The title is just an allusion, but I wonder and I'd like to ask this question to the director of the movie. "Why Brazil?" I do not think to have a Brazilian song is not (or maybe not ) a reasonable explanation. Well, if it is the case a film needs a reasonable explanation to exist...
BTW, the name of the song is Watercolor of Brazil.
@00litag00 HAHH you're joking, right? This movie has nothing to do with Brazil, its called that way because of an old song with the same name...This movie is not about that country.omg
Frankly, I got disappointed by this movie. It's not I didn't get it, it's just I was expecting a greater commitment with a satyrical portrait of a bureaucratic society, but I think they opted to deviate the plot to a more classical, individual hero action drama. The plot strays itself in it's own loopholes, and forgets the important: to make a real criticism of a grey, boring, monotonous, bureaucratic society. This film left me with the sensation that it was nothing I haven't seen before.
@ Valentino. Thanks for the reply. Oh, yes...the them is a classic in Brazil, but I am still wondering the relationship between song (Watercolor of Brazil) and Title and film theme. Though...I love it!
@debireis Well in the commentary terry says the idea for the film came from him thinking about a smog covered beach and a man there staring out to the ocean trying to look beyond the bleak landscape with a radio picking up songs like brazil.
I love this film, but I dont understand why people think its so "complex" or even "surreal", the storyline is pretty straight forward...it just happens to be set in Terry Gilliam's twisted vision of the future...and it surely doesnt need all this pretentious rambling to justify how good it is....
just rewatching this on film4. i saw brazil 15yrs ago and loved it. i watch it now and it looks like the near future. good bit at start - poster on the wall "suspicion breeds confidence".
@tromuniapp "You should watch natural born killers.....If you're looking for trippy."
Except that NBK sucks, Brazil is brilliant. So, if you're looking for sucky AND trippy, then, by all means, watch NBK... or just about any late 60s French "Avant Garde" film.
Every time I have seen this movie, there is the intense feeling of being confined and totally unable to escape. Very well done, amazing movie. Great comdedic bits as well as great absurdity.
It's a brilliant and challenging film. Like other films that require you to pay attention and engage your brain (Blade Runner and Citizen Kane for example) it is not everyone's cup of tea, but I personally love it.
@johnthekeys oh yes, it's so fucking challenging to watch a slapstick love story for 2 hours with many wasted sets, Brazil is a truly awful film, and it's fans are complete idiots for thinking this wanna-be 1984 drivel is any good
Also, anyone else actually want that gift he got for xmas from his mother? (That little doohicky with the plunger that lands on either 'YES' or 'NO'?)
It's certainly dark comedy, and it's quite surreal. I grant it's not for everyone, but to anyone who thinks "it sucks", well, I will only state that you're attempting to approach it like it was a photograph and not a painting. Not everything therein is "real" or intended to be. It is attempting to bring out the horror of extremes an industrial, ultrabureaucratic society is capable of, as a cautionary tale. It is a dark-comic version of "1984", and it does that very, very well.
I don't say that i don't like the film, the characters are good, and it looks so aesome, but the problem is that i didn,t understood the plot. Well i will watch it one more time
Not everything you see is either the truth of what is happening or even a close approximate of it, it's him either fantasizing about being somewhere else or doing something heroic to escape, or being involved in something heroic to end the madness.
Realize that Gilliam is basically doing 1984 in most ways, but there are elements of fantasy and dream because the central character is so unable to force-fit himself into the rigid senseless confines of his mileau, so he seeks some form of escape from the insanity that surrounds him.
There is a strongly surrealistic element to it, yes, and that means if you try and make everything fit rationally then you will have issues. You will find this in most Gilliam works, BTW, so if you cannot find yourself liking this one, possibly his best, you probably won't enjoy anything of his.
One of the more beautiful, subtle jokes of this, for example, is the device they hand him when he gets promoted, the "decisionmaker", highlighting the extreme arbitrariness of the place in which they all live. At the point you first see that, if you really, really Get It, you understand the horror of this place, and you should start laughing hard at it.
i paused the movie at 1:28 and thought, this movie looks fun. downloaded it, watched it. well... i should have seen the whole trailer^^ good movie, just didn't expect THAT
if i hadnt of read the info for this movie on google i wouldnt understand whats going on. lol. this looks like some crazy 80's movie that only ppl on acid would understand. lol.
I don't think you have to be on acid -- and, frankly, I don't think I'd WANT to be on acid for a dark movie of any kind, even a dark comedy -- but it does fit the surrealism of it.
See my series of comments above regarding the nature of the movie, and why it is *right* that it be surreal...

@BinaryDood Thats movie would be better if Satnley Kubrick were alive when decided to film it
