Northwest never merged with KLM. They had a very close code-sharing agreement, especially focused on trans-atlantic flights, but there was never a merger of the two companies. Air France and KLM did merge, as have Delta and Northwest now. Both the new AF/KLM and the new Delta are continuing their close code share agreement.
Interesting! I checked my logbook and I happened to be the first officer from this flight! I remember this approach because we were slammed in pretty high. The captain flew this leg and he did a great job. That was our flight attendant Alice! haha
It's perfectly legal above 10,000ft. Now obviously that doesn't apply to takeoff and landing. So it is technically illegal, but does not pose any safety hazard to the safe operation of the aircraft. So is it breaking the law? Yes. Should it be? No, probably not.
America West merged with US Airways a couple years ago. The US name stayed, with America West management running the show from Arizona. Northwest and Delta recently announced a merger that will keep the Delta name, but this wont happen for another year or so.

Is it illegal to take videos on a plane is the sky, or do you try to sneek a peek out the window? (Don't worry, I won't report you to the cops)
