Instead they have an electronic insert in the horn that plays Taps electronically while someone in the honor guard stands there and pretends to play. Sad, but true. There have been many times when the "ceremonial bugle" has malfunctioned too. Go to the Bugles Across America website to request a live bugler.

IL SILENZIO was written by an Italian musician called Nini Rosso in the 1960's! Taps was written and performed in the middle of the 19th century! (1850-1860's) This version is very touching and close to the original!

This is not "Taps", nor is it "Last Post" from which Taps was derived. It is an Italian tune called "Il Silencio" (The Silence). Similar to Taps, but quite different if you compare the two.

I played this on the tuba once in the 8th grade. it was kinda not really sounded good because the tuba is some octoves down but i made people cry in the stand. It warmed me up becasue i thought of all of soldiers and my grandfathers who died for us to be doing this today.
This is pretty moving. However, it isn't the American military version of TAPS, which is a separately composed tune believed to have been written during the U. S. Civil War by a U. S. Army officer. The tune in this video is Il Silencio, a similar sounding, but different tune. TAPS, especially when played by two buglers in echo fashion at an actual funeral, is extremely moving. I've never seen a dry eye among those in attendance at a military funeral where TAPS is properly performed.
I started playing trumpet in 6th grade and I don't think I ever played this beautifully! It isn't exactly our rendition of Taps as it is written but it is none the less beautiful!!! Oh, and I am 51 now and a year ago I was just about playing as well as I ever had and still couldn't do what she is doing in front of all of these people! She has very clear tone and isn't afraid to improvise either. And that last note is hard to hit by any trumpeter who hasn't been playing for several years!!
@MichaelGuerriero Trust me, keep up your practicing, do what your instructor says, be in every part of band you can be, strive for 1st chair and yes, you will be that good!!! Maybe not yet, but you are just starting out so don't compare yourself to someone who has been playing longer than you. I believe you can do it!!!! Never quit on your music, you will find that it is something you will appreciate for the rest of your life. I would like to start practicing again this year myself!
To all the confused people out there. I am a former military bugler and current Police Honor Guard Bugler. This is not TAPS. This is "Il Silencio" by Italian Nini Rossi. It sounds similar, but other than that, there is no connection. This young lady is playing this at a concert by Andre Rieu (The Flying Dutchman). I might add that This young lady is an amazing trumpeter.

no dough a talented young lady and a beautiful piece but I am a stickler for tradition and while this is very beautiful it is not taps . that being said I was still none the lest moved by her playing.

Clearly the composition echoes "Taps." It follows the same pattern and whole phrases are the same. So - why is this a big deal? People do that all the time. I suppose the technically correct title would be "Il Silencio (Variation on 'Taps')" or some such. So what? It's pretty.
And to tall the "I'm a trumpet player" experts out there who are so sure she's not playing ... I'm a trumpet player too. The mouthpiece/breathing timing is spot-on. I say she's playing it.

yes, just appreciate a lovely talented girl and forget being petty. Esp the "military guy" and the one who said she is faking. what negative people. IT is a great piece to listen to and she does a great job. I couldn't ever do it but I can appreciate it. why can't we all??

Can you all just enjoy the damn song? Who cares if it is TAPS or not. Im in the Navy and I would still have this song performed at my burial whether or not it is TAPS. Congrats to her on being talented, and all the rest of you shut the hell up and enjoy it.

@lxolxo7 No problem. I just wish people would enjoy the music and not fight over what the song actually is. She has a lot more courage than most to go up there and do something like that. I know I can't play the trumpet like she can haha. But I give her the best of wishes and luck on her career if she chooses to play as a career. :)

IL SILENZIO was written by an Italian musician called Nini Rosso in the 1960's! Taps was written and performed in the middle of the 19th century! (1850-1860's) This version is very touching and close to the original!

@jsshely I'm military and when I was younger I was in the band. This is not impressive by any means. It's typical that people are capable of this level of ability at that age if they are any good at their particular instrument. No offense to her or your opinion.

It is remarkable that whoever composed Il Silencio used such similar musical phraseology to the original 'taps'.
However, this is an incredibly beautiful performance of an incredibly beautiful piece of music. I can listen to it over and over, and each time marvel at it's beauty.

While it is a beautiful song, it's not Taps at all. It's "Silenzio" originally written and performed by Nini Rosso.

@CRQ5508 People's short attention span is what has them think of Taps. They can't be trully blamed. After all 'Il Silenzio' was written as an extension of call for taps.
Either way... those notes make my heart ache every time I hear them.

@wosssname good. cuz i was about to say if this is taps this is, i think, a pretty big slap in the face for the fallen vets… Taps isn't a song u "pretty up". u dont do echo Taps, or this. its a bugle call that is meant to be played at a somber time. when a veteran of the United States Military has fallen. not for some concert by a 14 year old girl. my teacher would be in such an uproar…he is a respected military vet.

Whether it's the long original version of TAPS or not, it's one of the most beautiful pieces of music I have ever heard. Yes, our military has it's short version, which is also heart wrenching and indicative of the loses our military must bear.. Sit back, relax and enjoy this one..

@Lone Louie. How does one get away with posting a copyrighted musical performance, AND giving it the wrong name. "Il Silencio" is NOT taps and never was.
Taps takes about 1 minute to play. This took nearly 5 minutes. She plays it well, and is to be admired. You, on the other hand, ....

This is not "Taps", nor is it "Last Post" from which Taps was derived. It is an Italian tune called "Il Silencio" (The Silence). Similar to Taps, but quite different if you compare the two.

As I read all of theese comments, i had to ask myself wgy someone would show so much hatred toward a girl, honoring soldiers her way best seen fit, I have a ministry and I do not think any self respecting service man, soldier, vetern,or any other military man in my ministry would show as much hatred as some of the men on here claiming to be soldiers have, God Bless ya'll!

I played this on the tuba once in the 8th grade. it was kinda not really sounded good because the tuba is some octoves down but i made people cry in the stand. It warmed me up becasue i thought of all of soldiers and my grandfathers who died for us to be doing this today.

This is not the real Taps. It is a rendition that is called Il Silenzio. This song is played so well though. Truly amazing.

This is pretty moving. However, it isn't the American military version of TAPS, which is a separately composed tune believed to have been written during the U. S. Civil War by a U. S. Army officer. The tune in this video is Il Silencio, a similar sounding, but different tune. TAPS, especially when played by two buglers in echo fashion at an actual funeral, is extremely moving. I've never seen a dry eye among those in attendance at a military funeral where TAPS is properly performed.

I started playing trumpet in 6th grade and I don't think I ever played this beautifully! It isn't exactly our rendition of Taps as it is written but it is none the less beautiful!!! Oh, and I am 51 now and a year ago I was just about playing as well as I ever had and still couldn't do what she is doing in front of all of these people! She has very clear tone and isn't afraid to improvise either. And that last note is hard to hit by any trumpeter who hasn't been playing for several years!!

@MichaelGuerriero Trust me, keep up your practicing, do what your instructor says, be in every part of band you can be, strive for 1st chair and yes, you will be that good!!! Maybe not yet, but you are just starting out so don't compare yourself to someone who has been playing longer than you. I believe you can do it!!!! Never quit on your music, you will find that it is something you will appreciate for the rest of your life. I would like to start practicing again this year myself!

To all the confused people out there. I am a former military bugler and current Police Honor Guard Bugler. This is not TAPS. This is "Il Silencio" by Italian Nini Rossi. It sounds similar, but other than that, there is no connection. This young lady is playing this at a concert by Andre Rieu (The Flying Dutchman). I might add that This young lady is an amazing trumpeter.

The version being played here is not TAPS. It is a song called Il Silenzio or The Silence. She did a great job on it. At this speed it tears at the heartstrings. very nice

Hey genious critics if you would actually pay attention, she plays full version of taps that was originally called Last Post written in 1801 and only in 1862 it was shortened to the current version we hear on bases daily.
