Dont forget the Kinks went an incredibly brief phase of love songwriting until Ray found his feet as a songwriter in about late 65- early 66. They are famous for writing about anything but love. Take this song for example - I'd hardly say this was about love, and there are many kinks songs like this. Ray is famous for his lyrical originality - he wrote about English life and subtle social commentaries, and even his own personal experiences - groundbreakers which changed the course of rock music.

I love this song! Ray's lyrics were probably the best in 60's British rock (yes even better than Lennon's and Dylan was American so he doesn't count.) He was always so sarcastic and witty I love it.
