  • Loved the driving, nice and smooth. great watching Dino (not a Ferrarri BTW) guy get the red mist and off himself. Oh... are you running stock brakes??? you out brake EVERYONE. very commited, like I said, very smooth and nice.

  • @3lb0w The brakes are actually from an older SAAB sedan which used calipers similar to those fitted to the MGB. I use EBC RedStuff or YellowStuff pads that are specced for an MGB. Otherwise, the system at the time of this video is stock. Since then, we've upgraded to Tilton dual master cylinders with a balance bar which is a nice improvement.

  • I could watch this all day long.

  • Haha inget står i vägen för en Svensk!!

  • BTW, do you have any side views of the car? It looks like you did some sort of spyder conversion. Me like!

  • Racing with a column shifter?!! Love it!

As for the Ferrari, a 308 is worth more than most people's houses. I think he was just taking it easy on his pricey "investment" (aka toy).

  • Or "i can't drive!" "can't be beat with a ferrari!" haha SAAB love <3

  • @twofoot65 Maybe if you live in Pittsburg. 308s sell for $25-$50 USD. But I believe that was actually a Dino, yes? In which case yes, it would be worth more than a house.

  • @zapwatt That's correct, it was a Dino. One of the most beautiful Pininfarina designs to ever hit the road and a lovely sounding V6!

  • Stefan,

A SAAB, even a Sonett, isn't supposed to out run a Ferrari. :)

    Richard

  • Have any one tried tha? ;) A saab 9000 Aero is a strong competitor 92-98

  • haha händer inte så mycket där inte

  • So whats in the engine?I know v-4 engines won't wind out to 7800 rpm without spitting out the rod bearings.Chromemoly rod bolts, heavy valve springs?Come on give it up!!!

  • ARP-racing rod bolts. Stock con-rods, magnafluxed/balanced, as is the crank (gone back to a 1500 crank though) and lightened flywheel. Custom high compression pistons. Ported heads, big valves, relieved combustion chambers O-ringed for the ~12.5:1 CR. High pressure valve springs with secondary "helper" springs. Intake manifold is port matched. Solex 40PII carb. "Warm" cam that compromises a little HP for better torque. And much much more, especially as we are in the middle of a rebuild.

  • Ok,great driving,nice double clutching,the reason it's not reving very fast is that the car is in 3rd+4th gear,It's screaming,can you say chromemoly rod bolts?Red car is a ferrari 308?This is a very well driven,fast,light Saab beating a Mini?a Corvair,the green car a lister or a vette?unbelievable.

  • The low-res video makes it hard for you to identify the cars, so let me help:

1st car (blue/white that goes flying by me on the straight at the beginning) is a Maserati Tipo 61 Birdcage.

2nd is a Ferrari 250 Tour de France.

The Ferrari I dice with for a while and then skids off the end of the straight is a 246 GTS "Dino".

You got the Mini and the Corvair absolutely correct.

The final car (green one) is an Elva Courier. A rare car anywhere except at events like this on.

  • Sounds like the motor needs an aluminum flywheel or a milled down flywheel - it is winding out too slowly. The two-stroke will windout fast if you let it. Better gearing would help some.

That is why a two-stroke motorcycle is so fast and will dominate most 4 strokes with ease.

  • This Sonett, as a 1968 model, is actually a 4cylinder 4 stroke in a V configuration. It came with a 1500cc V4 but this engine has the crank from a later engine which increases displacement to 1700cc. It has a lightened flywheel but how fest it winds out is dependent on the actual power output and the roadway. The second half of the main straight on this course is uphill, so that effects things. Redline is about 7800rpm.

  • It always would grind and pop out of gear occasionally- but this being my first manual, I thought it was something I was doing.

Oh well, now I know how hard it is to find some who deals with older Saabs.

  • In the older 900s, the 2nd gear synchro is usually the most abused. Take it easy and don't hurry the shift, a 900 gearbox can't be hurried and if you are gentle with it, it will actually shift faster than if you try to force it.

There are a bunch of specialty shops that know the older SAABs, but it depends on where you live.

  • Thanks for the quick response! And yes, that is an impressive record for your car's tranny.

The reason I asked was because recently one of my synchronizer disks broke apart... destroying my transmission and clutch.

I bought a 92 900s to learn to drive a standard transmission on and in the 9 months I have owned it had put 30,000 additional miles on it. (for a total of 175,000 miles) Very enjoyable to drive.

  • I had a '92 900s for a few years. It was a great car. Today I drove my daily-driver '90 900 SPG with 320,000 miles on it.

  • Sweet & Sweet. I need to get my Saab to the track.

Has your transmission given you any problems?

  • Thanks Knothole,

No, the transmission has been very good. We ran this transmission for about 15 years on the street and 4 years in autocross before dedicating it to the track.

Recently we disassembled it because of a pressure plate failure. When we inspected the gears they all showed wear but were still perfectly serviceable. We did have some cracks on the differential ring gear however, so it would have needed replacing very soon. Still, thats a LOT of hard running on a standard gearbox.

  • I knew that red car was going to overshoot turn one... just a matter of time. Too much top end speed & not enough driver skill.

    Nice driving.

  • Awesome racing, you take really dangerous looking turns on the inside though. What generation Sonett is it?

  • Thanks ooThEgg...

This is a '68 Sonett V4... Except with the roof cut off!

  • Nice driving!

What's the bhp and weight of that Sonett?

  • Thanks KG...

We haven't had this motor on a dyno or the car on the scales yet but best guess... 115bhp and 1550lbs.

  • where do u live, ive been on vir north south full and patriot

  • Hello "diesellover". I come down to VIR from Delaware.
