MY 3RD FAV RACE HORSE!

  • Carly, do you have footage of her breakdown? I haven't seen any of it other than in stills. I've not been able to find much on it, like if she just took a bad step or if it was something else. Just curious... lovely tribute to a lovely girl. You do it right, as always.

  • It was a bad step. I remember seeing to footage, I don't have it, but it was a bad step.

  • I was there at the rail at Churchill. She changed leads coming out of the first turn and broke down. It was awful. The outriders raced to her side. Everyone in the Trackside Village was devastated including me. The mood changed to somber for the rest of the races. It was heartbreaking to see her beautifully paraded by just minutes earlier. I remember one gentleman commenting during the walk over that "she looked just like Ruffian." Unfortunately, she did.

  • I was there too. I took her picture in the post parade. I bet on Fleet Indian though. She was also injured in that race. The ambulance took forever to get her. It was a few sections away from me, but I didn't want to look. We didn't know that Pine Island went down.

  • I saw your comment, and Ruffian and Pine Island look so much alike! So I looked it up... and Native Dancer (Ruffian's Grandsire) was also Pine Island's GreatGreatGreatGrandsire. I wasn't surprised when I saw this...

  • Answer to DanielSong39- 2006 Breeders Cup at Churchhill Downs.

  • Everybody says she looks like Ruffian. Yes, I agree 100%. But, Ruffian was a queen. Pine Island, only a princess. I guess God made another Ruffian, but she was only a princess. Its not fair how this princess had to dye like queen.

  • She does look like Ruffian.Ruffian is my all time favorite.Good job with the vid.I almost cried remembering those heroes.T-T

  • She looks a bit like Ruffian.. and she too broke her leg. It happens way too often to the great, and to the not so great too. R.I.P Pine Islnad, gorgeus filly.

I love the music, what song is this?

  • Wishing you were somehow here again - from the Phantom of the Opera

  • Where is the race?

  • Differant track every year. That year it was Churchill Downs.

  • Yes, he did

  • How sad, riding both Barbaro and Pine Island--they both broke down. :( Maybe Barbaro and Pine Island hooked up beyond the rainbow bridge ;)

  • BUT, In the Breeders' Cup, Edgar rode the winner, Round Pond

  • i've wondered the same thing.

  • I was at the BC. Pine Island by the TSV on the way to the paddock. I bet on Round Pound, her trainer, Mike Matz. Oldsters commented Pine Island looked like Ruffian. Everyone around was devastated at the announcement of her euthanization. It darkened the race for those in attendance. I watched the recording at home. I was glad that Churchill Downs had enough class to simply announce the tragedy and express sympathy. ESPN hammered on the gruesome event.

  • I love Round Pond. Followed her for years.

  • Carly, I've seen your videos on Barbaro and I think you did a Ruffian and Go for Wand video, too. You always do them with such taste. I was 11 when I saw Ruffian go down on NBC. I remember my mom turning the TV off right after it happened because I was crying. I've seen Pine Island around and noted how much she looked like Ruffian. Her breakdown was not only horrifically tragic, it was eerie. Gazelle-like black fillies with white stars must be both blessed and cursed. What a horrible loss.

  • Wait...Edgar Prado rode this filly?

  • I think Fernando Jara did. He went on to ride Bernardini in the classic, I think.

  • Poor girl!! The filly equivalent of Barbaro--sadly forgotten.

The video is depressing, though, maybe you should have celebrated her life or at least put up a more come-to-terms sad song.

  • I was saying goodbye. This was made 3 days later.

  • Great mare. Didnt she break her leg during the Breeders'Cup? She does look alot like Ruffian.

  • she reminds me of ruffian, even looks like her too

  • Most tragic 30 dollars I ever made. Thank you for a tribute, and I drew my own tribute for her and Fleet Indian...

  • The look on Edgars face after the race, that was painful. Poor girl on the coverage it looked like she tripped as it didnt show you her properly going down, so i didnt know what happend until after it said that her and Fleet Indian had broken down, it was awful

  • They showed it after...

  • Nice tribute for Pine Island... may she rest in peace.

  • My heart broke that day- I had a very hard time watching the rest of the BC!! We miss you so much PI!!

    Thanks for the Vido!!

  • Thank you for sharing her, and for providing a place where many can voice grief and opposition to what happens to so many race horses.

  • Thanks for the video. She was an awesome filly, and the Phipps continue to grieve as if they have lost a child. Thank you for the fitting tribute. Too many racehorse deaths. Support Polytrack.

  • Oh, dear. How many more times will we have to endure this? How many more lovely, gallant creatures will lose their lives because we cannot find a way to prevent these breakdowns? Will we always run our horses no matter the cost?

  • I didn't know much about her before the Distaff, but have learned so much of her since (I live in the UK). What a wonderful heart and a beautiful girl. Thanks so much for the video.

  • Pine Island was gorgeous..she stood out at the Breeder's Cub and performed in her glory...I will never forget you Pine..

  • Great job, Carly, thanks for putting it together. I get a little angry when I hear people say what a great Breeders' Cup Day it was, great races, great payoffs, etc. If they don't all come back home....then it wasn't a good Breeders' Cup Day at all. RIP gallant filly, forever three years old :-(

  • Beautiful music, thanks for the video. She was a sweet filly. I'll miss her greatly.

  • she was my favorite filly..i know what you mean by you don't have the heart to describe her..she was awsome and i'll never forget her..this story is so much like go for wand's.

oh and is this song by charlotte church? i think my dad has this CD

  • "Wishing you where somehow here again" - Emmy Roasum (spelling?) from the movie Phantom of the Opera. =-)

  • ohhh maybe thats where i heard it haha sounds like charlotte church
