I used to take my open differential(1wd)2wd ranger off road all the time. Once i put a locker in it never got stuck unless it was to low for the trail. I have a 4x4 now with a locked front and rear and it never gets stuck. I pull everyone else out.

@Fx4Ranger2002 GVW is what the truck can handle maxed out, not what it weighs standard. 4.0 XLT models are able to load 1,200lbs subtract that from the gross weight and your truck actually weighs about 3,900lbs empty.
You would have to drive a heavy vehicle to really notice how light our Rangers are. Ive had some 4,500lb Lincolns and my Rangers dont feel anywhere as heavy as those old Lincolns.

@KuntryRedNeckBoy That number you're all misinterpreting is how much the vehicle can weigh when loaded to maximum capacity. They weigh a little over 3000 lbs, depending on model.

I wheel alot in Alaska in the winter out on the lakes, should keep it in 4wd high, that way when you want to swing the rear end around you can spin your tires faster. Use low range to get your trail sorta started then back up put it back in high then gun it and let the fun times roll.
My 95 Dodge Caravan will get around better than that. We had 18 inches overnight here in Central PA, and it walked right out the driveway, about 200 yards long. I never got to plow it out until I got home from work that night.

My dad gave me my ranger truck and he pulled a huge stock trailer full of cows to the sell barn with it. These trucks are exellent . My dad said he drove the truck and rolled the 100,000 odometer over 3 times and I said its on 98000 again and he said yea it's getting ready to turn over a fourth time son. I put another 60,000 on it I had to buy a new speed odometer. This ones cool it has a tachometer. These trucks are bullet proof.

If I lived in a more rural area then yea but I live in L.A and last I checked there is no need per se for 4x4 although in retrospect I would've gotten one. Both are lifted only mine has 4wheel drive, but even in 2 its still twice what the ranger is. I concur. The ranger really isn't a bad truck. They last forever, decent ride quality, and can be VERY fun to drive. No, its not fast, and no, it doesnt have the highest towing capacity ever, but for what it is, its a quite nice little truck. I had a 1996 single cab xlt, was the best LITTLE truck I could have asked for.
exactly, idk what that other guy was complaining about...as far as midsize (i think ranger is mid size...but maybe it falls under compact pickup) the ranger does everything its expected to in its class. and comfortable? maybe its just the trim line i have on mine, but i could fall asleep driving my truck its so quite and seats are very comfortable. its also very reliable too, no having anything replaced for the 1st 78,000 miles besides the oil, and airfilter and brakes.

if you just had it in D it wasn't in 4 low. Fords need to be in first or second for the transfercase to work in 4 low unless it has a manual stick.

first off Rangers are not light....they are approximately 5080.. look in the door..next they are super bad ass trucks... i had a 99 on 35's goes very well.... cheap trick to them lift the torsion bars and you can fit 32's go with some mud dawgs very awesome....

@KuntryRedNeckBoy That number you're all misinterpreting is how much the vehicle can weigh when loaded to maximum capacity. They weigh a little over 3000 lbs, depending on model.

I wheel alot in Alaska in the winter out on the lakes, should keep it in 4wd high, that way when you want to swing the rear end around you can spin your tires faster. Use low range to get your trail sorta started then back up put it back in high then gun it and let the fun times roll.

My 95 Dodge Caravan will get around better than that. We had 18 inches overnight here in Central PA, and it walked right out the driveway, about 200 yards long. I never got to plow it out until I got home from work that night.

My dad gave me my ranger truck and he pulled a huge stock trailer full of cows to the sell barn with it. These trucks are exellent . My dad said he drove the truck and rolled the 100,000 odometer over 3 times and I said its on 98000 again and he said yea it's getting ready to turn over a fourth time son. I put another 60,000 on it I had to buy a new speed odometer. This ones cool it has a tachometer. These trucks are bullet proof.

@hefnerstar33 - Because not everyone buys a truck with the intention of 4x4ing it.. I would say majority of the trucks in the city are 2wd. If I lived in a more rural area then yea but I live in L.A and last I checked there is no need per se for 4x4 although in retrospect I would've gotten one. Besides I didn't pay for the truck it was a graduation gift so I won't complain.

@stl4kt maybe not yours, but i live in iowa and i can get through pretty much everything and trust me this winter put it to the test there's ice and snow that ranges 2-4ft deep and got through most of it in 2wd just ask my buddy with shitty s10 pulled him out in 2wd no weight in the back

@deadguywalkin I live in New Hampshire...Trust me weve got quite a bit of snow. Im comparing my xploder to my buddies 2wd ranger, its not even a comparison. Both are lifted only mine has 4wheel drive, but even in 2 its still twice what the ranger is. I still love rangers im just saying 4wd is the way to go if your gonna get one....Check out my truck on my page. My buddies ranger has about the same lift.

If you have decent tires and some weight in the bed you can get through a lot actually. My Ranger would go through about 8-9 inches of snow before it got stuck

All I've owned was a 1972 Ranchero and a 2001 Ranger and I loved both vehicles.. I also Owned a VW Bus project car. I dislike biased people against brands because now days I feel any NEW truck you buy is going to last long ASSUMING you take care of it and maintain it properly.

I'd be biased to ford cuz thats all I've owned but I'm not knocking Toyo cuz the tacoma prerunner is a sick ass fucking truck and (some) import brand trucks have proven their worth. I have a 03 ranger, its rides very smooth and is very comfortable as far as hauling shit, i dont understand your complaint. the ranger is everything a mid-size pickup is? if you make it any bigger then its considered a full size. its like the difference bettween a mid-size say ford taurus and a compact honda civic. you would be one of the other depending on what you need it for.

I concur. The ranger really isn't a bad truck. They last forever, decent ride quality, and can be VERY fun to drive. No, its not fast, and no, it doesnt have the highest towing capacity ever, but for what it is, its a quite nice little truck. I had a 1996 single cab xlt, was the best LITTLE truck I could have asked for.

exactly, idk what that other guy was complaining about...as far as midsize (i think ranger is mid size...but maybe it falls under compact pickup) the ranger does everything its expected to in its class. and comfortable? maybe its just the trim line i have on mine, but i could fall asleep driving my truck its so quite and seats are very comfortable. its also very reliable too, no having anything replaced for the 1st 78,000 miles besides the oil, and airfilter and brakes.
