It is right that Louis Jordan recorded "Keep..." before Little Richard even though that Mr. Penniman "claims" his right to have kind of co-written it which aint true..keep on rocking Little Richard. Little Richards label says "R. Penniman"
That ass-hole stole chuck berry's thunder! He dominated the show, chuck berry didn't sing at all in keep a' knockin, but LR sang through the whole show.
Fact: "Keep a Knockin'"... was first recorded in 1939 by Louis Jordan and the Tympany Five in a style known today as "Jump Blues". Little Richard's first hit in 1956 or 7. He cut the lyric that said "I can tell you been drinkin' gin" because they were marketing the song to a teenage audiance.
no doubt these guys rock, and yes rock n roll was build off of some of thier work, but i wish they could at least write some new songs for once in 50 years. Altho, none were big hits, in 1951, Little Richard (Penniman) began recording jump blues records for RCA Camden. His father was shot to death while he was performing at a club on January 12, 1952. In October 1953, he began recording with Peacock Records. These Records were released each year during 1951–54. <--From Wikipedia --- So, Actually, Little Richard did start recording Before Elvis..
@DallasPix Yes Little Richard did start recording before Elvis, but GOSPEL & some BLUES ONLY, prior to 1955 Little Richard didn't record or sing anything even remotely close to Rock and roll. He can't. Elvis never wrote a song in his life, and you can't be the king of something you have to be spoon fed by other people. Chuck on the other hand penned some of RnR's greatest classics, he was a brilliant guitarist too.
@Einsteinbomb FYI NO it doesn't. The only valid definition of Rock and Roll, is the definition Allan Freed gave to Rock and Roll, since he is the 1st to use the term to describe music, and his definition is the joining of country with blues. Therefore Rock and Roll is not entirely in blues and gospel. .
@Einsteinbomb I never said Rock and Roll doesn't have roots in the blues, I'm saying it's roots are equally in the blues as it is in country, and not entirely in the blues like you stated. .
Alan Freed came up with the name of Rock and Roll on the notion of it being a Blues, Gospel, and R&B composite. Country also played a role in Rock and Roll as anyone who have listened to Hank Williams will tell you.
@Einsteinbomb Allan Freed did not come up with the name, the name has been used since the 1800's as a nautical term to describe the way the ships would said on rough seas. Allan Freed is the first to use the term to describe music on his radio show. And country didn't play just a role, it played an EQUAL role with blues. Even Chuck Berry has said, he was far more influenced by country music than he was by blues. Maybeline is an old country song. He played country music before Rock & Roll.
"Allan Freed did not come up with the name, the name has been used since the 1800's as a nautical term to describe the way the ships would said on rough seas."
LOL. When Alan Freed coined the *phrase* Rock and Roll in 1952 I really doubt it had anything to do with the boating industry or anything in relation to boats whatsoever. He based the *phrase* Rock and Roll on the WJW Show as a mixture of music from country to blues as his show was primarily R&B and Blues.
"Even Chuck Berry has said, he was far more influenced by country music than he was by blues. Maybeline is an old country song. He played country music before Rock & Roll."
Really? Because everyone from Little Richard, to Elvis, to John Lennon, and Michael Jackson said they were more influenced by the Soul and Classical atmosphere of early Rock. It wasn't until later that Rock became a real jam that exploded in the 60's.
@Einsteinbomb Rock and Roll started, not when black singers sang blues or jump blues, but when white southern teens, in the early 50's, combined the country songs they heard during the day with the black blues songs they would sneak hearing at night. And it was the rhythm and passion of those blue songs with the beat of country that formed RnR. Most RnR from 52 to 55 are far more influenced by country beat then a blues beat.
"Rock and Roll started, not when black singers sang blues or jump blues, but when white southern teens, in the early 50's, combined the country songs they heard during the day with the black blues songs they would sneak hearing at night."
Many could dispute this claim since considering that Rock and Roll started in the mid 1940's not early 50's, son. The 1950's is where it became more mainstream with Little Richard and Elvis. And FYI not one race started Rock and Roll.
@Einsteinbomb Ray Charles sang mostly Blues & Rhythm & Blues until 1959. Songs like "The Mess Around" or "I've Got A Woman" from the early to mid 50's are all blues songs, Then in 1959 he branched out into Country and Rock and Roll.
@Einsteinbomb I'm not saying Rhythm and Blues didn't contribute to Rock and Roll, but R&B is not Rock and Roll. And his early songs were not in anyway shape or form Rock and Roll, even at the time they were not considered Rock and Roll. They were at the time and to this day all blues songs. R&B is Rock and Rolls mother, but it wasn't until it mated with country did it produce Rock and Roll. Just like you are = your mother and father RnR is = blues and country.
You friend need to understand that what constitutes as Rock and Roll is very broad. Ray Charles had all the makings of Rock and Roll when he first started out as did Little Richard's first two singles in 1952. If you truly still believe Elvis was the first person to incorporate Rock and Roll into mainstream you should listen to Little Richard's first singles. I think we can both agree that Rock and Roll is a mixture of music.
@Einsteinbomb I have every song Little Richard ever recorded including Rubber Ducky on Sesame Street lol. I have Every Song Ray Charles ever did. I collect old songs, my collection is now way over 100,000 songs all from the 1950's. If there is a song or singer or group from the 1950's that I do not know, from any genre, they were so insignificant no one will know them.
Look up Little Richard's Taxi Blues. Many experts have accredited as the first Rock and Roll song of the 1950's, not the first though. Although it's not quite the best Little Richard song it was prior to Elvis. Good to know you collect songs. I have a nice collection of vinyl records from everything from Thelonious Monk and Elvis to The Beatles and Michael Jackson.
@Einsteinbomb I like Taxi Blues, but its a blues song not a Rock n Roll song. And you can hear how it and songs like that influenced RnR, but its not RnR, just like Ike Turners Rocket 88 and I forgot their name now but 60 minute man are not RnR, but are blues songs. 1953 Honey Hush Joe Turner a blues song, '56 Johnny Burnettes version Rock n Roll. '51 Train Kept A-Rollin' Tiny Bradshaw blues, Johnny Burnets version RnR
@Einsteinbomb The definition I'm using is the definition given by the man that coined the phrase, and since he coined the phrase its is his and only his definition that is valid. Little Richard never sang anything remotely close to Rock and Roll prior to 1955 when he recoded Tutti Frutti. And if it wasn't for Equrita there would never have been a little Ricrad, because Little Richard copied everything from him except his name.
@Einsteinbomb I luv Little Richard, no one can sing a RnR song as good as he can, well maybe bunker hill with the girl cant dance, hes what 79 now and sounds the same as he did when he was 25. like I said I have everything he ever did, but he did not sing RnR prior to '55, and he is definitely not the originator and all that he claims to be. Equrita was before him, and like I said except for coping Esquiriats name, Little Richard copied everything from him including the little mustache.
And I'm telling you Little Richard had a Rock and Roll song prior to 1955. The American Musical Association stated Little Richard first work that never became famous was a small appeal at a larger Rock and Roll visions. And, that his music was Rock and Roll in the earliest of states.
@Einsteinbomb As for Chuck Berry, unlike many black people of that time, he grew up middle class, even by white people standards. His early influences were all country, not blues, blues came later in his life, remember he is 10 years older then most of the early rockers. Prior to chuck berry getting involved in Rock and roll, he played in country bands, not blues bands. Before he sang Maybeline, he saw he could make money appealing to the new Rock and Roll music the teens were listening to.
"Before he sang Maybeline, he saw he could make money appealing to the new Rock and Roll music the teens were listening to."
Chuck Berry's "Maybeline" was in 1955. Rock was barely beginning and nobody even saw the potential in a huge Rock base until the late 1950's when RCA and other companies started signing artist left and right.
@Einsteinbomb Record wise RnR was small, in '55, but even in '55 RnR was drawing big crowds, much bigger then what he was getting playing country, and much bigger then people got playing blues. You know Chuck Berry never had a #1 song until 1972 with my ding a ling. .
Rock wasn't exactly mainstream in the early 1950's as most elders saw it as a form of rebellion on the part of the younger generation. Although by the late 1950's it became much more popular in mainstream society. Although it was during the 1960's that Rock and Roll completely dominated in the music genre. And it doesn't who has the #1 single at the time because as long as you like the music it makes no difference. Competing for the #1 spot is exactly not what music was about.
"His early influences were all country, not blues, blues came later in his life...."
Sorry friend this is wrong. Yes, Chuck Berry once upon a time played country in parts where is was very popular. But, his primary influence and his personal favorite were the blues he was playing since he was a young boy. His primary influences were blues players T-Bone Walker: he copied his style of music and his mentor was blues player Johnnie Johnson.
@Einsteinbomb Booker T and Johnnie Jonson were influences on him, but that was later. By later i don't mean his 30's, I'm talking late teens. All his first influences were all country because that's all he heard as a young boy. Like me, I'm only 31, but I fell in love with the 50's when I heard Elvis sing Hound Dog, I was 4 at the time, and I've loved the 50's ever since. Chuck Berry is the one that said the ONLY reason he went into RnR was because he knew he could make money with it.
"All his first influences were all country because that's all he heard as a young boy."
This is incorrect because it was the blues of Johnnie Johnson that dramatically influenced Chuck Berry as a boy. If you read his autobiography he states that as a young boy gospel was a profound impact on him. After he was sent to reform school he found the sound of soothing blues and jazz as an inspiration on his music in his late teen's.
@Einsteinbomb By '55, RnR was pretty much established as a music to appeal to teens and different from what came before it. '56 Blue Suede shoes becomes RnR first big hit, and I know Rock around the clock was before Blue suede shoes, but Blue Suede shoes was the 1st song o be #1 on the blues and country charts. An aside the original Rock around the clock wasn't even by Bill Hally. Another Important date in RnR was in 59 when Cliff Richard recorded Move it making it the 1st RnR song
Yes Rock and Roll was established by teens as a must listen too. Especially rebellious individuals. Although it did not hit mainstream until the late 1950's where adults found the music more appealing and the Hot 100 started playing Rock and Roll.
@Einsteinbomb It was after he heard Elvis' first record that chuck berry decided to re-write an old country song called Ida Red and called it Maybeline. Good Rocking Tonight 1947 is a blues song by Roy Brown, but after Elvis' version Roy re-recoded it again this time he did it as a Rock and Roll song. called We're rocking tonight or something like that i forgot the actual title but its same song.
"Maybellene" is accredited as being the introduction of the guitar into the Rock and Roll genre of music. "Maybellene" was an inspiration of Chuck Berry yes I agree after Ida Red but it was both Johnnie Johnson and Muddy Water not Elvis who pushed Chuck Berry to perform the feat. when he was at Chess Records in 1955. Recall Elvis recorded his first single in 1954 and wasn't as an inspiration until later into 50's when Jerry Lee Lewis got into the game.
@natagaima That is 100% false, and I am black. RnR is not black nor white, it is the combination of both. Rock and Roll was born when people started combing both white county and black blues and created something unique with roots in both cultures equally.
@natagaima To say differently is just a total misunderstanding of the history of RnR. Listen to all the early RnR covers of older blues songs, they are very different from the originals, just as the early RnR covers of countries songs are very different from their originals. In the same way you a combination of your mother and father, with similarities to both but you are unique. Blues is RnR mother Country is RnR father and together they equally made RnR.
this music is amazing but just remember there will always be one true king of rock 'n' roll and that is Elvis Presley and he didn't earn this crown for nothing!...these guys are both very solid performers though thanks for posting :)
OMG, The only thing i'm going to say, is look back in the history, and you will find out who is the Real king of rock 'n' roll!
- The only reason why Elvis was crown the king of rock n roll, because here was a WHITE guy, that could do what black people used to do, so instead of listening to the people who came op with it, you all listen to Elvis, WHy because he was white. Look at it in this way, With-out artist like chuck berry, Little Richard etc, there wouldn't have been no ELVIS
@58106584 It's funny how both Little Richard and Chuck Berry started in Rock n Roll AFTER Elvis, yet you say without Little Richard and Chuck Berry there would be no Elvis. Look at the year Maybeline was written, look at the year Tutti-Frutti was written, now look when Elvis recoded That's Alright & Blue Moon of Kentucky. I know it was a paradox.
@gittahfiend They were AFTER Elvis. Elvis recorded "That's Alright" & "Blue Moon of Kentucky" in 1954. Little Richard wrote & recorded his first RnR Song "Tutti Frutti" 1955. Chuck Berry wrote and recorded his first RnR song "Maybellene" in 1955. Now I could be wrong, but the last time I checked 1954 came BEFORE 1955.
Sorry friend Little Richard was before Elvis. Little Richard recorded for RCA Camden when he was 19 years old and was active in music since 1945. Elvis was a fan of Little Richard right before he launched his first single.
@Einsteinbomb Sorry, but you are wrong. Until mid 1955 Little Richard never sang a Rock and Roll song. It wasn't until Little Richard met Equrita, in early 1955, that Little Richard went from singing gospel to Rock and Roll. As for Elvis being a fan of Little Richard, yes he was, but prior to 1955 I doubt he ever heard of Little Richard.
Sorry to disappoint friend but you sir are incorrect. Little Richard's early incarnations of "Taxi Blues" and "Get Rich Quick" are seen as the earliest forms of Rock and Roll and classical. And FYI it was the Blues and Gospel of Little Richards work prior to Elvis' first single that inspired him. Even Elvis himself admitted Little Richard was an inspiration as did Michael Jackson and The Beatles later on.
@muclesmarinara ..uhh were talkin about rock ´n´ roll not looks and personal issues they had ...elvis is still in the top five ..but not the true king
Them and Jerry Lee are 3 of the only Forefathers of Rock and roll. My dream is to play with or at least meet them.

Einsteinbomb 9 months ago
@Einsteinbomb I have every song Little Richard ever recorded including Rubber Ducky on Sesame Street lol. I have Every Song Ray Charles ever did. I collect old songs, my collection is now way over 100,000 songs all from the 1950's. If there is a song or singer or group from the 1950's that I do not know, from any genre, they were so insignificant no one will know them.

@EbonyBunny1

@Einsteinbomb I'm stuck in the 1950's. I don't like Thadeus Monk I don't like jazz to much.

I listen to a variety of decades in music. I find the 1950's great but I like to explore more genres in different decades.
Einsteinbomb 9 months ago
@Einsteinbomb I like early to mid 60's but not much after that, unless they sound like they r from that era.
EbonyBunny1 9 months ago
@EbonyBunny1
The 1960's had great songs but the variety of music solely on Vietnam depressed me.
Einsteinbomb 9 months ago
@Einsteinbomb I like Taxi Blues, but its a blues song not a Rock n Roll song. And you can hear how it and songs like that influenced RnR, but its not RnR, just like Ike Turners Rocket 88 and I forgot their name now but 60 minute man are not RnR, but are blues songs. 1953 Honey Hush Joe Turner a blues song, '56 Johnny Burnettes version Rock n Roll. '51 Train Kept A-Rollin' Tiny Bradshaw blues, Johnny Burnets version RnR
EbonyBunny1 9 months ago
@Einsteinbomb The definition I'm using is the definition given by the man that coined the phrase, and since he coined the phrase its is his and only his definition that is valid. Little Richard never sang anything remotely close to Rock and Roll prior to 1955 when he recoded Tutti Frutti. And if it wasn't for Equrita there would never have been a little Ricrad, because Little Richard copied everything from him except his name.

@EbonyBunny1
"Little Richard never sang anything remotely close to Rock and Roll prior to 1955 when he recoded Tutti Frutti."
A true fan and admirer of Little Richard would not ever have said this. Listen to his earlier work.
Einsteinbomb 9 months ago
@Einsteinbomb I luv Little Richard, no one can sing a RnR song as good as he can, well maybe bunker hill with the girl cant dance, hes what 79 now and sounds the same as he did when he was 25. like I said I have everything he ever did, but he did not sing RnR prior to '55, and he is definitely not the originator and all that he claims to be. Equrita was before him, and like I said except for coping Esquiriats name, Little Richard copied everything from him including the little mustache.
EbonyBunny1 9 months ago
@EbonyBunny1
And I'm telling you Little Richard had a Rock and Roll song prior to 1955. The American Musical Association stated Little Richard first work that never became famous was a small appeal at a larger Rock and Roll visions. And, that his music was Rock and Roll in the earliest of states.
Einsteinbomb 9 months ago

Einsteinbomb 9 months ago
@Einsteinbomb Record wise RnR was small, in '55, but even in '55 RnR was drawing big crowds, much bigger then what he was getting playing country, and much bigger then people got playing blues. You know Chuck Berry never had a #1 song until 1972 with my ding a ling. .
EbonyBunny1 9 months ago
@EbonyBunny1

@EbonyBunny1
Einsteinbomb 9 months ago
@Einsteinbomb Booker T and Johnnie Jonson were influences on him, but that was later. By later i don't mean his 30's, I'm talking late teens. All his first influences were all country because that's all he heard as a young boy. Like me, I'm only 31, but I fell in love with the 50's when I heard Elvis sing Hound Dog, I was 4 at the time, and I've loved the 50's ever since. Chuck Berry is the one that said the ONLY reason he went into RnR was because he knew he could make money with it.
EbonyBunny1 9 months ago
@EbonyBunny1
Einsteinbomb 9 months ago
@Einsteinbomb By '55, RnR was pretty much established as a music to appeal to teens and different from what came before it. '56 Blue Suede shoes becomes RnR first big hit, and I know Rock around the clock was before Blue suede shoes, but Blue Suede shoes was the 1st song o be #1 on the blues and country charts. An aside the original Rock around the clock wasn't even by Bill Hally. Another Important date in RnR was in 59 when Cliff Richard recorded Move it making it the 1st RnR song
EbonyBunny1 9 months ago
@EbonyBunny1
Yes Rock and Roll was established by teens as a must listen too. Especially rebellious individuals. Although it did not hit mainstream until the late 1950's where adults found the music more appealing and the Hot 100 started playing Rock and Roll.
Einsteinbomb 9 months ago
@Einsteinbomb to be written and recorded by a non American.
EbonyBunny1 9 months ago
@Einsteinbomb It was after he heard Elvis' first record that chuck berry decided to re-write an old country song called Ida Red and called it Maybeline. Good Rocking Tonight 1947 is a blues song by Roy Brown, but after Elvis' version Roy re-recoded it again this time he did it as a Rock and Roll song. called We're rocking tonight or something like that i forgot the actual title but its same song.
EbonyBunny1 9 months ago
@EbonyBunny1
Einsteinbomb 9 months ago
@Einsteinbomb Actually recorded his first song in 53 not 54.

Any true rockn'roll fan knows that RnR was born from R&B which was created by africanamerican cotton farmers
natagaima 1 year ago
@natagaima That is 100% false, and I am black. RnR is not black nor white, it is the combination of both. Rock and Roll was born when people started combing both white county and black blues and created something unique with roots in both cultures equally.
EbonyBunny1 11 months ago

@au05232003

@58106584 lol thats why they call them opinions lol and ur not gonna change my viewpoint...sorry!
au05232003 1 year ago
@58106584 It's funny how both Little Richard and Chuck Berry started in Rock n Roll AFTER Elvis, yet you say without Little Richard and Chuck Berry there would be no Elvis. Look at the year Maybeline was written, look at the year Tutti-Frutti was written, now look when Elvis recoded That's Alright & Blue Moon of Kentucky. I know it was a paradox.
EbonyBunny1 11 months ago
@EbonyBunny1 They WERE before elvis.
gittahfiend 11 months ago

Einsteinbomb 9 months ago
@Einsteinbomb Sorry, but you are wrong. Until mid 1955 Little Richard never sang a Rock and Roll song. It wasn't until Little Richard met Equrita, in early 1955, that Little Richard went from singing gospel to Rock and Roll. As for Elvis being a fan of Little Richard, yes he was, but prior to 1955 I doubt he ever heard of Little Richard.
EbonyBunny1 9 months ago
@EbonyBunny1
