i know people think the old man was being mean, but i don't see it that way. i think he felt protective of her, and possibly that he didn't trust his son's motives. if his son got her pregnant, in that time, that would not only be the end of all her dreams but she would also be an outcast if he didn't marry her.

with the horse training, he was encouraging her - she's stubborn, he didn't want her to give up. his son was basically babying her. if you fall off the horse, get back on, try again.
