Really, it was a technical oversight. The plane was converted to Turbines and the gust control was interlocked to the original piston engine linkage. It was never removed during the conversion. The manual gust lock was removed as usual but the throttle interlock was not. That was a test flight. If you think this is bad, you should study C-130 crashes. All kinds of fatal crashes involving the failure of a minuscule part at the worst possible time. Usually, parts of the control linkages.
Get out of your bed room and off your computer games once in a while. There's a thing outside which normal people often refer to as "the real world." It's a place where actual accidents happen with actual test flights and real people really die.
No. Wait. Maybe you couldn't handle such a thing as the real world.
You might as well go back to your games.
(I've worked in the aerospace industry for longer than you're been alive if your profile is correct)
I've seen so many crashes exactly the same, big plane, impossible maneuver with very low altitude, If anyone can answer, what were the pilots thinking? they must had some kind of an illusion!
What a shame, that Gimli was the site where 69 passengers were saved by the heroic actions taken by the crew of AC143 almost nine years earlier. Clearly, these widely separated incidents involved pilots of widely separated quality.
WOW cameraman, you could have at least stopped to call the police or gone over to help, I mean I know they all died but still you could've done something else besides film it and state how "it's all over"
@Lucasdeboer Na you wrong that accident was maybe for the slats or stabilizar config. No for the pilot error lol. FIrst learn aviation and then u can say stupids coments.
If the elevators were locked how did they get the nose up so high and so fast? If this is real who was filming? And if this is a bullshit version of the real crash you should have your nuts cut off.
@madisonelectronic - The nose got up so high and so fast - BECAUSE THE ELEVATORS WERE LOCKED AND THE PILOT COULDN'T PUSH THEM DOWN. What's so hard to understand?
@JBofBrisbane If the trim is set (and only an idiot would try flyng if they could not set the trim in preflight) your nose will not rise like that unless you deliberately rotate. And if you check the weather that day it was CAVU (ceiling and visibility unlimited). I see lots of clouds.
@madisonelectronic Yes it's "real". In 1992 handheld VCRs - even some expensive ones were not very high quality especially with a cheap tape. This version could be a 3rd or even 4th generation knock-off of the original so yeah it's terribly grainy, but it's obviously real footage.
The filmer was so shocked at what he saw (cognitive dissonance) he simply lost control of the camera for a split second as he was probably was "ducking for cover" - human nature. But the isn't spliced or 'doctored'.
@madisonelectronic You know what shut up and get a life! Who fusses that this is fake when the creator only said take off gone wrong, not this is real. Just watch the damn video and shut your ungrateful ass up!
@madisonelectronic The elevators got locked in the up position dumbass. It is a real crash, and you obviously are too much of a noob to the world to have ever seen magnetic tape.
Doop, deee, doooop, deeee, dooooo (the plane rolls on the runway then lifts off! "Hey Ralph what does this lever do, crank" Uhhh Joe that is the abort lever now we are screwed. Prepare to meet your maker Joe! Uhh sorry Ralph, uhhh!
"I cannot believe it." .... I can. It almost looked like he intentionally stalled the aircraft to commit suicide. I'm not a pilot but even I know that he stalled the plane... not enough speed for that kind of maneuver.
To those of you who think this is fake: If you really think it's fake, YOU'RE WRONG. And I can prove it. Google FAA Accidents" and search the date on the video: August 27, 1992. The crash is listed there on the FAA's website and has all the information about the plane, the airport, the victems and why the plane crashed.
@84velo - Uh, you're wrong. It's not fake and I can prove it. Google "FAA Accidents" and search the date of this video: August 27, 1992 on the FAA's website. The crash is listed there and has all the information about the plane, the airport, the victems, why the plane crashed and more. (Be sure and write back to tell everyone you were wrong. ;)
RIP.. terrible accident, i heard about this some months ago. control locks for elevator not removed before take off causing the high rate of climb followed by the stall turn & crash. once it had stalled nothing could save them from such a low altitude.
The control locks for the elevator were not removed before flight. Always do your pre-flight checks EACH and EVERY time before flight; mundane, routine and boring as you might think they are. Oopsie.
@jizzmonger PT6's. Indeed. Great aircraft, an awful tragedy :( I had it on advisement that the elevator control chocks (or locks) were not removed before flight. Judging from the video *gasp* it sure looks like elevator up>plane goes up>elevator stuck in up> plane begins stall> wing loses lift> stall> roll>game over. What a nightmare! I can't stress enough the importance to always, always do a thorough preflight each and every time. Eek!
@ThatCat They did remove the gust locks. During the conversion to Turbines, the technicians/engineers never removed the interlocks to the original throttle linkages to the piston engines. They apparently bound up underway. Most people only repeat the superficial explanation which would indicate that they didn't remove the standard gust locks. Of course, unlike most people on Youtube, I could be wrong,anyway.... I have researched this and the more detailed info re-affirms this, though.
@ThatMiserableCat SO THIS COULDVE BEEN AVOIDED,WHOA!! SOMETIMES PEOPLE SAY IT WAS THIER TIME,BUT I BELIEVE YOU CAN RUSH DEATH,BY SIMPLE MISTAKES LIKE THIS.GOD BLESS!!
The aircraft took off for a test flight for a turbine-engine conversion programme. It climbed steeply, rolled to the right and crashed in a nose-down, rightwing-low attitude.
@goodspeed777 - Good for you. You're the only other person besides me who thought to look up the accident on the FAA's website. And there are still people saying this crash was faked. Not that it'll harm anyone. I doubt the kids father who is in the vid comes on Youtube...
@graysamu213 It is disconcerting how hard it can be these days to tell diff between real and fake. This one looks fake in a few ways but in fact is a real crash with real fatalities. Be careful before you sound off.
Man, it is scary to see so many dimwitted posts by so many dimwitted 12 year olds who will grow up to be - yes, thats right! - dimwitted adults... this accident happened - read the report.
We were shown this video in USAF flight training. It was shown to teach us the important use of checklists and the potentially fatal consequences if you don't. This crash was in fact due to the control lock being left in. They found pieces of it in the pilots' wrist from trying to remove it. In addition - not sure if this is true or not but our instructor told us that the father of the co-pilot was filming this. Can you imagine??
This video is no fake. And the "everyone makes mistakes" comment. That was NOT pilot error. For a pilot to cause that he'd have to be a WWII kamikaze pilot. That was a failure in the aircraft's design.
No fake I thing, It seams that the gust locks were still installed. Date: 27 AUG 1992 Time: 10:20 Type: de Havilland Canada DHC-4T Caribou Operator: NewCal Aviation Registration: N400NC Msn / C/n: 240 Year built: 1965 Crew: 3 fatalities / 3 on board Location: Gimli, MB (Canada)

i like how the cameraman didnt seem concerned at all does anyone know what happened because that is very odd way to go down he had to have a heart attack or something because or airplane malfunction because he would to have been pulling back hard on the contols
If this is real then it's pretty damn scary. it's horrific enough as it is but I honestly had a dream where a plane took off and immediately crashed exactly like in this vid, hence why I looked it up on here :S
My heart goes out to anyone involved and their families.

If this is real then it's pretty damn scary. it's horrific enough as it is but I honestly had a dream where a plane took off and immediately crashed exactly like in this vid, hence why I looked it up on here :S
My heart goes out to anyone involved and their families.
