@FutureMarine246 the twirling cause it looks good as in most hollywood films (Star Wars lightsaber scenes and in many sword fighting scenes) is really not vital, however it can teach you fluidity, snapping, throwing & combos. You can still learn those 4 skills in ways other than twirling, so if you can't get it, fortunately it's not that big of a deal, I advise to learn other aspects of the stick/baton and then when your over all skill level is higher you might pick up twirl!
I have found that repeated basic movements with a collapsable baton works well-personally the more complicated the movements the more you may get hurt-do you have some more vidios to watch? keep up the good work-whitewolf oldsgtmajusmc
@oldsgtmajusmc nothing like good ol basics and dedicated reps :) yes I should have plenty more vids floating around yt. thanks again for your comments!
i really like these vidios by this young man-teachs it well and the movements make sense-i teach use of a collapsable baton so i can use some of his movements-whitewolf
On the wrist "twirl" thru the single swing--Is the stick making a full circle? I find my wrist is getting alot of pressure and a callus on my forfingerinside knuckle--
thanks, my advice is that the movement needs to have a natural flow, so it shouldn't crank your own wrist. if you actually hit something while your wrist is cranked you can hurt yourself. so take it slow and exaggerate the move and try to find the natural motion. it takes time. so yeah go ahead and use your arm more for now. for grip, you can wear a glove, you have to learn how to hold the stick and how to relieve/transfer pressure, once again it takes time.
my best advice is to practice the basics tons more, simple swings, single circles. You have to do everything slow and controlled, buy doing this with the basics you are learning how to learn.
I've recently started kali myself, after doing mma for some time. The reason for it is mostly as I've been interested in it, and particularly for self-defense against a knife, so proficiency with a baton would be ideal for such situation (well, as ideal as the situation can be).
Just wanted to say keep up the good work, 'cause you're doing all of us a favor. And I'm not sure if I missed it in your stick forms video but I've seen one dual stick form where you make the infinity sign, know of it?
Ah, yeah. Well, I very much enjoy mma, and it's fun and a great workout, however, it assumes a lot of things about the opponent (which come in the form of rules), so it's not ideal for only self-defense, but it's great as a sport.
And, yeah, I'm well aware of that. I was just looking for an instruction on one specific type of dual-stick drill where you make the sign of infinity/8 with the sticks, but it's hard to explain when you don't really know what you're looking for yourself.
Master wmpyr...Great Videos. Infact it really got me into trainning with a baton. I started out practising with 8 and S. Yesterday I broka a wooden stick so today i will go to kungfu supplies to get some. If you ever need any eqiptments from Hongkong, I will be honoured to have them sent to you.
The frame 1:29 is really not a good idea(as what you've menstioned also)simply because the stick can easily get out of ur hand specially when it hit something(like if opponent just place his stick while you're twirling). That move are for Fiesta Marjorettes(hope I spell it right) only =).Grip full is the right one.Twirling also help you do multiple hit to the opponent.Check out the Hellboy II movie in the prince fight scene with the kings guard. He twirl his 2 sword with an open hand =).Not good
Cool technic, I just bought an asp and i'll begin to train with this exercice. Do you have more combo to show us ? If yes don,t hesitate to post them ;)
there is a video on the internet where security with a baton is trying to defend against a mob, and he swings at them and they get in on him and beat him up. With practice, the spins and twirls become fast strikes that make it hard for people to enter like a jab in boxing.
it was a while back, I don't remember, more specifically it was police vs soccer hooligans I think... and it was shot from a clear side view so it was easy to see what was going on.
Cool! This shows how far you've been with your sticks. You know well the fundamentals & ur great in explaining these. I just watched the Forbidden Kingdom of Jet Li & Jacky Chan. Like Jet Li said "Learn the Way and Find Your Own Way" and I think you have a great way c",)

unfortunately rare to see people train in other styles after mma, so good for you!
not sure what you mean, infinity, figure 8, basically are variations of circles, and there are a ton of that in Kali!

BMOUNIR may I ask what "ASP" (batton) stands for?
WMPYR which one you think is much better? Straight extensible batton or the sprint type? Thx
dgtalcue 3 years ago
not sure what the sprint type is, extensible baton is okay, not 100% impressed with it, the best stick I ever had was metal.
wmpyr 3 years ago
Sorry typo error...its a spring with the metal head at the end.
dgtalcue 3 years ago
like with the knives, I prefer manual :)
