Herb is incredible! I'm a drummer, have MS, in a wheelchair, and his music inspired me to take up trumpet just a couple of weeks ago! I have a beautiful trumpet-to me anyway-an Oxford in mint condition! Just 6 days in--have the 5-note scale down and played some of this song already! Had MS related depression-my trumpet and Herb eliminated it 100%! Thank you, Herb---for all you did for me with your music! Trumpets rule! Drums too! I want to meet you some day! I saw Herb's interview on the CBS Sunday Morning Show where he was choked up when asked about Karen Carpenter. It showed what an amazing human being he is as well as such a talented artist and humanitarian.

Case in point: "(They Long to Be) Close to You" had been around since the early '60s and Burt had done several versions... his own, Dionne's and so on. It wasn't until Richard Carpenter arranged it for the Carpenters' recording that the magic happened.

Most of the time Bacharach's arrangement's lost their nuance and tenderness when they were made into hit singles for others, Close To You is a good example of this. As lovely as the vocal harmonies are in the Carpenters are, musically it's far less rich.

We played "This Guy's in Love with You" as we entered the registry office for the wedding ceremony, with a roomful of family and friends. It was magical. Everytime I hear it, I get goosebumps.

Now I am 62 and still think of the love I felt
His music is wonderful and as a person he is also beautiful!
The realness and honesty of this song still brings tears to my eyes after all these years. I, like a lot of other guys(and gals) have lived this story. I love this song. This song was suppose to be sung by another guest on their show but canceled at the last minute due to illness so he subed in for her. After the show fans wanted this record but it wasn't available. He had to go into the studio and record it... went on to sell millions... :) Great song.
I'm told I don't foget too much. In 1971, The Carpenters had a summer TV show and each week would sing to a different letter of the alphabet. I wish they would put them on DVD. If you have input on this Richard- we miss you both.

this is one of the greatest songs of all time along with the girl from ipanema. it is a real shame it is never played on the radio so that the kids today can hear how a song should be written and sung.

Great Song. My mom and dad used to play this album all the time on our stereo. To hear this song now flashes me back at least 40 years ago. I have goose bumps right now as to how clearly I can see them both enjoying this song. It's truely an amazing song. So simple, but so fine. Thank you for posting.

Herb Albert is a treasure. His record lable was home to his own band but had another wonderful duo The Carpenters... This video has both and hearing this song is so fine... gives me goosebumps remembering... Thank you.

This song was suppose to be sung by another guest on their show but canceled at the last minute due to illness so he subed in for her. After the show fans wanted this record but it wasn't available. He had to go into the studio and record it... went on to sell millions... :) Great song.

I'm told I don't foget too much. In 1971, The Carpenters had a summer TV show and each week would sing to a different letter of the alphabet. I wish they would put them on DVD. If you have input on this Richard- we miss you both.

May 1968, heard this song in Vietnam. We were back from a very bad time in the jungle. Made us think of our loves back home. 43 years later - still the same effect. Thanks Herb. The most beautiful song ever made by a man about a woman he loves.

Back in my girlfriend days 1970's. Sadly I never married because of what happened in 1980's. But then wow, in my young teens, smotched with girlfriend Sally to this and and snogged, my friends were all courting in this days, when Herb was playing his music.

@emidore LOL. It does look like something from Sesame Street. I don't know how he managed to continue playing the trunpet, singing, and looking effortlessly seductive at the camera while sitting way up on that thing without a harness. The guy's a trooper.

@nakedBison69 Same ole same ole - still don't know why this person is so obsessed with Obama though - pretty weird. I mean, what does Obama have to do with Women being arrested at the Kotel for praying? To the un-initiated out there, this is the kind of mentality we have to deal with here in Israel. It is a shame what sometimes happens to religion - we see it in Islam with Taliban and in Judaism too. Hard to be sympathetic but one has to if only to pity those who hide in their darkness...

@ferchufasola "Fresa" les decimos aquí (a veces) a la gente melosa y cursi. Creo que tienes razón sobre el "que estarán diciendo estos dos", pero ni modo... la Música se quiera o no ya es interracial y gracias a eso podemos disfrutar en todos lados la música de todos. Saludos desde México!

@MrGhostwhowalks Yes that was Karen Carpenter and her brother Richard. Herb had signed them up to do several contracts. He also wrote some songs for them. Sad how things happen. Karen was the picture of health back then. I still don't know where she got the idea that she was fat. She really wasn't but I know her mom could be overwhelming. That may have played a role in it. Hope this answers your question.
