late 70's buses certainly weren't fast...but they could go up a hill without putting it into 3rd and could go 70-75 on the highway. my uncle still has his '78. old VW's are slow...but they don't have to be as slow as everyone stereotypes.
I call those Guys Billy Bad Ass, They have several things in common, Its got to be a 4x4 Pickup, usually extended cab, usually with a tennesee gofaster exhaust on it, and they will ride your ass no matter how fast you are going and pass, legal or not at the first opportune time. They all have one thing in common, they drive like a holes. First big snow around here you see a bunch of billy bad ass trucks sitting at the body shop with the front ends smashed or in the ditch.
I would like to see that piece of shit 4x4 pull over on the side of the road. Drop there engine and rebuild it. Put it back in and keep going. Got to tow that thing to the shop and spend thousands of dollars fixing it. The thing about vw's- Everything in them is rebuildable. I sold my 71 Blazer and got a 73 super bug. It don't hurt like it did to fill it up. Now I can go for drives and have fun. Not worries about gas. 30 MPG VS 9 . My first love was a 66 when I was 18.
I've had four vw vans and currently own a skoolie which is even slower. I do my best to get over when I can but I don't get too anxious about other peoples impatience. Not my problem.
@NarleyDude07 i dont have the faintest idea what that was you PM'd me , but i was deadset serious !! . this is a cool vid , i too own a kombi and i do a lot of travelling around australia - the kombi lifestyle is way better than generic travelling - ie big ugly 4WD and a 5 star resort caravan . . . kombi cruisin for the win !! - i dont think ill be feeding my brother to the crocodiles anytime soon though . . .
see u later aligator !!!!!!!! i sing with Agnetha ......theres no other place in this world were i rather would be ...... my honey honey VW no matter !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
see u later aligator !!!!!!!! i sing with Agnetha ......theres no other place in this world were i rather would be ...... my honey honey VW no matter !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
well they may be in a hurry, but they'll only get there 30 seconds earlier, angry, stressed, tense, and in a hurry to go somewhere else. I look forward to getting my VW.
@theswatter just drive your own, let them be morons, you are having a good time in your bus, something they will never understand in their rubbish gmc.
A Volkswagen is fun to drive fast or slow. They are even fun when parked in a garage. I would rather have a broken down Volkswagen with a missing engine then that WaterCooler that passed your nice Bay Window. Keep on driving!
My 76 bus can fly with the rest of them but at 16 to the gallon it gets a little juicy so l choose to cruise at 50 and enjoy the views. At the end of the day we bus drivers arrive in style. Nice vid too.
I have a 74 westy 100% original.. I have been all over B.C. Canada. Year round daily driver and I would not trade him for anything. It is not the fastest but will get you to any destination. I can not wait for camping season.
I bought Dante here in Victoria. Toured him all over the U.S., part of Mexico, around BC and across the prairies to Manitoba. The only time he ever seriously broke down was when I did a valve adjustment myself and screwed it up. Other than that...sold ride, good memories and a comfy snooze. BTW, I bought my bus in Feb and was camping the very next weekend....what are you waiting for? Camping season is year round in BC. :)
is that an asi camper? I have an asi riveria I love it more than my own mother. I like all the comments. slow is good, yeah they'll go 85 but you wont get a lot of miles out of it like that. mines a 2.0 L-jetronic and I have found it to get better gas milage at 65 compared to 75. also burns and leaks less oil plus runs cooler. fyi they still make the bay window in brazil, it's water cooled and has a radiator on the front.
i love how your at the front and the windsheild is like a bubble. you see everything. i love driving my camperbus everday to school. going the speed limit is redicuilous for some people
Depends on the bus, the engine, what direction the wind is blowing, whether you're listening to the Grateful Dead or Judas Priest. There are lots of factors. :) I can roll at 75 too but that doesn't mean that every gas guzzling pickup truck and SUV is going to ride behind my loaf of bread. They gotta pass anything and most do.
True enough. I look at it like watching a movie. You've got this great big windshield in front of you that's like a movie screen. Your ride is so slow that not only should you take the back roads, you want to. You end up seeing so much more than those who race through the world of lane changes and horns on a freeway. Enjoy the ride and msg me with some pics if you can. Would love to see it.
Slow and steady wins the race. The "faster faster" mentality is what's wrong with the world today. Driving in a bus at a sane speed lets you enjoy the world as you pass through it. I guess people don't do that much any more.
You're right, a lot of people don't take it easy. I love driving the bus at around 55/60 MPH on back country roads, Route 66, that sort of thing. Freeways are for transport trucks and Greyhound. The other bonus is that big, flat windshield for watching the world go by. :)
Amen, brother! I had a '70 Bus for a while and it was a delight on road trips. Currently I drive a '63 Beetle on a daily basis and I love every minute of it.
Man I had one of those; a nice 1980 red camper bus. My dad sold it but I remember that being a 7 year old kid, I just loved that bus. Sad when I saw it destroyed by the new owner. Nice bus...
well.. i think i know the difference. i watched some videos on how the VWs were made. They actually hand welded things together whereas now robots weld the car together. Things like dashboards, seats, interior parts etc are still put in by people today.
That truck will die someday and be crushed like the focus-group tested, computer-designed, robot-made worn out POS that it will end up being. Old air-cooled VW buses and campers will live on because they were not made by robots. They have souls and will appreciate in value!
I believe that when someone has to pass you, even if you are doing 5 or more miles over the speed limit, they have got to be paranoid. no time to smell the roses huh.
Funny thing is I didn't want the shot with the truck. I was coming over the hill and he came up behind me. I had nowhere to turn around and the camera was rolling so I was pretty much cursing when he passed. We did another run that was clean when my buddy suggested I do this with the two takes and it turned out to be pretty funny...and yes..very true. I traveled around 11,000 miles through the U.S. in the bus and this happened a lot.

Best thing about my bus is the contact-high she gives to passengers and vehicles near her.
People can't help than to laugh themselve ssilly. I love speed, but with my VW, it's all about the experience.

weren't these busses made on assembly lines like most vehicles? Although I admit that the bus has more personality, i like chevy trucks.

I believe that when the VW was made the assembly line still had a bunch of people on it, where as it's completely robotic now for many car companies.
